Realigned highway to Bengaluru via Shiradi Ghat will be ready in five years, says NHAI official

The tunnel and the realigned road to Bengaluru from Mangaluru through Shiradi Ghat will be ready in about five years, said Abdullah Javed Azmi, NHAI project director, here on Thursday. Answering a question by former Minister B. Nagaraj Shetty during the discussion on 'Unlocking mobility: Enhaning Road, Rail and Air connectivity to Mangaluru', Mr. Azmi said the new alignment is being worked out jointly by NHAI and Railways. 'It will take about a year to get approval for the new alignment. It will take about three years to complete the work. The road, as per the new alignment, will not be ready for five years,' Mr. Azmi said. Till the completion of the work on the new alignment, the existing National Highway 75 should continue to be used, he said. This discussion was part of the CII Mangaluru's Infrastructure and Logistics Summit. Mr. Azmi said widening of NH 75 between B.C. Road and Gudya to four-lane was nearing completion. Widening of Mysuru-Mani NH 275 between Mysuru and Madikeri has been taken up. Mr. Azmi said it is necessary to look at the widening of the highway through Sampaje Ghat also in order to have another road to connecting the hinterland and Mangaluru. The NHAI officer said due to some technical reasons the work related to Kuloor bridge in Mangaluru got delayed. 'We hope to complete the work by January 2026,' he said. Elevated road In order to decongest movement of transport vehicles to the New Mangaluru Port, Mr. Azmi said the NHAI has planned to construct a 1.3 km elevated highway on NH 66. He added that a presentation on the elevated highway will be made shortly to New Mangalore Port Authority, which is keen to fund the work. For faster connectivity to NMP, NHAI has proposed to have an all-weather road along Phalguni (Gurupura) River to connect B.C. Road. The NHAI will shortly approach an agency for preparing DPR for this work. In the earlier discussion, NMP's senior deputy traffic manager, Pramod Kumar Dash, said a lot of emphasis needs to be put on improving the road and rail connectivity from the hinterlands to the port. Improved connectivity will boost the operations of the port, which, in turn will improve economy of the region. Srikanth Tata, the head of operations of Mangaluru International Airport, said talks with the State government officials regarding additional land necessary for expanding Mangaluru airport operations were at an advanced stage and he was hopeful of a positive outcome. Mr. Tata said the airport presently has direct flights to five domestic and eight international destinations, which are operated by Air India and Indigo. 'We have sought for point of call status. If it's granted, then bigger aircrafts will land at the airport for which we need additional land for runway expansion,' he said. Mr. Tata said they were in talks with airline operators for flights to Thiruvananathapuram, Kolkata, Guwahati, Ahmedabad and Jaipur.

Naidu heads for Singapore tomorrow to regain trust, investments

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu will embark on a six-day visit to Singapore from July 26, aimed at attracting investments to Andhra Pradesh. Dwelling on the matter at the Cabinet meeting here on Thursday, the Chief Minister said the previous YSRCP government had created troubles to the Singapore government and the firms, and lost their trust. His priority now is to restore the confidence of the Singapore firms and attract massive investments into the State. During the visit — his second foreign tour since forming the government (the first being Davos) — the Chief Minister will engage with the representatives of leading global companies, business owners, prominent industrialists, and notable personalities. The Singapore visit will serve as a key platform to promote Brand A.P. and showcase the State's new industrial and ease-of-doing-business policies, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office. Mr. Naidu will highlight Andhra Pradesh's robust infrastructure, including ports, airports, highways, harbours, and abundant water and land resources, as well as its 1,053 km coastline and skilled human capital, urging global investors to explore opportunities in the State. Key sectors On the first day, he will participate in a Telugu diaspora meeting, where Telugu people from Singapore and neighbouring countries are expected to gather. Besides seeking investments, he will encourage their participation in the State's P4 (Public-Private-People Partnership) initiative for poverty eradication. Port-based projects, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and data centres will be in focus for investments. Mr. Naidu will meet with dignitaries in Singapore to invite industrialists from the region to the Visakhapatnam Investment Summit scheduled for November this year. The Chief Minister will also participate in business roundtable meetings centred on the digital economy and fintech, and will attend a dedicated business roadshow in Singapore.
