Chris Sale went 8 2/3 innings, just missing his first shutout since 2019. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson hit home runs, and the Atlanta Braves handed the New York Mets their season-high fifth straight loss, 5–0, on Wednesday night.
Sale (5–4) allowed five hits and one walk. He struck out seven and did not allow a runner past second base. He threw 116 pitches before giving way to Raisel Iglesias, who got a groundout to end the game. Sale has given up four runs in his last 41 2/3 innings for a 0.86 ERA in his last six starts.

Olson hit his 15th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Ozzie Albies was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. Albies was hit in the right knee with a pitch while swinging at a third strike and went down for a few moments in the sixth inning but stayed in the game.
Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil was 1 for 3 and extended his on-base streak to 20 games, the longest in the majors. Paul Blackburn (0–1) gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Key moment: The Braves pushed their lead to 2–0 in the first on a catcher's interference call. Mets catcher Luis Torrens blocked a pitch with a runner on third, and when he went to corral the loose ball, he used his mask in his right hand to sweep it into his glove. The ruling was catcher's interference and an error, allowing the run to score.
Key stat: Acuña's 419-foot homer to center in the first inning was the 36th leadoff home run of his career and second this season.

Paul Skenes dominant again, striking out 9 in 6 innings as pirates blank d-backs 6-0

Paul Skenes struck out nine and gave up three hits in six innings. Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes drove in two runs each, and the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second straight game 6-0 on Sunday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes (6-8) is the first pitcher to have an ERA below 2 through his first 45 starts. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year sits at 1.89 for his career and 1.83 this year, which leads the majors. Skenes is the only starter this season who hasn't allowed a first-inning run. He struck out two in the first, including Geraldo Perdomo, who hadn't fanned in a league-best 39 straight at-bats. Jake McCarthy had a one-out triple in the second, but Skenes struck out James McCann and retired Alek Thomas on a popup to short. Skenes also worked around a leadoff double by Tristin English in the third. Cruz walked leading off the Pirates second, and the majors stolen base leader with 34 was off and running when Tommy Pham singled to center field on a 1-2 pitch from Zac Gallen for a 1-0 lead. Gallen (7-12) allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Arizona scored one run in the three-game series, winning 1-0 in 11 innings Friday night. Key moment: Skenes hit Eugenio Suárez with a 3-2 pitch leading off the fourth, and McCarthy doubled him to third with one out. Skenes then struck out McCann on three pitches and Thomas on six. Key stat: Skenes has allowed one run or fewer in 14 of 22 starts this season after doing it 14 times as a rookie. Up next: The D-backs head to Detroit to begin a series against the Tigers on Monday, and the Pirates play at San Francisco.

Ryan mcmahon sparks comeback, yankees beat phillies 4-3 to end 3-game slide

Ryan McMahon sparked a comeback with a tying two-run double in a four-run second inning against Zack Wheeler, and the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Sunday to salvage the finale of a three-game series. Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto made a spectacular leaping grab and tag of Cody Bellinger at the plate for an inning-ending double play that denied the Yankees a run in the third. Austin Wells hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and Trent Grisham an RBI single against Wheeler (9-4), who tied his career high with three hit batters—including two in a row in the second. Rookie Otto Kemp had his first big league multi-homer game, and Nick Castellanos also went deep as the Phillies hit three solo shots off Carlos Rodón (11-8), who allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Acquired Friday from Colorado, McMahon had a pair of hits and made a sliding stop to his glove side at third to throw out Realmuto in the second. Jonathan Loáisiga, Luke Weaver, Tim Hill, and Devin Williams combined for one-hit shutout relief, with Williams striking out two in a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances. Yankees relievers entered with a big league-worst 7.11 ERA since June 28. New York stopped a three-game slide and ended a sloppy streak of five straight games with errors. Key moment: Phillies center fielder Johan Rojas threw out Bellinger trying to score on Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s 293-foot flyout in the third. Realmuto jumped and swiped down to tag Bellinger on the neck as the runner's feet slid wide of the plate, and Bellinger reached to touch it with his left hand. Key stat: New York won without a home run for the first time since June 22. Up next: Phillies: LHP Cristopher Sánchez (9-2, 2.40) starts Monday night at the Chicago White Sox, who send RHP Davis Martin (2-8, 3.89) to the mound. Yankees: RHP Cam Schlittler (1-0, 4.35) starts Monday night's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays and RHP Drew Rasmussen (7-5, 2.93).

Leylah Fernandez beats Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 to win the DC Open for her biggest title

Leylah Fernandez collected the biggest title of her career at the D.C. Open with her most lopsided victory of the tournament, defeating Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 in the final on Sunday. The left-handed Fernandez, a 22-year-old from Canada who is ranked 36th, earned her fourth singles trophy–all have come at hard-court tournaments–and first at a WTA 500 event. She came quite close to a Grand Slam championship as a teenager at the 2021 US Open, making it all the way to the final in New York before losing to Emma Raducanu. There almost was a rematch in Washington, but Kalinskaya eliminated Raducanu in the semifinals Saturday. Until Sunday, the 48th-ranked Kalinskaya had not dropped a set all week. However, she wasn't able to keep up with Fernandez, who saved the only two break points she faced while taking four of Kalinskaya's service games in a match that lasted 1 hour 10 minutes. One key: Fernandez claimed 10 of the 12 points in the match when Kalinskaya hit a second serve. This was the first title for Fernandez since October 2023 at the Hong Kong Open. She arrived in Washington with a losing record this season and hadn't won more than two matches at the same tournament since last November. With a mix of baseline excellence and strong net play, Fernandez eliminated top-seeded Jessica Pegula–the US Open runner-up last year–and No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina–the Wimbledon champion in 2022–on the way to the final. The win against Rybakina in Saturday's semifinals took three tiebreakers and more than three hours to decide. There was no such drama against Kalinskaya, a 26-year-old Russian who fell to 0-3 in tour-level finals. She lost to Jasmine Paolini in Dubai and to Pegula in Berlin last year. The men's final scheduled for later Sunday was No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur against No. 12 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated No. 1 Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Ben Shelton in the semifinals.
