Revealed: The common texting mistake that could explain your unhappy relationship

In this day and age, much of our everyday communication takes place over text message.
But there's one texting mistake that could be fuelling an unhappy relationship, a study has found.
Researchers discovered that the simple act of using emojis can boost feelings of closeness and relationship satisfaction within a couple.
So if you're adverse to using the small icons, it could be a good time to start including them in your messages.
The team, from The University of Texas at Austin, recruited 260 adults aged between 23 and 67 to take part in their study.
They were randomly assigned to read 15 text message exchanges – all of which contained the same text but half included emojis while the other half had none.
Participants were instructed to imagine themselves as the sender of each message and to focus on their partner's replies.
Analysis revealed that people rated partners who used emojis as more responsive than partners who communicated through text alone.

Emoji use was also linked with an increase in closeness and relationship satisfaction.
Surprisingly, there was no significant differences between the use of face and non-face emojis – for example, a smiley face and a love heart - suggesting that the type of emoji used may be less critical than previously thought.
Instead, it may be that the simple presence of emojis drives the perception of improved responsiveness and better relationships, the researchers said.
They explained that emojis may serve not only as expressive devices but also as signals of attentiveness and engagement.
Writing in the journal PLOS One they said: 'The study revealed that emojis can boost relationship satisfaction by signaling emotional attentiveness.
'Interestingly, it's not the type of emoji but simply their presence that makes people feel closer to their partner.'
They said their findings may be explained through the fact that emojis convey emotions that can be difficult to express through text alone, making messages feel more personal and thoughtful.
Emojis can also enhance the emotional appeal of messages, they explained, evoking stronger emotional responses and making conversations livelier and more engaging.
Finally, they can help clarify the tone and intent of a message, reducing the risk of misunderstandings.
'Adding a heart, smiley face or other simple emoji can make messages feel more personal and engaging,' they wrote.
'Simple symbols like thumbs-up or sparkles can effectively convey positivity and engagement, even in casual conversations.'
Experts recently warned against sending the smiley face emoji to certain people.
While Millennials and older generations see the smiley face as an expression of happiness, Gen Z – aged between 13 and 28 – tend to interpret it as a sign of sarcasm or irony.
Erica Dhawan, author of Digital Body Language: How to Build Trust and Connection, No Matter the Distance, older generations tend to read emojis as representing the objects they literally portray.
That means a smiley face is a happy smile, a snowflake means that it is snowing, and an aubergine is referring to a type of vegetable.
But for those who grew up messaging over social media, emoji often have other meanings that have built up over time, she said.
Another emoji that can come across as sarcastic is the 'sparkle' emoji.
Older users often use these cute sparkles to express positive emotions such as gratitude or excitement.
However, for Gen Z, it is more likely to mean that a statement has a sarcastic tone, just like members of older internet messaging boards used to add '/s' after a statement.
The same is true of the 'thumbs up' emoji, which is used to express positive affirmation by older users but is often seen as sarcastic by Gen Z.
ARE EMOJIS RUINING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE?
Emojis may be a fun form of communication but they are destroying the English language, a recent study by Google has revealed.
Smiley faces, love hearts, thumbs up and other cartoon icons - rather than words - are the preferred method of communication by teenagers, who are considered the worst offenders regarding the decline in grammar and punctuation.
More than a third of British adults believe emojis are the reason for the deterioration in proper language usage, according to the study commissioned by the Google-owned site YouTube.
Of the two thousand adults, aged 16 to 65, who were asked their views, 94 per cent reckoned English was in a state of decline, with 80 per cent citing youngsters as the worst offenders.
The most common errors made by Brits are spelling mistakes (21 per cent), followed closely by apostrophe placement (16 per cent) and the misuse of a comma (16 per cent).
More than half of British adults are not confident with their command of spelling and grammar, the study also found.
Furthermore, around three-quarters of adults rely on emoji to communicate, in addition to a dependence on predictive text and spell checking.
The use of emojis has seeped into our culture to such an extent that the Oxford Dictionary's 'Word of the Year' in 2015 wasn't actually a word at all - it was the Face With Tears emoji, which shows just how influential the little graphic images have become.
They were first used by Japanese mobile phone companies in the late 1990s to express an emotion, concept or message in a simple, graphic way.

Archaeologists have discovered a city in Peru thought to be about 3,500 years old. The city, called Penico, is likely to have served as a trading post linking early Pacific coast communities with those living in the Andes mountains and Amazon basin. Located around 200 miles north of Lima in the country's Barranca province, the urban centre sits on a hillside around 1,970ft above sea level and is believed to have been founded between 1,800 and 1,500BC – around the same time as early civilisations flourished in the Middle East and Asia. Drone footage of the site taken by researchers shows a circular structure on a hillside terrace at the city's centre, surrounded by the remains of stone and mud buildings. The site bears a striking resemblance to the ancient city of Caral, the oldest civilisation in the Americas, 17 miles to the west. Scientists believe the city may have been formed after Caral collapsed as a result of climate change. Having emerged around 5,000 years ago, Caral is considered a contemporary of civilisations in Egypt, India, Sumeria and China. Yet unlike them, it developed in complete isolation, according to researchers. Caral's two sunken circular courts are believed to have served as ceremonial spaces for gatherings and rituals. Ruth Shady, the archaeologist who led the research into Penico and the excavation of Caral in the 1990s, said the newly unveiled city is especially important for understanding what became of the Caral civilisation after it was devastated by environmental changes.. 'They were situated in a strategic location for trade, for exchange with societies from the coast, the highlands and the jungle,' Ms Shady said. Marco Machacuay, an archaeologist and researcher with Peru's ministry of culture, said that Penico's importance lies in it being the continuation of the Caral society, which fell into decline around 1,800BC, possibly because of drought and flooding. After eight years of research, archaeologists have identified up to 18 structures in Penico, including ceremonial temples, residential complexes and murals. The walls of a central plaza stand out for their sculptural reliefs and depictions of the pututu, a conch shell trumpet used in religious ceremonies whose sound carries over long are believed to have been symbols of power and authority in Penico society. In other buildings, researchers found human remains, clay sculptures of human and animal figures, ceremonial objects and necklaces made from beads and seashells. The combination of artefacts from the site blend influences from the coast, the mountains and the jungle, leading archaeologists to conclude that the city was a nexus for trade in the region. Yoshio Cano, a spokesman for the Caral Archaeological Zone, told local media: 'Evidence has been found of a great deal of trade not only in the Supe Valley, but also with the Huaura Valley, because it is located in a very strategic place in the Supe Valley (...) And, in addition, evidence has been found of integration also with the mountain and jungle areas, and over long distances.' Penico officially opened its doors for tourists to visit the ancient city on July 3. As part of the project, ceremonial spaces within the city have been digitally reconstructed to enable visitors to see what the city would have looked like in its prime. Peru is home to many of America's most significant archaeological discoveries, including the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and the mysterious Nazca lines, located in a desert region along the country's central coast. The Machu Picchu mountain citadel was built by the Inca empire around the time of the 15th century, hundreds of years after Penico flourished as a city. Meanwhile, the Nazca Lines, a series of images etched into the ground resembling animals, are thought to date to between 200BC and 500AD.

It's often said that happiness is about finding joy in the little things in life - and now scientists appear to have found proof in that. Just five minutes a day performing 'micro-acts of joy' that foster positive emotions is enough to banish stress, boost health, and improve sleep quality, experts found. According to stress expert Dr Elissa Epel, listening to laughter, admiring a flower on a local walk or doing something nice for a friend can measurably improve people's emotional well-being and attitudes toward life. Epel, an expert on stress and ageing who oversaw the new research, said: 'We were quite taken aback by the size of the improvements to people's emotional well-being.' Epel's team at the University of California San Francisco studied almost 18,000 people, mainly from the U.S., UK, and Canada, for the web-based 'Big Joy Project' over a two-year period to 2024. It was the first study to look at whether small, easy-to-do acts that take minimal time could have measurable and lasting effects on people. Participants were asked to perform five-ten minute acts of joy for a week. Prof Epel said the thousands of people who took part in her project matched the positive results achieved by programs that required months of classes, for hours at a time. The study, published in the Journal Of Medical Internet Research, asked participants to perform seven acts over seven days, such as sharing a moment of celebration with someone else, doing something kind for another person, making a gratitude list or watching an awe-inspiring video about nature. Prof Epel said her team picked tasks that were focused on promoting feelings of hope and optimism, wonder and awe, or fun and silliness. Each task took under ten minutes, including answering short questions. Participants were quizzed about their emotional and physical health at the start and end of the week-long project, providing a measure of their emotional well-being, positive emotions, and 'happiness agency', along with their stress and sleep quality. The psychologists explained that emotional well-being includes how satisfied people are with their lives and whether they have purpose and meaning. Happiness agency is how much control they feel they have over their emotions. The team found improvements in all areas, and the benefits increased depending on how fully people participated in the program, meaning those who completed all seven days saw greater benefits than those who only managed two or three. While further research was needed, according to Epel, it's clear that a daily dose of joy could help people in trying times: 'All of this well-being stuff, it's not a luxury. 'We often say that we'll let ourselves be happy once we've reached some point or finished some task. Well, we want to flip that – we need the energy of joy to get through the hard parts. These are really necessary skills.'

Royal Navy's HMS Protector gets Freedom of the City of Cambridge

A Royal Navy ship has been given a Freedom of the City honour by a city that is about 50 miles from the nearest bit of coast. HMS Protector was given the award by Cambridge City Council at the city's military fair last vessel, an ice patrol ship usually based in Antarctica, has been recognised for its ongoing contributions to researching climate change and works with two research organisations from Cambridge, the council said. Dinah Pounds, Labour councillor who presented the award, said: "We are very grateful for their work and contributions to tackling climate change." Working in the Antarctic, the ship has supported scientific research, wildlife mapping, researching changing climate and the continent's shifting waters. This work is carried out by the Scott Polar Research Institute and the British Antarctic Survey – both based in added: "We declared a climate change emergency in 2019, and lot of work has gone into making Cambridge more climate resilient."This is a wonderful way to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community."The Freedom of the City parade at Parker's Piece included people from HMS Protector, armed forces veterans and cadets. Capt Tom Weaver said he looked "forward to strengthening the relationship" between the city and the ship while they continued their "research into the impacts of climate change and human activity" on the south pole last awarded Freedom of the City to the Hungarian city of Szeged in 2011.
