I just tested the new DJI RC Pro 2 drone controller — and it's a beast for content creation on the fly

Tom's Guide18-05-2025
As our in-house drones expert, I look after our best drones buying guide and I test the latest drones by pushing them to the limit. That includes analyzing every single feature, scrutinizing image/video quality, build quality, and checking if battery claims are correct. But what good is a drone without a controller? There are a few types of drone controllers:
The last of these, the DJI RC Pro 2, is brand new, and it accompanied the launch of the DJI Mavic 4 Pro. It's the first drone I've ever given a 5-star rating too, and there are many reasons for it. 100MP Hasselblad stills, 6K/60fps video, next-gen obstacle avoidance, and the RC Pro 2.
The DJI RC Pro 2 is made for professionals, and it's the brand's most advanced consumer controller yet. Its 7-inch mini LED touchscreen is highly responsive and sports a peak brightness of 2,000 nits (and a 1,600 nits sustained brightness). There's an HDMI port for streaming, built-in mics, rotatable display for instant vertical shooting, and more.
The RC Pro 2 is the brand's most powerful consumer controller yet, and it doesn't come cheap. Currently not available in the U.S. (as DJI continues to assess its market strategy in line with the local conditions), it retails for £879 in the U.K. But for those who want to elevate their flying experience, it's well worth the premium — let me show you why.
Unlike the DJI RC-N3, the DJI RC-2 and so on, the DJI RC Pro 2 features a flip-up screen and pulling it up reveals the collapsible joysticks and buttons. This also wakes up the controller (and puts it to sleep when you push the screen down), so you don't need to press a specific button to power up anymore. It takes a step out of the prep process so you can get to flying almost instantly.
There's no sugarcoating it: the DJI Mavic 4 Pro is an expensive drone, retailing for £1,879 in the U.K. for the drone and the RC-2 controller. If you want the RC Pro 2, you can get the Creator Combo which also adds 512GB of internal storage to the drone, for £3,209. Good news is that the RC Pro 2 is compatible with other drones that support vertical shooting — like the Air 3S, Air 3 and Mini 4 Pro.
What's even better is that the RC Pro 2 syncs with the drone's gimbal, so rotating it vertically puts the drone into vertical shooting mode, negating the need to manually toggle the orientation. I think this is a very underrated feature. I constantly swapped between horizontal and vertical shooting, and the RC Pro 2's screen's rotation feels as smooth as butter.
The RC Pro 2 is also the brightest consumer controller. It has a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a sustained brightness of 1,600 nits (the maximum brightness that a display can maintain for an extended period of time without overheating). For context, the RC-2 has a max brightness of 700 nits. This is why I could view the screen even on an extremely sunny day.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
It also accurately displays 10-bit D-Log/D-Log M colors just as the drone records them — and what you'd see when editing the footage in Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. Overall, the RC Pro 2 makes for a fantastic viewing experience that's unlike any other.
There's a solid reason why the DJI RC Pro 2 is part of the DJI Mavic 4 Pro Creator Combo: it's a beast for videography and content creation. First of all, it features Dynamic Home Point Support. For example, if you're controlling your drone from a moving vehicle, the RC Pro 2 will constantly update the home point in real-time so when you need to land it, it'll land close to where your vehicle has stopped.
You also get an HDMI port which you can use to livestream what your drone is seeing (or your recorded footage) on to a larger screen, like one of the best TVs. There's 128GB of internal storage too as well as a slot for a microSD card.
And what I really like is that the RC Pro 2 has a built-in mic so you can record audio while flying. The controller's compatible with the DJI mic series, such as the DJI Mic 2 and DJI Mic Mini, but if you don't have access to these, at least you can record directly to the controller.
To top it all, for the first time, the RC Pro 2 has third-party app support which makes it work like a regular tablet. You can download video editing apps onto the controller and edit footage for quick sharing to social media. This also means that you don't have to wait until going back to your laptop to start the post-production process.
Since the controller uses a custom Android OS, you can install APKs via the built-in browser or a microSD card. I tested this out by downloading Adobe Lightroom Classic for photo editing and it worked like a charm. The screen shows 10-bit colors which means it can show 1.07 billion individual hues, and it's extremely responsive too, which makes editing a cinch. I even downloaded Qobuz so that I could listen to music while editing!
So, should you buy or skip the DJI RC Pro 2? It depends on a few things. If you're in the U.S., you're out of luck (for now) but I hope that changes soon. If you're in the U.K. and want a controller that makes content creation easier and flying more intuitive, then yes, it's worth the money.
The fact that you can use third-party apps to quickly edit content, listen to music while doing so, or even watch some YouTube videos in between editing sprees, makes the RC Pro 2 a force to be reckoned with. I'm already looking forward to using it more over the weekend.

Whether that's at home or out on the road, the most appropriate recharging method can be selected from: Grid Power: Fast and easy to plug in, recharge, and go, grid power supports fast recharging up to 2200 W. Taking only 55 minutes to go from zero to 80%[1], and 90 minutes to full[1], users are given the confidence to be able to set off whenever they need, even if charging begins just before heading out. Solar Power: Economical and environmentally friendly, DJI Power 2000 can be rapidly recharged with up to 1800W[1] of solar power using the DJI Power 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger, [1] taking only 75 minutes[1] to charge from zero to full. Car Power: Easily supercharge any road trip with the DJI Power 1kW Super Fast Car Charger[1] or the 1.8kW Solar/Car Super Fast Charger[1]. These chargers utilize the excess electricity from the car's alternator to quickly recharge the Power 2000, suitable for regular cars and RVs. It takes just 145 minutes[1] to charge the power station from zero to full. Intelligent Hybrid Recharging: Recharging with both AC and DC is economical, green, and highly efficient. While using grid power, the Power 2000 can be combined with a solar or car connection which increases the power station's output to 2200W. Recharging power can be increased further with the Power Expansion Battery 2000[1], giving an output of 3000W[1]. Intelligent charging prioritizes clean solar power, cutting grid electricity use and reducing bills. This is especially useful for RV camping and emergency power needs. The DJI Power 2000 also features an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) mode which ensures a continuous power supply and peace of mind, even in the event of a sudden power outage. If an electrical device is connected to a powered-on DJI Power 2000 via the AC output port and both are receiving power, the device defaults to UPS mode ensuring the connected device (or devices) will continue to receive power within 0.01 seconds[1]. Ultra-Quiet Operation and Advanced Safety In Standard Recharge Mode, DJI Power 2000 is quieter than most household refrigerators[1] producing a sound no higher than 30dB. When it comes to safety, this has been prioritized with careful consideration throughout the design from its body structure and cell chemistry to the system software. It also adopts advanced power management, maintaining power even when turned off for extended periods and ready for immediate use once powered on[1]. The lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) battery has a long life-span retaining 80% capacity after 4,000 cycles[1]. At a rate of one full charge cycle a day, this would equate to around ten years[1]. An intelligent battery management system (BMS) provides comprehensive protection. With 26 temperature sensors constantly monitoring heat dissipation, the device operates normally even at high temperatures up to 45°C (113°F) [1]. Additionally, 21 fuses provide circuit protection for each module. If the safety threshold for electricity usage is surpassed, the protective mechanism for power supply and recharging activates automatically. Furthermore, the BMS system features a new sub-nano coating for enhanced battery protection. A new potting process protects the inverter, ensuring safer operation in rain, condensation, and salt spray conditions[1], reducing concerns while camping by the sea or driving in high-altitude areas. [1] The Power 2000 is made of flame-retardant materials, reducing the chance of open flames after drops or impacts and has a static pressure-bearing capacity of up to 1 ton. DJI's new portable power station has double the power and even more outlets

DJI TL;DR DJI has launched the new Power 2000 portable power station with double the battery size of the previous version. The Power 2000 brings twice as many AC and USB output ports, along with two SDC ports for charging drone batteries. Among multiple charging options, the power station can be hooked up to two solar panels and even charged while in the car. Drone-maker DJI also offers one of the most compelling portable power solutions under its Power series, which is great for off-grid backup. Today, it is launching a new version with double the power capacity and more output options. The DJI Power 2000 is the company's latest portable power station, and it has twice the power capacity of its predecessor. That means there is a 2,048Wh battery pack inside that delivers a stable 3,000W output until it completely dies out. Tushar Mehta / Android Authority DJI has also bumped up the number of power outlets, as the Power 2000 now offers four AC ports instead of two on the earlier model. These are paired with four USB Type-A and four USB-C ports, up from two each previously. Two USB-C ports support power output of up to 140W, while the other two are limited to 65W. But all of them can run concurrently, tanking up four devices at high speeds. The DJI Power 2000 also comes with two proprietary SDC (Smart direct current) ports for fast-charging batteries for drones such as the Air 3, Inspire 3, Mavic 3, and the entire Matrice series. Unlike the Power 1000, which came with one standard SDC port and one SDC Lite port, where the regular version gets higher priority in power delivery, both ports on the Power 2000 are standard SDC and support bidirectional charging. The bigger battery also takes longer to recharge, though it still boasts impressive figures. DJI says the Power 2000 can be recharged using a standard AC wall outlet in just 90 minutes, up from a claimed 70 minutes on the Power 1000. The new power station also supports charging with a DC outlet in a car in about two hours, and even using dual solar panel inputs along with support for solar panels that can be placed on the car's rooftop and also used while driving. In case the power goes out while it is connected to a power outlet, the power station can reverse the direction of the supply, serving as a UPS powering the entire house. DJI DJI says the Power 2000 has undergone similar charging tests and the battery cells inside it are expected to still hold 80% of the charge after roughly 4,000 recharge cycles. If this alone can't meet your energy needs, you can pair the Power 2000 with up to ten more DJI Expansion Batteries, each rated for 2,048Wh, increasing the total backup to more than 22,000Wh. The other trade-offs with a bigger battery include a much higher weight of almost 50lbs, compared to the Power 1000's 32lbs mass, even though its physical dimensions remain largely unchanged. The new model is also heavier on the pocket, and will be available in the US at $1,299, which, however, is still cheaper than buying two Power 1000s. Got a tip? Talk to us!
