Indonesia's exports up 11.29% y/y in June
JAKARTA :Indonesia's exports in June rose 11.29 per cent on a yearly basis to $23.44 billion, data from the country's statistics bureau showed on Friday, higher than the 10.41 per cent forecast by economists polled by Reuters.
Indonesian exporters in recent months have brought forward their shipments to the United States ahead of the latest deadline set by President Donald Trump for tariff negotiations.
Indonesia emerged as one of the earliest countries to strike a deal with Washington to lower the U.S. tariff to 19 per cent, from a previously threatened level of 32 per cent, ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline.
In the negotiations, Jakarta agreed to eliminate most tariffs affecting U.S. industrial and agricultural products and to buy more American goods.
U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order saying the new tariff rates will be implemented in seven days.
Southeast Asia's largest economy booked a $4.11 billion surplus in June, higher than the poll's forecast of $3.45 billion but down slightly from $4.30 billion in May.

White House readies order to fine banks for dropping clients over politics: WSJ
[WASHINGTON] The White House is drafting an executive order that would impose penalties on banks for dropping customers for political reasons, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday (Aug 4). Citing a draft of the order, the Journal said regulators would be instructed to investigate whether any financial institutions breach the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, antitrust laws or consumer financial protection laws. The order, which could be signed as early as this week, would authorise monetary penalties, consent decrees or other disciplinary measures against violators, the Journal reported. It also calls on regulators to strike policies they have that might have contributed to banks dropping certain customers and requires the Small Business Administration to review the practices of banks that guarantee the agency's loans, according to the report. The White House declined to comment on the report when contacted by Reuters. US President Donald Trump in January said the CEOs of JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America did not provide banking services to conservatives. The two banks denied making banking decisions based on politics. The criticism of Wall Street banks followed accusations from congressional Republicans and Republican-led states, who claimed the institutions were engaging in 'woke capitalism' and unfairly cutting ties with gun manufacturers, fossil fuel companies, and other businesses perceived to be aligned with the political right. The Trump administration is pursuing a broad reform agenda aimed at modifying rules governing financial institutions, including capital requirements, arguing that such action will boost economic growth and unleash innovation. Mazda forecasts nearly $1 billion profit hit from US tariffs
TOKYO :Mazda Motor said on Tuesday it expects a 145.2 billion yen ($987.02 million) hit to its operating profit this business year due to U.S. import tariffs, as the Japanese automaker rolled out measures to cushion the impact. To soften the blow of the tariffs, the company said it is taking measures including changing shipping routes, increasing output at its plant in the U.S. state of Alabama and adjusting production volumes. The impact of the higher U.S. duties on results this year remained "quite significant," assuming that exports from Japan would face a 15 per cent tariff and those from Mexico 25 per cent, Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Guyton said. Without its countermeasures, the company would be at risk of a 233.5-billion-yen operating profit hit for the year ending March 2026, Guyton told reporters during a briefing. Mazda has been trying to boost sales of its CX-50 crossover sport utility vehicle. The company has a major plant in the Mexican state of Guanajuato from where it exports vehicles to the U.S. It said last week it sold about 210,000 vehicles in the United States over the first half, up 4 per cent from a year earlier. Mazda has forecast a full-year operating profit of ¥50 billion for the year ending March 2026, down sharply from the previous financial year. It had previously withheld guidance due to uncertainty surrounding the U.S. tariffs. ($1 = 147.1100 yen)
