Meet the Masters: An all-women team from India gears up for the World Championships
This all-women team, the Team India Masters Women, has players from different cities including Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Chennai, who have come together for their monthly camp in Chennai in the run-up to the World Beach Ultimate Championships (WBUC) in Portimão, Portugal, from November 16 to 22.
'This is the first time that India is sending an all-women team in the Masters category for an international tournament. In the Masters category, all players have to be above the age of 30, and we have players between the ages of 30 and 50 years,' says Smithi Manickam, the team's coach.
A player with the Chennai-based Flywild club for ten years now, Smithi, says that in addition to monthly camps in Chennai and specific training plans, their focus is on creating a strong statement at the world championships. 'It is also important that the players have a great campaign overall. Many of our women players have a host of responsibilities, including their careers and families, and they are juggling all of this along with their love for the sport,' she says of her team.
The players all have diverse careers and interesting stories of how they discovered the sport and have seen it evolve over the years.
At 49 years old, Priya Thineshan — a player with Puyal, a Chennai-based club and the oldest member of the team — says she discovered Ultimate when she was 42 and has not looked back since. 'Growing up, I had always been interested in sports and was looking for a way to get back to it. My family, and my children in particular, have been most encouraging about this,' says Priya, who subtitles films.
While Ultimate Frisbee is a rare mixed-gender sport, Nimisha Vasava, a 32-year-old showroom manager from Ahmedabad, says that this is something she cannot stop bragging about. Her teammate, actor Gayathrie Shankar — who first discovered the sport as a great way to use the beach when she moved to Chennai — says she has seen this aspect evolve for the better through the years.
'From being asked to join teams that simply needed to meet the minimum number of women required, to being a part of an all-women team that is now going international, has been amazing,' she says.
A professor at IIM-Bengaluru, Sreelata Jonnalagedda first learnt the sport from her students, and later, as she began taking her daughter to practice sessions. 'Playing Ultimate Frisbee gave me a reason to be fit, and the best thing about the sport is truly the variety of things you can do. As an all-women team, we can take on a host of different roles, and of course, the bonding and sisterhood here are unparalleled,' she says.
For Smithi, it has been inspiring as a coach to see the grit and determination of her team. Given that the team will be coming together for monthly camps till November in Chennai, there is a lot more intense training, practice games to be played, and team-building in store for them.

Isha Gramotsavam 2025: 50k villagers across six states to prove mettle in traditional sports
New Delhi: Is sport only for the chosen few? No, according to the Isha Foundation. Now returning for its 17th edition in 2025, Isha Gramotsavam — India's largest rural sports festival — is set to reach over 35,000 villages across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Puducherry, and, for the first time, Odisha. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Organised by Isha Outreach, the registrations, which are free, for this year's event will be entirely online from July 6 to Aug 9. Isha Gramotsavam, launched by Sadhguru in 2004, expects the participation of around 5,000 teams and nearly 50,000 villagers representing 30,000 villages. The month-long tournament will begin on Aug 10 in Mysuru, featuring volleyball and para volleyball events for men and a throwball event for women — played across three levels: cluster, divisional and finals. Alongside, traditional rural games like gilli danda, tyre race and hopscotch will be revived. The grand finale on Sept 21 will be held in front of the 112-ft Adiyogi statue at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore. There's a prize pool of Rs 67 lakh, including Rs 5 lakh each for the top teams in both men's and women's categories. "The Gramotsavam is not for professional players, but for rural people — farmers, fishermen, daily-wage workers, homemakers, schoolchildren," said Swami Pulaka, the event coordinator. "The teams can only consist of players of the same village panchayat to bring communities together and celebrate local pride." Last year, over 43,000 players and 4,800 teams from 162 places participated in the rural sports event. In a heartening shift, over 10,000 women took part — 220 of them aged above 50 years — many of them stepping on a sports field for the first time in their lives. Ayesha from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, recalled, "Till two years ago, I had never played anything except in my school days. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But then I learnt about this event. The Isha volunteers persuaded not only me but also my cousins and elderly relatives to participate. We began practising after our respective work every day. The family which only met once or twice a year on special occasions started getting together every day." Volunteers too carry unforgettable memories. Neha Gupta, a Delhi-based lawyer and volunteer, shared, "I remember going to this remote village in Tamil Nadu. There I met this woman in her 70s who had never touched a ball in her life. She was very reluctant to play, worried about what people would say. Yet she wanted to experience the thrill at least once. We nudged her and she ventured into the playing field. It was one of those moments when I felt the worth of my contribution. " Pulaka acknowledged the challenges in encouraging women to break social barriers. "The idea is to push through shyness and customs," he explained. "We start indoors, playing around with a ball. Gradually, we move the activity outdoors. Once the hesitancy wears off, there is joy on the faces of the once-reluctant players." The festival has also caught the attention of sporting greats. Cricketers Virender Sehwag and Venkatesh Prasad and Rio Paralympics high jump gold winner Mariyappan Thangavelu have graced the event. In 2018, Isha Gramotsavam was honoured with the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar by the President of India for its contribution to promoting sports. The Gramotsavam continues to redefine what sport means in rural India — not as a privilege for a few, but a celebration that everyone can find joy in.

"Being a single mother, I encounter challenges when accompanying my son to restrooms. The availability of family toilets has effectively addressed this issue at the airport. It would be beneficial to have similar family washroom facilities installed across various public venues," said Anita Verma, a passenger. Odisha suspend all player, staff contracts
Kolkata: On a day that Khalid Jamil was announced the head coach of India men's national team, the uncertainty surrounding the Indian football's top-flight league hit hard with Odisha FC suspending all player and staff contracts from August 5. As speculation grew over the club's overall future, the India Super League (ISL) side's owner Rohan Sharma clarified things through his social media account later in the evening. "We haven't shut down the club despite the headlines. Key staff members are retained, our women's team will be operational. However, it becomes harder to justify to my stakeholders to sink Crs (crores) upon Crs with nothing to show for it, and no end in sight," club owner Rohan Sharma wrote on 'X'. "We have - No Clarity when the League will Start - Nowhere to practice/play/work in Odisha - No way to get sponsorship since there's no season - No way to engage investors with an expiring participation agreement. We hoped something would give, but sadly it hasn't," added Sharma. Hoping for a better resolution of the current situation, he wrote further, "We didn't go into this offseason planning to take this step. In fact we had made 5 signings until it became clear things are delayed. We desperately hope the above issues get resolved; maybe doing this will prompt people to fast-track solutions so we can get back to work." Earlier in the day, Delhi Soccer Private Limited (DSPL), the parent company of the Bhubaneswar-based side, issued a letter confirming the implementation of a 'Force Majeure' in the wake of an uncertain future of ISL. A letter signed by Ajit Panda, head of finance, DSPL, stated, "As you may be aware, the commencement of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season has been indefinitely suspended due to the inability of Football Sports Development Limited and the All India Football Federation to reach an agreement on the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement." "This unfortunate development has placed Odisha FC in an extremely challenging position, arising from circumstances that are entirely beyond the Club's control and unforeseeable in nature — akin to a force majeure event," the letter added. "After careful and thorough consideration, and in alignment with the evolving situation, the Club has arrived at a difficult decision and is proposing to place your engagement with the Club under suspension with effect from 5th August, 2025. Please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly and is being made on a bona fide basis, in the best interest of the Club and its stakeholders," the club added in the letter. Odisha FC also stated that they would not restrict any player willing to explore other professional opportunities which could be available during this time and would facilitate any mutual termination of contract if it is a preferred solution.
