Russian forces claim first foothold in new Ukraine region
Moscow launched a fresh large-scale drone and missile barrage before the announcement, including on Ukraine's army recruitment centres, as part of an escalating series of attacks that come as ceasefire talks led by the United States stall.
The Russian defence ministry said its forces captured the village of Dachne in the Dnipropetrovsk region, an important industrial mining territory that has also come under mounting Russian air attacks.
Russian forces appear to have made crossing the border a key strategic objective over recent months, and deeper advances into the region could pose logistics and economic problems for Kyiv.
Kyiv has so far denied any Russian foothold in Dnipropetrovsk.
Moscow first said last month its forces had crossed the border, more than three years since launching its invasion and pushing through the neighbouring Donetsk region.
Earlier Monday, Ukraine's army said its forces 'repelled' attacks in Dnipropetrovsk, including 'in the vicinity' of Dachne.
Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five Ukrainian regions — Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea — that Moscow has publicly claimed as Russian territory. Russia used its main city of Dnipro as a testing ground for its 'experimental' Oreshnik missile in late 2024, claiming to have struck an aeronautics production facility.
An AFP reporter in the eastern city of Kharkiv saw civilians with their belongings being evacuated from a residential building damaged during Russia's overnight attacks, and others sheltering with pets in a basement.
At least four people were killed and dozens wounded across Ukraine, mostly in the Kharkiv region bordering Russia and in a late-morning attack on the industrial city of Zaphorizhzhia.

BEIRUT: Lebanon said three people were killed Tuesday in a strike near Tripoli that the Israeli military said targeted a Hamas, the first on the north since a November ceasefire with Hezbollah. In May, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas visited Beirut for talks on disarming in refugee camps across Lebanon as the Beirut government seeks to impose its authority across all its territory. Five Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza combat
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Five Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in the Gaza Strip, the military said Tuesday, in one of the deadliest days for Israeli forces in the Palestinian territory this year. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lamented a 'difficult morning' as he visited Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump, who is pressing for a ceasefire in the more than 21-month war. 'All of Israel bows its head and mourns the fall of our heroic soldiers, who risked their lives in the battle to defeat Hamas and free all our hostages,' Netanyahu posted on X. The five soldiers aged between 20 and 28 'fell during combat in the northern Gaza Strip', the Israeli military said. Two others were severely wounded and 'evacuated to a hospital to receive medical treatment', it said, adding their families had been notified. Israeli military correspondents reported the deaths occurred when improvised explosive devices detonated in the area of Beit Hanun in the north of the territory. During attempts to evacuate the wounded, soldiers reportedly came under fire. Trump says US will send more weapons to Ukraine
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Monday the United States would send more weapons to Ukraine, primarily defensive ones, to help the war-torn country defend itself against intensifying Russian advances. Washington's decision to halt some weapons shipments to Kyiv prompted it to warn the move would crimp its ability to fend off Russia's air strikes and battlefield advances, while drawing criticism from Democrats and some of Trump's fellow Republicans. 'We're going to send some more weapons. We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves,' Trump told reporters at the White House at the start of a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. 'They're getting hit very hard now,' he added. Trump says 'probably 12' tariff letters being sent out Monday 'We're going to have to send more weapons, defensive weapons, primarily.' In a statement the US Defense Department later said it would send additional defensive weapons to Ukraine at Trump's direction, to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while efforts continue to secure a lasting peace. The Pentagon said its initiative to evaluate military shipments around the world stayed in effect. On Friday, Trump had told reporters Ukraine would need Patriot missiles to defend itself, but he did not mention them again specifically on Monday. The Pentagon statement gave no details on the weapons to be shipped to Ukraine. After a telephone call with Trump on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had agreed to work on increasing Kyiv's capability to 'defend the sky' as Russian attacks escalated. The leaders had discussed joint defense production, purchases and investments, he added. Ukraine has been asking Washington to sell it more Patriot missiles and systems that it sees as key to defending its cities from intensifying Russian air strikes. Germany said it was in talks on buying Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine to bridge the gap.
