Uncle Stalin plays family referee as Maran brothers clash over Sun TV shares?

India Today2 days ago
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is believed to have intervened in the ongoing dispute between DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran and his elder brother Kalanidhi Maran, the chairman and managing director of Sun TV Network. According to sources, the Chief Minister urged both brothers to resolve their differences amicably in the interest of the family. There has been no official confirmation from either Dayanidhi or Kalanidhi Maran regarding the involvement by the Chief Minister – who is also their uncle – on the current status of the dispute.advertisementEfforts to mend the rift follow Dayanidhi Maran's move last month to issue a legal notice to his elder brother, sister-in-law, and six others. The notice objected to certain share transactions of the Sun TV Network dating back to 2003.
According to the notice, Dayanidhi Maran has alleged criminal breach of trust and cheating, stating that on September 15, 2003, Kalanidhi Maran unlawfully allotted 12 lakh shares of Sun TV Network Ltd. to himself without proper valuation, fair consideration, or consent from existing shareholders. The notice termed the transaction illegal and a betrayal of shareholder rights. It further claimed that approximately Rs 8,500 crore had been invested in various domestic and international Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) funds and mutual funds using undisclosed resources. These investments, the notice alleged, were made without authorisation or disclosure, with evidence drawn from savings account records.Dayanidhi Maran also contended that a red herring prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), National Stock Exchange (NSE), and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was misleading and based on fraudulent documentation, allegedly in collusion with lead managers to facilitate the public listing of the company. He has demanded that the company's shareholding be restored to its original structure as of 2003 and that all dividends, assets, and monetary benefits allegedly misappropriated be returned. The legal notice warned that failure to comply would result in appropriate civil, criminal, regulatory, and enforcement proceedings. In response, Sun TV Network Ltd. issued a clarification through a regulatory filing with the BSE on June 20. The company described the allegations as speculative, defamatory, and unsupported by facts or law. 'The statements allegedly made in the articles are incorrect, misleading, speculative, defamatory and not supported by facts or law. We wish to inform that all acts have been done in accordance with legal obligations and the same had been duly vetted by concerned intermediaries before the public issue of the company,' it said.Sun TV further noted that the matter dates back 22 years, to a time when the company was a closely held private limited entity, and insisted the dispute had no impact on its operations. 'The matters alleged in the articles do not have any bearing on the business of the company or its day-to-day functioning and, being the family matter of the promoter, are purely personal in nature,' the statement read.- Ends

Thane Man Gets 10 Years Jail For Raping Teen Sister

Thane: A court in Maharashtra's Thane district sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for threatening and raping his 15-year-old sister on multiple occasions. Additional sessions judge P R Ashturkar of Kalyan court found the 32-year-old accused guilty of charges under sections 376(2) (rape) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code for the offence that took place in 2015. A copy of the order passed on July 2 was made available on Friday. The judge also fined the accused a sum of Rs 5,000 and ordered the same to be paid to the victim as compensation. Special public prosecutor Kadambini Khandagale informed the court that the accused, a labourer from Dombivli, sexually assaulted his minor sister on two occasions in August and September 20. The teen girl was living with the accused and her other brother in a rented accommodation at the time. The victim, after the second assault, sought help from a friend whose parents encouraged her to file a police complaint, leading to the registration of the FIR on September 22, 2015. Judge Ashturkar rejected the defence's argument that the girl had fabricated the story about the assault and pointed out that the medical evidence clearly showed the commission of sexual assault, and the girl's oral testimony corroborated the findings. The judge further emphasised the victim's vulnerability and the unique circumstances of the crime. "She, being a younger sister, must not be in a position to rescue herself. There was trauma from previous similar sexual assault too. Last but not least, there is no reason for a sister to depose false against her real brother, that too making such wild allegations," the court said.

DMK govt's flagship 'Kalaignar Kanavu Illam' scheme nears 1 lakh homes milestone

The Kalaignar Kanavu Illam (KKI), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government's flagship rural housing scheme, is set to reach a major milestone, the completion of one lakh houses for the rural poor, within the next few weeks. As of now, a total of 81,811 houses have been fully completed under the scheme. An additional 18,071 homes have reached the roofing stage, while construction is underway on 118 others, which are expected to reach the roofing stage by July 20. Launched during the 2024–25 financial year, the KKI scheme aims to build one lakh houses annually for economically weaker sections in rural areas. The state government spent over Rs 3,039 crore for the scheme's implementation in its inaugural year. Progress continues into the current financial year as well. So far, 24 houses have been completed. Foundation and basement work has been completed for more than 90,000 houses, and 39,726 of them have progressed to at least the lintel stage. An additional Rs 673 crore has been spent so far this year to support construction activity. Each house built under the KKI scheme will have a minimum plinth area of 360 square feet, which includes a kitchen. Of this, at least 300 square feet will be built using reinforced cement concrete (RCC), ensuring durability. The cost of constructing each unit is Rs 3.5 lakh, which includes contributions from central schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Through MGNREGS, each house accounts for 90 person-days of employment, while an additional 10 person-days are earmarked for the construction of an Individual Household Latrine (IHHL), supported under Swachh Bharat (Grameen) at a cost of Rs 12,000. A key requirement for eligibility is that beneficiaries must possess a land patta in their name. However, in cases involving landless yet eligible individuals, District Collectors have been authorised to issue pattas, thereby enabling their inclusion in the scheme. With rapid progress and committed funding, the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam scheme stands as a symbol of the Tamil Nadu government's continued focus on improving rural housing and uplifting the living conditions of the underprivileged.
