Oklahoma Sooners among top 12 for elite 2026 defensive end

Yahoo20-03-2025
The Oklahoma Sooners continue to be in a good position for one of the best defensive ends in the 2026 recruiting class, four-star prospect Kevin Ford, Jr. The Sooners were included in Ford's top 12 released on Thursday.
Along with the Sooners, Ford named Texas A&M, Florida, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Penn State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Missouri, and USC. He's a bonafide blue-chipper with the opportunity to be a legit difference-maker at the collegiate level. He comes with great size for the position
Here's what I had to say about Ford after Sam Spiegelman of Rivals issued a Futurecast favoring the Sooners after OU's Junior Day at the end of January.
Out of Duncanville High School, Ford is a disruptive defensive end prospect. He's got a quick get-off at the snap that he uses to knife through the line of scrimmage or get around offensive tackles. Ford shows good play strength, displaying the ability to knock back offensive linemen with his initial strike. He sets the edge well in the run game and shows good discipline in his responsibilities. His speed and athleticism make him a natural pass rusher, but he has the strength to be a force against the run. Ford has a strong motor and is willing to chase down plays from the backside or after the quarterback steps up to avoid his initial rush. - Williams, Sooners Wire
Oklahoma defensive end coach Miguel Chavis has done an excellent job on the recruiting trail, landing blue-chip edge rushers in each recruiting cycle since joining the Sooners in 2022. Chavis and the Sooners will have their hands full on the recruiting trail as they work to fend off a who's who in collegiate recruiting. But the Sooners are in a great spot to land the dynamic defensive end out of Texas.

Pair of Sooners specialists named to annual award watch lists

The Oklahoma Sooners spent time in the transfer portal this offseason working to remake their special teams units after Zach Schmit and Luke Elzinga ran out of eligibility after last season. The Sooners brought in Tate Sandell from UTEP and Jacob Ulrich from Kennesaw State to take over as the place kicker and punter. Sandell was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list, given to the nation's best kicker, on Friday. Ulrich was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, which goes to the best punter in college football. Sandell arrived in the spring portal after a strong season with the Miners, converting 19 of 23 field goals, including 17 of 18 within 49 yards, and was perfect within 40 yards. Ulrich averaged 45.6 yards per punt and was fifth in the nation in punts downed inside the 20. The Oklahoma Sooners expect to be one of the better teams in the nation in 2025, and if they are, they'll need Sandell and Ulrich to come through when called upon. 'Game On:' Ford CEO Responds to the Corvette's Nürburgring Record

The Ford Mustang GTD only held the record for the fastest American car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife for a little over 7 months. Ford announced a 6:57.685 lap back in December , and bettered it with a 6:52.07 a few months later , but Chevrolet just took the crown with the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X. Ford's response? "Game on." That came directly from CEO Jim Farley, who replied "[c]ongrats to the Corvette team. Game on!" on an Instagram post from the official Corvette page. The Drive was the first to bring our attention to Farley's comment. Ford could go back to the 'Ring with the Mustang GTD, but that car is at somewhat of a disadvantage to the ZR1 and ZR1X. The Mustang GTD weighs over 4,300 pounds based on EPA documents that Road & Track reported on back in February, while Car and Driver measured the ZR1 at 3,831 pounds. Chevy hasn't revealed a weight figure for the ZR1X, but it's reasonable to expect it to eclipse the 4,000-pound mark. The Mustang GTD has 815 horsepower, which is a lot, but the ZR1 makes 1,064 hp, and the ZR1X ups it to 1,250 hp. Power and weight figures aren't everything, but they do count for a ton. Still, the GTD has a very advanced suspension system, huge Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, and an extremely advanced aero package that includes a Formula 1-style drag-reduction system to stall the wing on straights. In any case, we don't know if Ford has anything planned. Farley surely wants to take back the record—he's a racer himself and he's pushing performance hard with the Mustang—but Ford isn't going to go to the 'Ring unless it knows it at least has a chance of beating the Corvette's time. There could be more time in the GTD, but Ford may also need to wait until it has its next, greatest thing to beat Chevy.
