Pennsylvania Turnpike to introduce gantries at toll stations
Drivers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike have probably seen some changes on the side of the road recently, and those changes are just the first of many over the next few years. "I think a lot of folks are questioning, 'What the heck are you guys building?'" said Crispin Havener, assistant press secretary for the Pennsylvania Turnpike. "'What are these things that are over the turnpike now?'" Those things, resembling large stanchions that extend over the road from a small hut on the side of the road, are called gantries, and they will essentially become the replacement for the toll booths that have occupied the interchanges on and off the turnpike for the last eight-plus decades. "All the E-Z Pass equipment, all the Toll By Plate equipment will be moved over on these gantries, essentially allowing you to travel at highway speeds," said Havener. The addition of the gantries will take place over the next couple of years. This new technology allows the turnpike to operate on Open Road Tolling, which means no more toll booths or bottlenecks at lanes entering or exiting the highway. The toll booths on this side of the state are expected to be completely removed by the end of 2028, and the interchanges will be reconfigured for better traffic flow. "We're able to collect the tolls as you're travelling that highway speed, rather than through the traditional toll booth method we've had, for now almost 85 years," said Havener. "This would make it easier for traveling as you would normally. "We'll be able to track whether your E-Z Pass transponder or your Toll By Plate, if you don't have an E-Z Pass, and be able to collect our toll that way." Essentially, the equipment from the gantries will read the E-Z Pass transponder, or license plates for Toll By Plate drivers, and transmit that information to the adjacent hut. Then, through a new fiber network that's being built subsequently with the gantries, that information will be sent back to their operations hub in Harrisburg. This system was implemented earlier this year on the eastern side of the Commonwealth, outside Reading, and along the Northeast Extension. The goal is to fully launch the program in western Pennsylvania by January 2027. Havener said, so far, the results have gone as smoothly as expected. "This is kind of a two-decade-long journey that began with the original launch of E-Z Pass," he said. "Now, it has brought us to the modern day, where we are very excited to see how this goes in the west."

Trump's tariffs: Lutnick reaffirms Aug 1 'hard deadline'
Yahoo Finance Washington Correspondent Ben Werschkul joins Market Catalysts with Julie Hyman to discuss the August 1 tariff deadline, which US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently reiterated as a "hard deadline." He also discusses Wall Street Journal reports that the EU is preparing for a trade war with retaliatory measures. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts here. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, he said on CBS news over the weekend that it is a hard deadline for when new tariff rates will set in, but that countries can still negotiate after that date. So, where are we with some of these trade deals? Joining me now with the latest Yahoo Finance Washington Correspondent, Ben Worshler. And the one the negotiations with the EU seem to be most in focus right now, right? For sure, yeah. Europe Europe is definitely most in focus this morning amongst these wide range of deals. And what we're getting on the Europe side here is sort of a picture of what a no-deal scenario looks like. We got there's a bunch of reports from Brussels, um, in in recent hours of of what you countermeasures could be if no deal is reached by by August 1st. Um, the big ones would be retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of US goods from steel to bourbon to a whole bunch of goods. A big escalation would be what what are called, um, anti-coercion measures that the the European Union has, which could allow them to simply restrict trade. That would obviously be a massive escalation here in terms of this standoff between the US and the EU. But it does come. I should note as both sides say that they are looking they are they're still negotiating. They're still confident that they're and in some cases confident that there could be a deal, um, on the earlier side. Um, Lutnick also said on CBS over the weekend, there's plenty of room for a deal. So, and and that he was talking to them as recently as as as Sunday. So there's still lots of back and forth there, but it's kind of a get ready for the worst-case scenario if that if that comes. One other nuance I wanted to, I think is important for investors though, and you saw it in that Lutnick quote, is they're saying the White House message is evolving a little bit to say that there is a firm deadline for tariff rates on August 1st, but not necessarily tariff trade deals. Um, Lutnick had the comments, Best Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Best this morning on CNBC had a similar line about how they're not they're they're they're they're not looking to rush deals. They're waiting for high-quality deals is how he put it, which which could give us a little wiggle room on this August 1st deadline for deals, but according to the White House, not necessarily tariffs. Another front in this that I think falls in the similar theme is India, which Indian negotiators were here in Washington just this weekend for a fifth round of talks. They came away according to Indian media confident in what they describe as a mini deal, but with a key caveat here, uh, the the any announcement is not likely to come until September or October. So the emerging question is kind of what happens in August and September as these as these deals aren't necessarily done, but but but Trump has promised rates will go into place. Yeah, the message seems to be that they're not pushing it back again. Is that the way to read it? Yeah, I think I think on all these fronts. So it's the overall dynamic here, I think, is especially true with Europe is that the European is that Trump team keeps asking for additional concessions. We we had reports, um, a few weeks ago of there seemed to be a consensus around a 10% tariff on the European Union. That that is clearly less likely now. Trump and his team are floating things like a 15 or 20% rate, and his letter last week was a 30% rate. So there's definitely a a lot of pushback on both sides on all these fronts with with Trump and his team in their own accounting pushing for the the best deal possible for certainly. And it could go right up to this August 1st deadline or even beyond.

Illinois Cracks Down on Robo-Hiring, Missouri's Law Whiplash and Texas Waits
07/21/2025, St. Louis MO // KISS PR Brand Story PressWire // Illinois: AI Gets a Human Chaperone Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Illinois is putting AI in the HR hot seat. House Bill 3773 ( HB 3773 ), signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, prohibits employers from using artificial intelligence in ways that discriminate against protected classes, which includes the use of ZIP codes as a proxy for race, gender, or other protected characteristics. 'The law demands transparency,' says Jacob Wiczer, partner at Source One Staffing. 'If employers use AI for hiring, firing, promotions, or any other employment decision, they must notify employees and applicants. ' Violations can trigger civil rights complaints, investigations, and penalties under the Illinois Human Rights Act. What Illinois Employers Need to Do How can Staffing Agencies Help? Staffing agencies offer significant value for employers by helping them monitor AI tools to ensure compliance. 'Staffing partners, like Source One, can provide the people, tools and resources to ensure their clients remain both compliant and productive,' says Wiczer. Adds Wiczer, 'A staffing company can also offer alternative, human-led screening and selection processes to find qualified candidates, while reducing reliance on AI, especially for roles with high-risk AI bias or where legal restrictions make AI use impractical.' In short: know your tech, or it could cost you. Missouri: Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave—Now You See Them, Now You Don't Missouri voters passed Proposition A in Nov. 2024, which raised the minimum wage and introduced a paid sick leave mandate for most private-sector employees. As of May 1, 2025, workers began accruing paid sick leave (one hour for every 30 worked, up to 56 hours a year), and the minimum wage is set to rise to $15/hour on Jan. 1, 2026. But just as employers were getting used to the new rules, the Missouri legislature threw a curveball. The Missouri Senate passed House Bill 567 on May 14, 2025, repealing most of Proposition A. House Bill 567, which is expected to be signed in mid-July by Governor Kehoe, repeals Proposition A 's paid sick leave mandate and any future automatic minimum wage increases tied to inflation. The paid sick leave mandate vanishes on Aug. 28, 2025, but the $15/hour minimum wage increase will still take effect on Jan. 1, 2026 (with no further automatic increases after that). What Missouri Employers Need to Do Texas: Still Waiting for the Next Move While Illinois and Missouri are keeping employers on their toes, Texas is taking a breather — for now. There are no new statewide employment law mandates for private employers in 2025 or 2026, yet. Texas employers should be aware of pending legislation regarding the E-Verify program under Texas Senate Bill 324 ( SB 324 ). The bill was approved by the Texas Senate in April 2025 and is currently pending in the House. If the bill passes, nearly all Texas employers will have to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm that new hires are legally authorized to work in the United States. However, there is no indication that the bill would require retroactive verification of all existing employees. The bill's effective date will be set upon passage by both chambers and the governor's signature. If passed, implementation would be expected to begin in early 2026. For now, only state agencies, public universities, and certain businesses are required to use E-Verify. Stay tuned: things could change quickly if SB 324 gets the green light. Staffing Agencies: Your Compliance Lifeline Staffing companies are more valuable than ever in regulatory rollercoaster. They can: The Bottom Line for Employers in Illinois, Missouri, and Texas No matter where you are, staying compliant with changing state and federal regulations means staying informed — partnering with a staffing agency can help on all fronts.
