
Two UnIPSAS students die in Jalan Gambang crash

KUANTAN - Two Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UnIPSAS) students were killed, while two healthcare staff were injured in an accident involving a motorcycle and an ambulance at a traffic light intersection near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Paya Besar, Jalan Gambang, this morning.
Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the incident occurred at about 11 am when the ambulance, which was transporting a patient, was travelling from Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) towards Bukit Rangin.
"As the van was making a right turn at the traffic light intersection with its siren on, a motorcycle approaching from the direction of Gambang collided with it,' he said in a statement today.
The motorcyclist, Muhammad Zuhair Rifqi Abdul Jalil, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his pillion rider, Muhammad Firdaus Mohamad Zamri, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the HTAA Red Zone.
The 49-year-old ambulance driver and his 43-year-old assistant were also injured and are currently receiving further treatment at the hospital, he added.
Mohd Adli said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Meanwhile, UnIPSAS, in a Facebook post, extended its condolences to the families of the two students and prayed that their souls would be blessed and placed among the righteous.
"The late Muhammad Zuhair Rifqi and Muhammad Firdaus were individuals of noble character who loved religious knowledge. Both were former students of Al-Irsyad Islamic Secondary School up to Form 3 and had successfully memorised all 30 juz of the Quran,' the university said.
The university added that the two students' passion for deepening their understanding of the Quran continued through their respective fields of study - a Diploma in Quran and Sunnah Studies and a Bachelor of Syariah with Judicial Administration (Honours). - BERNAMA

MUAR: A badminton coach who allegedly caused a fatal crash that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl in May was charged at the Magistrate's Court here today. Ong Kai Wei, 26, claimed trial after the charge was read before Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar. He is accused of recklessly driving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that collided with a car carrying a family of three, resulting in the death of two-year-old Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddi. Ong was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for not less than five years, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amieerah Alludeen prosecuted, while Ong was represented by lawyer Siti Nurashikin Fuaddin. The court allowed bail at RM5,000 and fixed Aug 20 for mention and document submission. The court also ordered Ong's driving licence suspended pending the outcome of the case. In the crash, Ayesha Sofea succumbed to her injuries after two days in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital. The impact had forced the family's car off the highway and into a guardrail after being struck by the MPV.

Driver charged with reckless driving after jogger injured in crash
TAWAU: A pickup truck driver claimed trial at the magistrate's court here today to five charges, including injuring a male teacher who was jogging by the roadside last month. Mohd Hikmal Bolong, 29, pleaded not guilty after all the charges were read out before magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum. He was charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with driving recklessly and causing an accident involving the 33-year-old victim at Batu 3, Jalan Apas, at about 3.55am on June 7. As a result of the crash, the teacher sustained serious injuries, including mild traumatic brain injury with intracranial bleeding, a laceration to the back of the head, liver injury, fractured ribs, and severe wounds to his right leg. The accused also faces four additional charges under Sections 52(1), 52(2), 15(1)(a), and 90(1) of the same Act. Prosecuting officer Assistant Superintendent Joan Lee, from the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division at the Tawau district police headquarters, proposed bail of RM6,500 with two local sureties based in Tawau and Kunak. The court fixed Aug 20 for mention and submission of documents.

Man killed after car veers off road in Skudai
JOHOR BARU: A man was killed in a road accident along Km2.5 of Jalan Skudai near Pantai Lido on Monday morning after his vehicle veered off the road and crashed. Johor Baru South district police chief ACP Raub Selamat said the 29-year-old local was driving a Proton Inspira from the city centre towards Skudai when he reportedly lost control of the car. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle struck a road divider and a streetlight on the left side of the road before skidding onto the slip road of the Inner Ring Road," he said in a statement on Monday. The impact caused the driver to be trapped inside the vehicle. He suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Sultanah Aminah Hospital. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Raub urged anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward and assist police by contacting the Johor Baru South district traffic police station or the investigating officer, Insp Mohd Zulpaka Bambo, at 014-8861791. He also reminded motorists to drive carefully and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to prevent accidents.
