Puri Rath Yatra: Odisha govt bans non-servitors from climbing chariots, mobile phones
State Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said on Sunday stringent legal action, including arrests, will be taken against any non-servitor found climbing the chariots during the Yatra.
Harichandan also asserted that use of mobile phones on the chariots will be strictly prohibited.
"No non-servitor will be allowed to climb the chariots. If any such person is found on the chariot, strong action including arrest will be taken. Also, servitors will not be allowed to carry mobile phones onto the chariots," the minister told reporters.
To ensure the timely completion of rituals and maintain discipline during the 'Pahandi Bije' (the ceremonial procession) of the deities, the government has requested a list of servitors designated to perform rituals on Rath Yatra day (June 27).
"The final list will be enforced strictly," the minister said.
To review the security measures for the Rath Yatra, Odisha DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania held a meeting in Bhubaneswar.
The road connecting Uttara Square near Bhubaneswar to Puri will be under CCTV surveillance, and efforts are underway to install CCTV cameras along the Puri-Konark road as well, the DGP said.
"AI-enabled CCTV cameras are being installed at key locations in Puri for real-time monitoring," he added.
Traffic advisories will also be issued from the control room to guide pilgrims and visitors.
Besides, a mobile app has been developed through which people will get information about the route through which they will have the convenience to visit Puri during the festival and park their vehicles, he informed.
Along with police personnel, Rapid Action Force, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and specialised agencies will be deployed in Puri for the festival, he said, adding: "We have requested the authorities concerned for deployment of central forces."
State Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja visited Puri on Sunday and took stock of the construction of chariots.
"Chariot construction is progressing as per schedule, and I am confident that it will be completed on time," he told reporters.

He said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are welcoming the devotees with 'open hearts'. LG Sinha apprised the reporters about the efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the Shrine Board in expanding their services for devotees. 'More than 20,000 devotees had 'darshan' of Baba Amarnath so far. They are coming from different parts of the country. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are welcoming them with an open heart. J-K administration, the government and the Shrine board have expanded their services to the people, and ONGC, under their CSR initiative, has built Yatri Niwas to help the devotees,' Sinha told reporters here. LG Manoj Sinha inaugurated the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board Yatri Niwas in Baltal, Ganderbal district, and flagged off around 6,000 devotees for the Amarnath Yatra, marking the beginning of the pilgrimage. J-K LG Manoj Sinha lauded the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board for making excellent facilities for the Yatra. 'Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces have also maintained tight security. Devotees from all over the country are here. The enthusiasm is very high. The devotees of Bholenath have neglected all the terror attacks and have reached in huge numbers. BJD seeks judicial probe into Puri stampede; bid to politicise tragedy: BJP
Bhubaneswar: BJD on Friday sought a judicial probe into the June 29 stampede outside Gundicha Temple in Puri that resulted in the death of three devotees, drawing fire from BJP for trying to politicise the tragedy. "It is deeply distressing to see the poor management of Rath Yatra. A series of grave incidents, including the misuse of cordon passes, traffic mismanagement, faulty crowd control measures and fatal stampede deeply hurt the sentiments of devotees across the globe," former minister Debi Prasad Mishra said. Pratap Jena, another former minister, criticised the govt's administrative investigation, saying, "We believe this administrative inquiry is grossly inadequate. We humbly urge the immediate initiation of a judicial inquiry, monitored by a sitting judge of Orissa high court to ensure full accountability and justice for the victims." Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the govt had promptly intervened and has taken disciplinary action against those responsible. "The administrative inquiry is under way by the development commissioner. BJD has stooped low to elicit cheap political mileage from the tragic incident. Mismanagement in temple related matters was at the worst during the BJD govt's tenure," Harichandan said. In a related development, the govt has requested public assistance in sharing information and evidence regarding the Puri stampede by July 20. Through a public notice, the state planning and convergence department requested people to share details, video footage or other materials for a thorough investigation.
