KUALA LUMPUR: Herry IP believes in tough training but the Indonesian coaching legend doesn't mind letting his players take a short break.
ith the hectic second half of the World Tour about to start in a fortnight, Herry said that the one-day getaway to Genting Highlands on Friday had rejuvenated the entire team.
World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun gave the team a treat following their success in winning three World Tour titles recently.
"The short break away from the city is a good way to relax and rejuvenate," said Herry who also went to Genting with his assistant Muhhamad Miftakh.
"Just a dinner and the seniors were motivating the younger pairs. It was good to see them appreciating each other. Such breaks once in a while make them fresh and it also brings them closer.

Iskandar joins BAM as singles coach
KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia's search for a national singles coach is over. Former national shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin will take up the post from Oct 1. BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed today the appointment of Iskandar, who is currently Ireland's head coach. "We have a new coach, Iskandar, to support the singles team. He will be returning from Ireland and will join us on Oct 1," said Tengku Zafrul. Iskandar, 34, who was the 2009 World Junior Championships runner-up and a 2016 Thomas Cup team member, first joined Ireland as a sparring partner in September, 2021 while still active on the World Tour. However, the Kuala Lumpur-born Iskandar decided to retire and became Ireland's national coach in the same year. Ireland was also impressed with his services and signed a contract with him until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Iskandar, whose work had been commended by national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen, will fill the spot left vacant by Indonesian Jeffer Rosobin in February. BAM secretary Datuk Kenny Goh said Iskandar will guide the Ireland squad for the World Championships in August before moving back to Malaysia. Earlier, BAM also had Chong Wei Feng on their radar but the former Sea Games champion had decided to continue focusing on his private academies in the Klang Valley.

Iskandar Zulkarnain to return as BAM singles coach
KUALA LUMPUR: Former shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin will join the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as singles coach from Oct 1. BAM managed to persuade Iskandar to leave his current position as Ireland coach. "We have appointed Iskandar to strengthen our singles coaching team. He will join on Oct 1," said BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, adding that singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen would decide if Iskandar would guide the women's or men's singles. BAM had been on the lookout for a replacement for women's singles coach Jeffer Rosobin after the Indonesian resigned at the end of February. The 33-year-old Iskandar, who started coaching in Ireland four years ago, has been instrumental in the rise of men's singles player Nhat Nguyen, who is now ranked No. 31 in the world, and has helped elevate the profile of Irish badminton. Under his guidance, Ireland qualified two players for the Paris Olympics last August, namely Nguyen and women's singles shuttler Rachael Darragh, marking a major milestone for the country.

Highly-rated Rayyan shines for Indonesia's BTR
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian teenager Muhd Ar-Rayyan Uraymartin played a key role in helping Indonesian side Bigetron Alpha (BTR) secure third place at the PUBG Mobile Hong Kong Invitational (PMHI) on Sunday (June 29). The podium finish saw the 16-year-old from Kuching, Sarawak, and his teammates walk away with HK$300,000 (RM162,000) in prize money. BTR accumulated 140 points across 21 Games played over three days of intense competition at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong. China's Weibo Gaming topped the standings with 163 points, while Brazil's Influence Rage finished second on 158 points. Malaysian outfit Alliance staged a commendable comeback on the final day, climbing from 15th to ninth in the overall standings. They closed the campaign with 116 points, bolstered by a victory in Round 19. Rayyan's rise has been nothing short of meteoric. He made his competitive debut at the PUBG Mobile National Championship (PMNC) Summer in May, where he was named the final stage's Most Valuable Player after recording 46 eliminations and dealing 6,329 damage. Although his team, DX NSZ, failed to qualify for the PUBG Mobile Super League (PMSL) SEA Summer, Rayyan's performance caught the attention of several top-tier organisations. While many expected him to sign with Malaysian heavyweights SEM9 or Alliance, it was Indonesian giants BTR who secured his signature ahead of the PMSL SEA Summer in Jakarta two weeks ago. Rayyan showed flashes of brilliance during the tournament, but BTR struggled overall, finishing 13th out of 16 teams in the Grand Finals on home soil. Their resurgence in Hong Kong, however, suggests promising signs ahead of the Fall season, scheduled to begin in two months.
