"My stomach was growling and tomorrow came" - Michael Beasley recalls being broke and sleeping in his car for two years originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Former NBA player Michael Beasley made an emotionally-charged revelation during a recent episode of the "3s and Ones" podcast with Chris Haynes.
In his monologue, Beasley talked about being broke because his family spent his money and his CPA stole the rest of it. Because of this, Beasley said that from 2021 to 2023, he slept in his car and did not even have $5.39 to buy his favorite Checkers & Rally's Famous Seasoned Fries. What made it even worse was that nobody was there to help him when he was at the lowest point of his life.
"I went from crying for help to trying myself. Like everybody that's on my line now and everybody want to like…I don't want, I don't like you. Like my stomach was growling and tomorrow came. I was hungry by myself, and tomorrow came. I don't like you. I don't have to like you. I like me. I like me that much. Because I was there for me. God, right? Every fu—ng day, every fu—ng dribble, every time, every DM and this is why I don't like y'all saying my name. Because when I was there, I was…all of you DMs, everybody. I see hurt. But tomorrow came. I couldn't let the sun beat me," Beasley said.
Beasley said he was afraid to admit he was afraid
It was in a longer video of the interview where Beasley admitted he went broke and he blamed it on the IRS, his "baby mamas" (take note, plural) and his accountant.
He also talked about how his family excessively spent his money while his CPA took the rest of his bank account. Mike admitted that as early as his third year in the NBA, he was blocking Kobe's shot but didn't have any money in his bank account.
Beasley also claimed that the people close to him did not bother to check on him during these trying times because they thought he was okay, as he always projected a confident image to the outside world. Deep inside, Mike said that he was just as scared as anybody could be in his situation, but he was too afraid to admit it to anybody.
He said he turned to basketball and was able to gut it out and survive the ordeal.
"I tell these kids in my gym, like 'Yo, you want to be Michael Beasley or Kevin Durant?" he added.
"You understand? And they get that. I tell my kids. I say, 'Yo, I'm known as one of the best basketball players ever. Do you want to be that? Without a job? Or do you want to be kicking ni—as in the balls, making 40 million a year, says Draymond,'" Beasley said.He did not get the support from the NBA
This isn't the first time that Beasley talked about fighting his demons alone. Three years ago, during an appearance on "The Pivot" podcast, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft talked about the lack of support he got from the NBA community when he was going through his darkest moments.
"I don't talk to nobody," Beasley said. "I've reached out and I've reached out so much that I have to die with some kind of dignity…I know it's not sustainable, but at the same time, who do I go out with?" I've been trying to find good people for so long, I'm tired, bro."
Mike is one of the most talented bucket-getters that ever played in the NBA and even the best players in the game admit that he was your favorite player's favorite player.
However, he also dealt with many personal demons that destroyed his NBA career.
Oftentimes, people blame him for the fate he suffered because of his immaturity and indiscretions. However, when you are fighting your battles alone, that's what really drags people to the bottom.
Luckily, Beasley had basketball to turn to. He might still not be well off today, but at least he's still in one piece. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Emerald Law Group Recovers $1.15 Million for Family of Woman Killed by Parolee

Settlement follows allegations that state failed to protect mother despite history of domestic violenceEmerald Law Group Logo SEATTLE, Aug. 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Emerald Law Group has secured a $1.15 million settlement on behalf of the estate and surviving children of Destinie Gates-Jackson, a 33-year-old mother of two who was fatally assaulted in 2020 by her former boyfriend, Lester Thompson. The civil complaint alleged that the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) failed in its duty to supervise Thompson, who was on parole at the time for a prior assault against Ms. Gates-Jackson. According to the lawsuit, despite Thompson's history of domestic violence and an active no-contact order, he remained in the community under DOC supervision. The litigation revealed that the DOC allegedly failed to adequately monitor his compliance with parole conditions. Thompson later absconded from supervision, ultimately leading to the fatal incident that claimed Ms. Gates-Jackson's life. Emerald Law Group represented the estate of Destinie Gates-Jackson on behalf of her two children — a minor daughter and an adult son — who are now left to navigate life without their mother. 'This case is a devastating reminder of how systemic failures in supervision and accountability can have fatal consequences,' said Michael Gustafson, attorney at Emerald Law Group. 'While no amount of money can bring back Destinie, we hope this settlement provides her children with some measure of justice and stability. Our team remains committed to holding institutions accountable when they neglect their duty to protect those most at risk.' The settlement is intended to support the long-term care and well-being of the children, including funds for housing, education, and therapy. 4 arrested in connection with July 10 shootout between prison staffers, alleged carjackers

Pueblo police recently arrested four men in connection with a July 10 shootout between off-duty Colorado prison workers and alleged carjacking suspects, police announced in an Aug. 4 news release. Quincy Stephens, 20, Damion Trujillo, 20, Marcus Pechek, 19, and Juaquin Trujillo, 19, were arrested on charges of attempted second-degree homicide and aggravated robbery. A 16-year-old male suspect remains at large, according to the release. Police were initially called to investigate after three people were injured when gunfire was exchanged between a group of off-duty Colorado corrections workers and alleged carjacking suspects at the Sgt. Blake A. Harris Skateboard Park in City Park. Pueblo police were made aware of the incident at approximately 2:40 a.m. that day after three people — two of the alleged carjacking suspects and one of the corrections workers — showed up at two local hospitals with gunshot injuries, according to Pueblo Police Department Community Engagement Manager Bianca Hicks. The five Colorado Department of Corrections workers, employees of the Centennial Correctional Facility in Fremont County, were skating, playing football, and hanging out at the park after its curfew when a group of five suspects allegedly tried to carjack one of the workers' vehicles. Shots were then fired by at least one CDOC officer and one suspect, Hicks said, and police later recovered 70 handgun shell casings at the scene. Two of the alleged carjacking suspects were injured by gunfire, as was one of the CDOC workers. Hicks told the Chieftain that the victims transported one of the injured suspects to a local hospital for treatment after the suspect was left behind by the rest of their party when they fled the scene. Stephens and Damion Trujillo remained in custody at the Pueblo County jail as of Aug. 4, while Pechek was released on bond after spending just under six days in custody, police said in the release. Juaquin Trujillo was also released on bond after spending three days in custody. Stephens will make his first court appearance on Aug. 21, Pechek is scheduled for a plea hearing on Aug. 14, Damion Trujillo is scheduled for a bond hearing on Aug. 14, and Juaquin Trujillo is scheduled for a setting on the same day. All four cases are set in the court of Judge William Alexander. More: Victim in Pueblo's seventh homicide of 2025 identified by coroner Questions, comments, or story tips? Cyberattack targets North St. Paul Police Department, city says

Data at the North St. Paul Police Department may have been "compromised" as a result of a cyberattack, city officials said Monday. City Manager Brian Frandle said the following in a memo for an emergency City Council meeting that happened Monday afternoon: The North St. Paul Police Department recently experienced a cyberattack that may have compromised some data. To ascertain the full scope of the attack, and to ensure that all cybersecurity threats have been addressed and that the attack cannot continue, City Staff are requesting that the council engage cybersecurity experts with the McDonald Hopkins firm. During the meeting, the City Council voted to approve a contract with McDonald Hopkins. The city says the law firm works with a team of cybersecurity advisors at Arete Advisors. According to a statement of work document from Arete, the advisors will "determine the scope of the attack" and find out whether there was a data leak. Details about the attack weren't immediately known. This comes less than a week after Gov. Tim Walz activated the Minnesota National Guard to help the city of St. Paul respond to a cyberattack. Officials discovered the threat on July 25. As of Monday evening, several city-only services remain offline. Note: The above video first aired on July 30, Cummings contributed to this report.
