Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa awarded for taking top ‘ownership' of team

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has led the NFL in passer rating and completion percentage and passing yards.
What could bring Tagovailoa to another level is holding teammates accountable like never before.

Tagovailoa, 27, is about to begin his sixth NFL season. He is a husband and father of two.
And Tagovailoa is in the same offense, under the same head coach for a fourth consecutive season.
There are no excuses. And it appears Tua is embracing the challenge to take complete command.

In the second week of organized team activities, coach Mike McDaniel awarded Tua an orange practice jersey for his recent performance.
'(Tua) had the most ownership of all the players on each and every down,' McDaniel said.

McDaniel explained that Tua had responded well when teammates were not aligned properly.

'He really had command and resolve,' McDaniel said.
Tua cannot defer to anyone in 2025. Not Tyreek Hill or Jonnu Smith or Aaron Brewer or Austin Jackson.
Terron Armstead has retired. Raheem Mostert is in Las Vegas.
It must be the quarterback setting a tone and calling out those who are not on board with the plan.

Tua Tagovailoa more decisive than ever in Year 6 with Dolphins
Quarterbacks growing into a leadership role is a storyline for every quarterback, every season.
But it is certainly relevant for Tua, who came into the league with a propensity to defer to older players.
'Tua in Year 6, he's definitely a lot more confident and decisive on and off the field,' tackle Austin Jackson said. 'He knows what people are supposed to be doing in terms of training. He knows what we're doing on the field. He knows how to take care of his body.

'He knows how to unite guys, bring us together for team camaraderie and stuff, just to get together. He's a full-blown leader, and I think he's showing that he wants to take control of this team and he is.'

Most essential Colts No. 8: Can Camryn Bynum transform this secondary?

In a salary-cap league like the NFL, finding building blocks is essential. As teams churn and burn the roster through the draft and bargain signings in free agency, it helps to find the players who are either a cut above the rest or can perform a task few others can. They relieve the pressure on everyone. Over the next few weeks, we'll be ranking the 15 most essential players to the Colts' success entering the 2025 season. It's a subjective process, weighing factors such as ability, positional value within a scheme, age, leadership and durability. To make it simpler, we're asking the following two questions about these players: 1. How difficult would he be to replace for more than a month? 2. What does the Colts' ceiling become in 2025 and beyond if this player hits his? Unlike in recent seasons, the pressure appears to be ramping up on what this year's Colts team needs to accomplish. Anthony Richardson enters a critical third season with plenty to prove. The team is under new ownership with Jim Irsay's passing and the transition to his three daughters. And the Colts have now not made the playoffs for four seasons, with no playoff wins in six and no AFC South titles in 10. Thus, these rankings will skew a little more toward 2025 importance than they have in recent seasons. Here's the list so far: 9. Quenton Nelson, guard 10. Tyler Warren, tight end 11. Laiatu Latu, defensive end 12. Daniel Jones, quarterback 13. Kenny Moore II, cornerback 14. Zaire Franklin, linebacker 15. Alec Pierce, wide receiver Up next is No. 8, Camryn Bynum. Position: Free safety Age: 26 Experience: 5th season Last year's rank: N/A 2024 stats: 96 tackles, 3 interceptions, 10 passes defensed, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 tackles-for-loss with 17 starts in 17 games Why he's here: A year ago, the Colts had another safety in the top 10 of this list. That was Julian Blackmon, and he was primed for a breakout season and also in charge of holding together one of the youngest secondaries in the league. But Blackmon hurt his shoulder early, switched positions and never found that consistent play. As a result, the Colts' defense fell apart in the middle of the field, and this spring, general manager Chris Ballard went on a desperate search for answers. Camryn Bynum is here to be one of those answers. The Colts pursued him as aggressively as possible, inking him to a four-year, $60 million deal. In total contract value, it makes him the fourth-highest paid player on the roster. They made the signing because of the need but also because of all of the ways that Bynum can be a solution. He's become as reliable and versatile as they come, with zero missed games the past three seasons and multiple interceptions in each one. He'll rotate from free safety to strong safety to even some moments at nickel. Last season, that paid off in one of the more aggressive defenses under Brian Flores and led the Vikings to a 14-3 season. The idea is that he can come in and bring much of the same under new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Anarumo runs a man-heavy scheme that asks the safeties to rotate and surprise the quarterback. With a developing but limited safety in Nick Cross across from him, it'll be on Bynum to coordinate this group and provide strong coverage in the middle of the field, or an area that consistently killed the Colts last season. Bynum doesn't quite have to patch things together the way Blackmon was asked to, as Bynum was just one of two splash additions to the secondary this offseason (corner Charvarius Ward was the other). With Cross and Jaylon Jones taking a step and Pro Bowlers at the other two spots, his job is more to lead this group as one of the best on the Colts' roster all of a sudden. His position makes it hard to climb much higher than No. 8, but his floor is also higher than most given his age, durability and consistency. If he's as advertised with the Colts, he'll be exactly what they've needed to add for a few years.

Insider reveals what Steelers could get for T.J. Watt trade, shoots down first-round pick

The T.J. Watt contract dilemma may be far from over — and as trade rumors continue to pile on, one insider has given his two cents on the situation. On Thursday's episode of The Rich Eisen Show, a guest appearance by insider Tom Pelissero presented fans with an interesting take on what the Steelers star defender could demand on the trade market: Advertisement 'What can you get, at this point, for T.J. Watt?' Pelissero said. 'For one thing, a 2026 draft pick doesn't help you. But even if you were getting a 2026 draft pick, is somebody giving up a first-round pick and more for T.J. Watt? Again, never say never, Rich, but when the Bengals were — at Trey Hendrickson's request — shopping Trey Hendrickson earlier this offseason, they were asking for a first-round pick. They weren't being offered a first-round pick for a guy who led the league in sacks last year and has like 35 sacks over the past two seasons. … 'Could the Steelers even get a first-round pick? If you're offered a second or something — and again, is a 2026 second, it doesn't help you when you're all in on 2025 — would it even make sense to consider it?' The Steelers have reportedly remained adamant about getting a deal done with Watt — but Adam Schefter has reported outside trade interest is expected to rise after the arrivals of big-contract players like Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith. Advertisement Will the Steelers extend their star player and silence the trade rumors once and for all? Or will Watt's potential demand to become the highest-paid defender in the league push the two sides past a point of no return? Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt checks in at No. 2 among all pass rushers in NFL

For years, the conversation of who the best pass rusher in the NFL is has come down to the Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett and the Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt. Both players are elite at their position, and the fact that they both play in the AFC North just makes it tougher to compare since they see so much of each other. When it comes to ranking the two of them, both sides can make a strong case for their guy being No. 1 and love to try and punch holes in the game of the other guy. ESPN recently put out their ranking of the top pass rushers in the NFL based on a poll of NFL executives, coaches and scouts and to no one's surprise, Garrett and Watt were No. 1 and No. 2. Advertisement Based on the voting, the lowest Watt was placed on a ballot was third and the lowest Garrett showed up was fourth. Trying to sort between the two is splitting hairs, but of course, we are biased and think Watt is better. And not just as a better pass rusher, but a better all-around defensive player.
