Shotts boss on why he'll be a Clydebank fan for next fortnight as side face relegation sweat
Shotts boss John McKeown admits they face a nervy waiting game to avoid relegation - despite victory on the final day of the season keeping them out of the drop zone in the West of Scotland Premier Division.
McKeown's men came from behind at home to Gartcairn on Saturday with Liam Craig's double cancelling out Adam McGowan's opener for the visitors.
That was enough to keep Bonny out of the relegation zone in the top flight, as they finished five points clear of nearest rivals Benburb.
However, Premier champions Clydebank's potential promotion to the Lowland League means Shotts can't celebrate survival just yet.
The Bankies play East of Scotland Premier champions Musselburgh Athletic in a two-legged play-off over the next fortnight to determine who comes up to the Lowland League and if Clydebank fail, it will be bad news for Shotts.
McKeown explained: 'It is all up in the air and a strange situation. There is this situation with Clydebank being promoted that is making it awkward.
'They have got to play Musselburgh in a play-off to go up to the Lowland League, but if they don't win it would mean they stay down. Broomhill, who finished bottom of the Lowland League, are getting relegated into our league, so if Clydebank don't go up it means that four teams would need to go down.
'It means it is a bit of a waiting game for us, which is really annoying. For me, that's not the way it should be but, unfortunately, that is the way the leagues have worked it.
'It is something the leagues need to look at, things like that need to be decided by your last game of the season, rather than sitting about waiting for a couple of weeks.
'Last season when Beith won the league, they didn't have the SFA licence to go up so there was no change, it was a lot more straightforward.
'Saturday should have been a big day of celebration after retaining our league status, so it does put a bit of a dampener on it, although we are hopeful Clydebank can do the job and go into the Lowland League.
'We will need to keep the champagne on ice and sit tight.'
Clydebank travel to Musselburgh this Saturday, followed by the return leg at Holm Park on Sunday, May 25.
And McKeown admits he will be cheering them on He added: 'I'm getting my Bankies top on as we speak! I'm just hoping they can go and do us a wee turn now.
'I don't want to curse it, but Clydebank will be the bookies' favourites. They are an excellent side and it is over two legs, so you would hope they have enough to get through. We'll certainly be supporting them.'
Shotts have pulled off quite the turnaround to finish 13th in the 16-team division, having been rock bottom at the turn of the year.
So McKeown is proud of his players, no matter what unfolds. He said: 'Our boys have done all they can do, which is massive. I am delighted for them and their form since the turn of the year has been magnificent.
'It was a bit subdued and we weren't getting carried away because they know it isn't completely 'job done' yet.
'We were dead and buried at Christmas. We had a good chat with them at that time, changed our shape and worked really hard.
'They have really stuck together. It would have been easy to chuck the towel in, but they've shown a real steely mentality and put themselves in a great position. We're really proud of them.'

East Kilbride FC's 'preferred option' is to redevlop K-Park over new stadium, says club's general manager
George Fraser says discussions are on-going with South Lanarkshire Council as they seek to develop the venue, which is based in the grounds of Calderglen Country Park East Kilbride Football Club's general manager George Fraser has announced that the club's 'preferred option' is to increase the capacity at K-Park, rather than move to a new purpose-built stadium elsewhere in the town. The Scottish League Two club played their first game in the senior ranks on Saturday in front of a sold-out home section, losing 3-1 to Spartans. That follows on from their Lowland League title win last season and promotion through the play-offs, which has sparked a greater appetite for tickets at the 700-capacity venue operated by East Kilbride Community Trust. Previously, the club stated its desire to move away from the venue and there is planning permission for a 4,000-seater stadium in the Langlands area of the town. However, it is understood issues with the council have delayed this. Following East Kilbride FC's promotion in May, businessman James Kean - who is also director of East Kilbride Community Trust, the charity which won planning permission for the stadium in Langlands back in 2017 - told Lanarkshire Live Sport that he would be 'back in touch with South Lanarkshire Council to forward the plans for the new stadium.' Mr Kean added: "East Kilbride needs a stadium now. K-Park is okay, but the town needs something better. My focus is on getting a stadium fit for East Kilbride." However, the club appears to have changed tack, given Mr Fraser's comments. Speaking to the club's YouTube channel, Fraser explained: "We are in talks with the council just now regarding the stadium. There is no firm news on it yet, but we have had meetings with the council. "Our preferred option is to stay and develop K-Park to make it a true community stadium, but those talks are still on-going so we have not had a definitive answer on it yet. "We are well-advanced in terms of submitting drawings and we have laid out a vision of how we want it to look. It is whether we can get an agreement with the local authorities to enable us to do that. "Certainly, our preferred option would be to develop K-Park in the future. "We have a limited capacity at the moment and we are well aware of that, so we need a bit of patience on that side of things. "But it shouldn't stop people supporting the club. "We are in this different world in Glasgow, where most supporters will go to watch two other big teams on a Saturday and that's fine. "I think if we could increase the capacity of the stadium, I think we are confident we can get people in to fill it. "The more successful we are, the more people will take an interest in the club and want to see us." With the club's recent success, sold out games at the venue within Calderglen Country Park have become a more regular occurrence. Fraser added: "We've sold out two or three games this season already because of the interest, which is fantastic. That bodes well for the future. "We would love to hold more people but we are constrained by the size of the ground and that is why it is so vital for us to get the ground developed and give as much access to fans as possible."

East Kilbride v Spartans: Kennedy admits expectations are 'massive' as club eye League Two title
The Lowland League champions make their SPFL debut this afternoon Mick Kennedy admits East Kilbride are targeting back-to-back league titles as they prepare to make their big SPFL debut today. The Lowland League champions will make their League Two bow after winning promotion through the play-offs last season. And K-Park is brimming with anticipation ahead of an historic clash at home to Spartans. Kilby are the bookies' favourites to take the crown in their first season in the professional ranks and while Kennedy doesn't agree with that tag, he believes he has the squad to earn successive titles. He said: 'There is massive expectation on us this season. We are the odds-on favourites with the bookies, but I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing. 'Expectations are massive within the club as well and optimism has grown, but that's what success does. 'We won't shy away from that. We will go into the league campaign very respectful of our rivals, but we want to go in there and compete, and ultimately win the league. 'That is our aspiration but we are all aware how difficult that will be. I think the club and the board would be happy if we just go and establish ourselves as a League Two club, but I don't think like that. 'My aspiration is to win the league and if that is putting extra pressure on myself and the players, then so be it. 'I think we have a really strong squad with lots of experience, and players who have won leagues before, so we are in a really strong place. I'm not so sure we should be favourites, but I think we should have a desire to go and win it.' Kennedy added: 'We are really looking forward to it and there is a massive buzz around the place. 'The supporters have been remarkable in terms of backing. The fan base has grown remarkably in such a short space of time. 'This month we took 100 fans up to Elgin and I can remember when I first took over that we were lucky to get 100 at a home game. 'Now we are selling out home games and getting good crowds, so I am delighted with that.' EK face a Spartans side who have made the same journey through the Lowland League in 2023, but who have now become an established SPFL side, finishing fifth last term and just missing out on the League One play-offs. Long-serving gaffer Dougie Samuel was a thorn in Kilby's side many a time when the teams battled it out in the fifth tier, and Kennedy expects a tough test. On his opponents, he said: 'Dougie has them very well-organised, really fit. I watched them against Falkirk [a 4-0 loss]on Saturday and they are really good on the break. I think they will let us have loads of the ball on Saturday and try to catch us on the transition, so I think that's what we can expect. 'I am not good at keeping clean sheets so I am sure we'll need to score at least a couple of goals or we'll be in bother. I don't think anyone will be recruiting me as a defensive coach! 'It will be a difficult game but it is the first game in the professional leagues for the club so you want to make it a big, historical moment. We will certainly be trying to win the game.' Kilby go into the clash missing a number of key players. New striker Ouzy See requires an operation on a knee injury and will be out long-term, while striker Cami Elliott has been ruled out with an Achilles problem. Defenders Jamie Hamilton and Jordan McGregor are also struggling.

Scottish League One side sign Celtic defender on loan
The 20-year-old central defender joins the Scottish League One side on loan for the season. Robertson, regularly playing for Celtic's B side last season, has made 28 appearances in the Lowland League and seven in the UEFA Youth League. He told "I'm excited with this move, the club has big ambitions of where they want to be. Read more: "It's been a quick turnaround; I spoke to the gaffer who was great with me, so I'm looking forward to getting started." Robertson could debut for Inverness against Kelty Hearts tomorrow. Boss Scott Kellacher said: "We're over the moon to get Mitchell in, he'll be a massive addition for us. "He gives us that bit of strength in depth in the centre-back position." Robertson has previously won the Scottish Youth Cup and Glasgow Cup with Celtic.
