Kylie Minogue was my first CD - seeing her perform was not what I expected
As per her 2007 hit: 'Wow, wow, wow, wow.'
Kylie Minogue is not consigned to the past, even if it is nearing four decades since her breakout 80s track, The Loco-Motion.
Alongside – oddly – Elvis Presley, Kylie's 2001 album Fever, with Love At First Sight, In Your Eyes and Can't Get You Out Of My Head, was my first CD. Experiencing her live over 20 years on was an experience I will never forget, and one I was not expecting.
I thought seeing Kylie would simply be a warm, familiar burst of sunny nostalgia all these years on, but she was everything and more, with outfit changes galore, whiplash dance moves, and a voice that never, ever falters.
In 2025, the 57-year-old is past, present and future. She is a chart-topping discography of pop, disco and even country-inspired bangers dating back to before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Right now, Kylie is the only solo female artist to have performed over 21 times at the O2, as she explained last night, while clutching her chest, shaking her head and wiping away tears.
But Kylie is also the future. She's spearheading the LGBT+ music scene, with album Tension, from which her global mega-hit Padam, Padam was born. It was clear last night that she's a modern day icon as much as an 80s, 90s, or 00s one, with dramatic cries of 'Mother!' audible from youngsters in the crowd.
Cultural relevance partied alongside nostalgia, with fans desperately waving signs to signify it was their 50th and 80th Kylie show, demonstrating just how multifaceted her influence is. This unusual melting pot of fans made for one hell of an atmosphere.
Come Into My World cut through beaty pop hits like Get Outta My Way with a 90s trance-like romance, while Better the Devil You Know united 20,000 strangers into one huge hug of a party, everyone safe in Kylie's experienced arms.
At no point did Kylie stumble, misstep, or sing a dud note. She was spectacular and heartfelt from start to finish. Kylie has so much love for fans that she sang three mini-songs acapella at their request – Hand on Your Heart, Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi and Midnight Ride. More Trending
A highlight was Dancing, her 2018 track which veers mysteriously into country and got the audience swaying and toe-tapping in unison. When Kylie stripped things back for an acoustic version of Say Something, with all the fuss of lights, synthy beats and dancers gone, like a true professional megastar, she shone.
After a sultry, dimly-lit and powerful turn in Slow, the last three songs of the show were unbridled euphoria. All The Lovers was a floaty, enchanting pop explosion and the highlight of the evening, before Padam Padam saw Mother enter the room.
I looked around the O2 during the closing song of the evening, Love at First Sight, and all I saw was pits-in-the-air jubilation. That's the feeling Kylie gave me when I was six, and one she's still conjuring over 20 years later.

Hit Netflix series smashes records with 60,100,000 views in just 3 days
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Netflix's biggest show Squid Game has returned for its third and final season and it simply can't stop breaking records. The South Korean thriller is by far the most watched series on the streamer with season one securing 265,2m views after its release in 2021, easily taking the crown for number one show globally. Season two, which came out at the end of last year, followed hot on its heels with a respectable 192.6m views. Now, the third season is rounding off an impressive run by securing its own milestone as the biggest TV launch for Netflix ever after totting up an eye-watering 60.1 million views (368.4m hours) in just three days. This means, just a few days after its release, it has already become the ninth biggest non-English language show, and will no doubt join the other seasons at the top of the chart sooner rather than later. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. For those not in the know, Squid Game follows Player 456, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) who enters a competition with a prize of 45.6billion won (£24.9million). The life-changing money comes with a deadly catch, however, as each task comes to a lethal conclusion with just one person left alive by the end of the games. After winning in the first season, Gi-hun re-enters the game in second season with the sole purpose of enacting revenge. In the final season we see the culmination of Gi-hun's attempts to take the lethal games down from the inside as he goes face-to-face with the overseer, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Somehow, after three seasons and a total of 22 episodes, Squid Game manages to pull even more shocks and unexpected twists out of the bag right up until the last minute on screen, including with new games that take the savagery that the contestants are capable of to the next level. As for why season three is nearly perfect, and not a clear 10/10, the main qualm I have pertains to a group of characters shown in the trailer who are so distracting that they bring me back to real life with a sharp jolt – the VIPs. Their presence is jarring and feels unnecessary, even if the intention is to demonstrate who the game is being held for. Squid Game ends the way that it began – with audiences on the edges of their seat, questioning their morals, transfixed by the brutality of human beings but also hopeful that even in the darkest of times, goodness will prevail. A true TV masterpiece. The highly-anticipated finale, which somehow gorier than ever, has received mixed reviews from critics. 'The third season's worldbuilding efforts remain frustratingly unimaginative for the most part, although the season's final 10 minutes deliver some of its most glorious moments that take place outside the games,' The Verge wrote in a review. 'It brings me no pleasure to report that the third and thankfully last of Squid Game seasons only confirms that we, like Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), should've left that cursed island behind for good after his first victory,' Hollywood Reporter said. Meanwhile The Wrap argued: 'The show proves it's still more than capable of rendering a tragically compelling story that manages to entertain and have you emotionally invested in its characters. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Fans will have to tune in to decide whether creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has managed to pull a hattrick out the bag. More Trending One thing is for sure, Lee has no qualms that this is a 'career defining role' for him. 'When I was reading the scripts for seasons two and three, I knew that he would be put on another rollercoaster, and even more so. So I thought, wow, if I just play this character very well, it's going to be a very amazing, career-defining role for me,' he told Metro after the season three premiere. And Hwang has already teased his ideas for a potential spin-off so this may not yet be the end of the Squid Game universe. View More » Squid Game season three is available to stream on Netflix. Legendary movie star Whoopi Goldberg joins cast of long-running TV soap
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Hollywood actress Whoopi Goldberg has signed up for an appearance in a long-running soap opera. The iconic star, 69, who is best known for her parts in Sister Act and The Color Purple, announced her new role on Friday. But don't expect her to be strolling down the famed Corrie cobbles or ordering a pint in The Queen Vic – the serial drama she's joining is produced in Italy. Un Posto Al Sole (which translates to A Place in The Sun) has aired on Rai 3 since 1996, and is based around the residents of fictional apartment complex Palazzo Palladini, in a beach front suburb of Naples. While the concept may seem totally alien to us Brits, it's actually produced by Fremantle Media, who make Australian TV phenomenon Neighbours. The cast and crew adopt the same production techniques, share storyline ideas and even have similar opening titles that feature the show's residents smiling into the camera around their locality. Whoopi's casting was revealed in an Instagram post which read: 'A surprise is coming to #UnPostoAlSole: Whoopi Goldberg joins the cast!' 'Her character will be part of a special storyline and will appear in multiple episodes in 2026.' In an attached video, The View presenter said: 'I just wanted to stop in to say how happy I am to be joining the cast of Un Posto Al Sole.' 'They know it's a crazy idea, I know it's a crazy idea, but what a wonderful thing to do. So I'm looking forward to it. I'm excited.' There is one hitch though – which the EGOT winning icon was keen to address: 'I know my Italian is not perfect,' she said: 'But we've worked it out.' Details of her character are yet to be released, but it's understood that she will spend a month filming a 20 episode stint. Her first scenes will air in February 2026. Director Maria Pia Ammirati has teased that Whoopi will be central to a new plot, and she will be entwined in a love story with one of the soap's longest-running characters. 'We are writing the Whoopi line' she explained. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? 'It will be a very unique plot, with a mystery component and – why not – also a romantic encounter with one of the protagonists.' Last year, Casualty actor William Beck told Metro that Whoopi was almost cast in the BBC medical drama. 'I can tell you, there was one other name they thought about asking. They were thinking of going for Whoopi Goldberg. What a remarkable thought!' he said. 'When Covid came around, the scope and budget of TV drama has now been limited but it'll be back! We'll be doing stuff like that before too long I'm sure.' View More » Un posto al sole airs Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7:50pm on Rai 3 or can be streamed on Rai Player. All Hollyoaks spoilers for next week as long-awaited return is confirmed
Hollyoaks delivers all the thrills again next week, as my new spoilers reveal, with a first look at a highly-anticipated character comeback. I am of course referring to village legend Tom Cunningham (Ellis Hollins), whose return story isn't exactly what you might have predicted, with the character serving a stint in prison! If that wasn't exciting enough then you'll be pleased to know that Tom is determined to take down old nemesis Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix) as this rivalry is reignited once more. Elsewhere, Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis) and Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass) share a heartfelt moment in the wake of recent events but is there hope for a reunion? And speaking of reunions, Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) reunites with Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin), who is determined to keep her pregnancy a secret. Doing so in Hollyoaks, however, is easier said than done. For all this and more, keep reading! Reeling from Lucas' attack, Ste organises an emergency hospital appointment. The scans come back clear, with the doctor believing that an emotional response to trauma could be a contributing factor. Lucas storms off, with Ste rushing after to comfort him but later Ste receives a voicemail from Dillon, who is intent on confessing to the shooting of DI Banks. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Vicky urges him to keep shtum but Dillon floors Misbah and Donny with what he has to say. Rex, meanwhile, is waiting for a visit from Ste – but Donny turns up instead. Mercedes is hellbent on locating Bobby, urging Donny to believe that her son did not kill his social worker. Tony offers comfort to Mercedes, who gives him the cold shoulder. Jacob ghosts Frankie and later is on the receiving end of Clare's wrath as she comes to believe Bobby has escaped. Bobby, however, subsequently shows himself. Donny offers Rex a deal, promising him his freedom in exchange for a confession linking Clare to the exploitation. Later, Donny relays his offer to Ste, who subsequently visits Rex on the detective's behalf. Tom Cunningham, meanwhile, is in prison and he calls Donny, offering up some information on sworn nemesis Clare. Clare later pays Rex a visit in prison and, realising Tom is inside too, she orders him to kill her enemy – otherwise she will sell Jacob and Bobby to some cruel people. Dillon attends his first NA meeting, with Ste and Lucas on hand to offer him support afterwards. Later, Dillon and Lucas have a heart-to-heart, with Dillon apologising for what he did. Is there hope for HayRay? Grace wakes from her coma, with Clare paying her sister a visit. Grace reveals that it wasn't Robbie who left her for dead. Cleo arrives back in the village, notifying Sienna that she has made her mind up – she's keeping the baby but wants them to go on this adventure together. Sienna wholeheartedly accepts, agreeing to keep it between them and the McQueens for now. Things, however, are set to escalate as a wine-tasting event hosted by Tony gets underway at The Hutch. With Bobby's whereabouts unknown, Cleo's pregnancy being kept a secret, Leela in attendance, Marie and Diane back in the same room and Darren and Nancy having returned from their holiday, things look set to be awkward. More Trending Marie is convinced there is a secret in the room – but will she expose any? And if so, which? Clare, meanwhile, piles the pressure on Rex to kill Tom. Rex sets about doing just that – but will he succeed? With Tom appearing to be alone and friendless, Rex gets set to pounce. The question is: is Tom set to meet a tragic end so soon after returning to our screens?
