House Speaker Johnson Breaks Rank With Trump Over Epstein Files: ‘Put Everything Out There'
US House Speaker Mike Johson made the comments while speaking to right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson said the documents related to financier and sex predator Jeffrey Epstein are a 'delicate matter" and that these matters should be known to public, urging the Justice Department to release the documents.
'It's a very delicate subject, but we should put everything out there and let the people decide. I agree with the sentiment that we need to put it out there," the Republican was quoted as saying by the The Guardian.
The remarks mark a shift in the stance of the US House Speaker, who enjoyed tremendous backing from US President Donald Trump, to be in the position he is now. However, he chose to point out that American right-wing and Conservatives have grown tired with the opaque nature of the case.
The Justice Department last week concluded that Epstein died by suicide and that no list of clients would be made public, drawing backlash from the MAGA faithful. The backlash only grew stronger after Donald Trump, who previously campaigned on exposing Epstein's network, appeared to downplay the issue.
'One year ago our Country was DEAD, now it's the 'HOTTEST' Country anywhere in the World. Let's keep it that way, and not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about," Trump posted on Truth Social, enraging his supporters.
'She needs to come forward and explain that to everybody," Johnson said. 'We need the DoJ focusing on the major priorities. So let's get this thing resolved."
Trump defended Bondi but suggested that some information might still come out.
'She's handled it very well, and it's going to be up to her. Whatever she thinks is credible, she should release," he said.
Bondi, however, sidestepped Epstein-related questions during a separate press conference on fentanyl overdoses.

Man arrested with blackbuck skin, wild animal nails in Amreli district
Amreli, Jul 18 (PTI) A man was arrested in Gujarat's Amreli district for alleged possession of a blackbuck skin and two nails of wild animals, which he used for tantric practise at his home, a forest department official said Friday. Acting on a tip-off, Gir (East) forest division officials carried out a search at the house of one Veljibhai Matang in Simran village under Savarkundla taluka and recovered two wild animal nails and a blackbuck skin, Range Forest Officer Pratapbhai Chandu said. Possession of body parts of protected wild animals is illegal under law. 'The accused used these items for tantric practices at home. When questioned, he said they belonged to his grandfather and are more than two decades old which his family used for worship," he said. Prima facie, the nails appear to be of a lion or leopard, and have been sent for forensic examination, he said. Matang was arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, Chandu said, adding further probe was underway. Trump says there is no ‘smoking gun' in the Jeffrey Epstein files, blames Democrats for controversy
US President Donald Trump on Friday, once again sought to downplay the Jeffrey Epstein controversy that has long captivated his MAGA base, arguing there is no 'smoking gun' in the files linked to the disgraced financier. 'If there was a 'smoking gun' on Epstein, why didn't the Dems, who controlled the 'files' for four years, and had Garland and Comey in charge, use it? BECAUSE THEY HAD NOTHING!!!' Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. The post followed Trump's Thursday night announcement that he had directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue the release of additional Epstein-related materials. 'Produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony' Trump said Bondi had been instructed to 'produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval'. In response, Bondi confirmed she would pursue court action, potentially as soon as Friday. However, any release of grand jury records would require a legal process, including judicial review and consideration of victims' privacy. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump allegedly sent Epstein a letter for his 50th birthday in 2003 — a claim the President now disputes. The report claimed that Trump contributed a 'bawdy' letter — featuring a typewritten personal message alongside a drawing of a naked woman's silhouette — to an album Ghislaine Maxwell had compiled as a gift for Epstein's birthday. In an interview with the Journal, Trump denied writing the letter and has threatened legal action. 'I told Rupert Murdoch it was a Scam, that he shouldn't print this Fake Story. But he did, and now I'm going to sue his ass off, and that of his third-rate newspaper,' Trump wrote last night. 'I look forward to getting Rupert Murdoch to testify in my lawsuit against him and his 'pile of garbage' newspaper, the WSJ. That will be an interesting experience!!!' Trump posted online Friday. DOJ denies Epstein 'client list' theories Trump's order comes amid pressure from MAGA-aligned voices to 'do more' after the Justice Department and FBI issued a memo stating no further disclosures in the Epstein case were 'appropriate or warranted.' The memo concluded there was no evidence Epstein kept a so-called 'client list' or that he blackmailed prominent individuals. It also confirmed, again, that Epstein died by suicide in prison while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. Earlier, Bondi had responded to the DOJ memo, saying it 'speaks for itself.' Trump, meanwhile, has tried to distance himself from the growing intrigue that conspiracy theorists and far-right influencers continue to stoke around Epstein's ties to elites. He has repeatedly called the Epstein files a 'Democratic hoax' and dismissed Republican supporters pressing for deeper investigation as 'stupid' and 'foolish.' Despite some media speculation, the White House has ruled out appointing a special prosecutor. 'The idea was floated from someone in the media to the president. The president would not recommend a special prosecutor in the Epstein case. That's how he feels,' said press secretary Karoline Leavitt at Thursday's briefing.
