Chicago Gourmet announces 2025 dates, new sports theme with a crosstown twist and all-star roster of chefs
This year's theme, 'Step up to the Plate,' is a marriage of food and sports, showcasing 'all-star chefs, big-time bites and championship-level sips,' said Sam Toia, president and CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association.
'Like pro sports, great food requires skill, strategy and passion,' Toia said. 'No doubt Chicago is a top sports town, but our restaurant teams are the real MVPs of the city.'
Like in previous years, host chefs will collaborate with local businesses, restaurants and drink vendors over four days. Organizers said they will soon announce additional pre-game events.
In the 18th iteration of the event since it began in 2008, the festival typically generates buzz around Hamburger Hop, a fan-favorite burger competition in which chefs compete to win the celebrity-judged award and the audience-judged People's Choice.
This year's 'cross-town classic' Hamburger Hop will be co-hosted by Joe Flamm, chef and owner of il Carciofo and Rose Mary, who will represent the South Side, and Sarah Grueneberg, chef and co-owner of Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio, representing the North Side.
'This event has always been a Chicago Gourmet highlight and I'll be decked out in my beloved Cubbies jersey,' Grueneberg said.
Flamm said he's excited about the added element of a crosstown rivalry to an already thrilling event.
'I love that Hamburger Hop is a chance for chefs from all around the city to show off their grilling skills while getting creative and having fun,' Flamm said. 'I've been a part of Chicago Gourmet for as long as I can remember, so being back to host an event like this again is a full-circle moment for me.'
Hamburger Hop, hosted on the Harris Theater rooftop, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26.
Over 100 chefs and restaurateurs are slated to participate, including Rick Bayless (Frontera Grill, Topolobampo), Marcos Carbajal (Carnitas Uruapan), Diana Dávila (Mi Tocaya Antojería), Jenner Tomaska (The Alston, Esmé), Norman Fenton (Cariňo), Israel Idonije (Signature, The Staley) and Jeff Mauro (Mauro Provisions).
Other host chefs and ticket prices will be announced later, but many of the main events from previous years are scheduled to return.
The crowd favorite Tacos & Tequilas will be hosted by Bayless and Carbajal on Sept. 25.
Rise and Shine Gourmet, hosted by Art Smith, Lorena Garcia and Jernard Wells, will serve up sweet and savory brunch bites from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28.
Late Night Gourmet Asian Street Market — a new after-party addition hosted by chef Thai Dang of HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen — will be from 9 p.m. to midnight Sept. 26.
Grand Cru on Sept. 27 takes inspiration from 'the greatest of all times,' such as Michael Jordan and Jordan Biles, and will be hosted by Stephanie Izard, executive chef and partner of four Chicago restaurants: Girl & the Goat, Little Goat, Duck Duck Goat and Cabra.
'I always say Chicago is the culinary capital of the world and Chicago Gourmet just highlights that each year,' Toia said. 'It's where talent, creativity and our city's enduring competitive spirit gets to shine.'
Programming at Chicago Gourmet will benefit the Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, which works with high school students to build the hospitality workforce through career exploration.
Ticket prices have not yet been announced but will be available starting in July at chicagogourmet.org.

Chicago Gourmet, the annual food festival in Millennium Park that showcases local chefs and restaurants, returns this fall with a jam-packed lineup of events. The culinary celebration runs from Thursday, September 25, to Sunday, September 28, at the Harris Theater Rooftop, and tickets are on sale now. Another returning favorite is Tacos & Tequila on Thursday, September 25. Hosted by Rick Bayless, the event highlights tacos from local chefs like Diana Dávila (Mi Tocaya Antojería) and Carlos Gaytán (Tzuco), agave spirits and cocktails, and traditional music and dancing. The popular Hamburger Hop, a competition between 14 chefs to see who can make the best burger, happens the night of Friday, September 26. Some of the names battling it out will be Joe Fontelera (Boonie's), former Chicago Bears player Israel Idonije and Stephen Gillanders (the Staley), and Jose Sosa (the Greggory). After the Hop, the festivities will continue at the Asian Late Night Market at Tao Chicago. This new event, hosted by Haisous chef Thai Dang, offers Asian bites and specialty cocktails from Henry Cai (3LP), Bo Fowler (BiXi Beer), and more. Those who love to brunch can check out Rise & Shine Gourmet on Sunday, September 28. The daytime bash brings together a collection of talents who will serve sweet and savory plates to go along with cocktails and live music. Participating chefs include Dominique Leach (Lexington Betty Smokehouse), Devon Quinn (Eden), Paul Fehribach (Big Jones), and Aaron Cuschieri (the Dearborn). Also new this year is a series of Culinary World Series events throughout the city leading up to Chicago Gourmet. Centered on the 'Step Up to the Plate' theme, these activations feature bites delivered with a side of sports. Cubs and White Sox fans can root for their team at Game Day Gourmet on Friday, July 25. Held in a private suite at Rate Field, the evening will offer the opportunity to watch the Crosstown Classic in style while enjoying ballpark fare, cocktails, wine, beer, and the 'Duck Inn Dog Showdown,' which challenges chefs to put their spins on the classic hot dog. And Just Like That … New York City Has Great Tacos
There's something I meant to tell you last week, but I chickened out: I'm a Californian by birth! I moved to the city after college, and though it's been several years, I've fallen for every Erewhon-coming-to-N.Y.C. prank, and still think of my hometown team when I turn down Doyers Street. But being a Californian occasionally comes in handy. For one thing, my taco radar is spot on. That's been especially useful this past year, when a host of taquerias seemed to suddenly appear, spawning ridiculously good Mexican restaurants all over the city. Finding respectable carnitas and barbacoa used to be a chore — now my friends debate which Brooklyn chefs make them best. It's enough to make a Californian cry tears of joy. Cramped New York kitchens give rise to all sorts of genius, spatially-aware cooking styles, like searing tortillas on an upside-down wok or baking bagels in a wood-fired pizza oven. At Wayne & Sons in the East Village, which is smaller than most studio apartments, the chef Oscar Hernandez warms his tortillas using a garden variety bagel toaster. Sit at the bar, which is also the kitchen — and watch them tumble over the conveyor belt. The house specialty is the hard shell beef taco. (The recipe, from Hernandez's family, has as much in common with Taco Bell as Una Pizza Napoletana does with Papa Johns.) His deeply seasoned picadillo needs little more than a zigzag of 'smoky sauce' — mayonnaise and chipotle adobo — but I can never resist the bear-shaped salsa bottles sitting on every table. For a night of Texas-size proportions, pair one with an order of queso-drenched armadillo cheese fries and an extra-strong margarita.
