Egypt launches fast-track lanes at Cairo Airport for African Union nationals
The initiative was unveiled in a ceremony at the airport to mark Africa Day, which commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963.
Representatives from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as several African ambassadors to Egypt, attended the event.
Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Ambassador Ihab Awad said the launch is part of the government's efforts to respond to the increasing flow of African visitors to Egypt, facilitate their entry, and improve their reception at the country's main international gateway.
"This is one of many steps currently being undertaken by state institutions to reinforce Egypt's African identity," Awad added.
He noted that the move reflects Cairo's commitment to deepening relations with African partners and strengthening people-to-people ties.
Ambassador Awad highlighted Egypt's growing outreach "through sectors such as medical and conference tourism, as well as expanding scholarships for African students in Egypt."
'These steps also contribute to supporting African cooperation in the face of common challenges,' he affirmed.
Africa Day, formerly known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day, is celebrated annually on 25 May to commemorate the founding of the OAU, which was succeeded by the African Union in 2002.
Despite institutional transition, the date continues to symbolize African unity and solidarity.

The Ministry emphasized that the obstructions, which initially affected the Algerian Embassy in Paris, have since extended to the country's consulates across France—despite prior assurances from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs that the matter would be resolved. In response, Algeria has implemented reciprocal measures by revoking the special access privileges previously granted to members of the French diplomatic mission in Algeria. These privileges had allowed French diplomats streamlined access to Algerian ports and airports. Algeria had earlier voiced surprise and concern over the French measures, which reportedly prevented embassy personnel from entering restricted zones in French airports—areas they require access to for handling diplomatic mail and secure consignments. The move adds to simmering tensions between the two countries, already strained by historical sensitivities and occasional diplomatic flare-ups. State steps up efforts to streamline trade, digitise processes: Investment minister
Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Hassan El-Khatib affirmed that Egypt is actively working to simplify trade procedures, facilitate business operations, and advance digitisation to enhance the investment climate. El-Khatib made his remarks during a business breakfast organised by the Egyptian-Japanese Business Council and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in coordination with Egypt's commercial office in Tokyo. The event forms part of broader efforts to deepen economic cooperation between Egypt and Japan. More than 12 senior executives from various industrial sectors and institutions attended the gathering, reflecting Japan's growing interest in Egypt as a gateway for investment into African markets. During his address, El-Khatib reviewed Egypt's economic indicators and outlined key industrial investment opportunities. He highlighted the significant infrastructure investments made over the past decade, which have strengthened trade flows and attracted further foreign investment. Opening remarks were delivered by Council Secretary-General Katsuya Igarashi and Japanese-side Chairperson Jun Karube. Discussions at the roundtable explored potential collaboration in infrastructure and renewable energy projects, including wind farms and logistics ports. Participants also discussed opportunities in machinery, energy, and food sectors, alongside plans to manufacture and supply equipment to the Egyptian market. Further topics included green hydrogen production, export-oriented industrial zones, chemicals, industrial and engineering sectors, smart transportation solutions, specialised manufacturing, and prospects for investment and financing in large-scale infrastructure projects.

ABE hosts South African trade union delegation to boost cooperation
Mohamed Abou El-Soud, CEO of the Agricultural Bank of Egypt (ABE), has welcomed a delegation from the South African Society of Bank Officials (SASBO), led by Tsitsi Maphatsoe, during their visit to Egypt. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and explore opportunities for joint cooperation. Also attending was Solaf Darwish, Deputy Chair of the House of Representatives' Manpower Committee and Chairperson of Egypt's Union for Bank, Insurance and Financial Sector Employees. The visit forms part of a joint cooperation programme between SASBO and the Egyptian General Union for Bank, Insurance and Financial Sector Employees, designed to promote the exchange of experience and deepen ties between the two unions. This visit marks the first of its kind in 14 years. Abou El-Soud affirmed the depth of historic ties between Egypt and South Africa across various sectors, in line with Egypt's broader policy of enhancing cooperation with African countries to support development across the continent. During the meeting, the CEO highlighted the banking and financial services offered by ABE, underlining the bank's developmental role in supporting the national economy and advancing sustainable agricultural development as part of the state's strategy to maximise returns from the agricultural sector. He stressed the vital role of trade union activity in the banking sector to foster a productive and supportive work environment that elevates professional performance. Abou El-Soud noted that ABE places significant emphasis on improving working conditions, as its experienced workforce is the cornerstone of the bank's ongoing development strategy. 'The bank has 20,000 success stories,' he remarked, referring to ABE's total number of employees. He explained that ABE is committed to providing support and incentives that ensure promising career progression for its staff, in line with the banking sector's evolving needs and the bank's strategic vision and objectives. He added that the bank maintains open channels of communication with its employee union representatives, who serve as a bridge between management and staff, ensuring compliance with labour laws and safeguarding workers' rights. In addition, ABE prioritises comprehensive employee care to foster a positive workplace culture and strengthen staff loyalty and engagement. Abou El-Soud also outlined that ABE is continuously implementing a comprehensive training strategy aimed at equipping its employees with the latest banking skills and knowledge to keep pace with global developments and best practices, thereby enhancing the bank's ability to deliver high-quality financial and banking services to its clients. Solaf Darwish reviewed recent developments in Egyptian labour legislation during the meeting, noting that the new labour law aligns with international standards and promotes a sustainable work environment. She highlighted that the bank's internal regulations demonstrate a commitment to social considerations, gender equality, and a balanced relationship between the general union and the bank. Darwish emphasised that Egyptian institutions, including ABE, are dedicated to aligning legislation with global trends to protect employee rights and improve internal work environments. Tsitsi Maphatsoe highlighted the significance of the visit, which offered the delegation valuable insights into ABE's approach and its efforts to strengthen relations between management and staff. He expressed keen interest in exploring future cooperation opportunities, especially in joint training initiatives and professional knowledge exchange across Africa. Maphatsoe also praised the clear harmony between the bank's leadership and its employees, and conveyed his gratitude to ABE's management for their warm hospitality.
