Charles Strouse, Broadway composer of Annie and Bye Bye Birdie, dies aged 96
In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Strouse wrote more than a dozen Broadway musicals, as well as film scores and the song Those Were The Days, the theme song for the sitcom All In The Family.
Strouse turned out such popular – and catchy – show tunes as Tomorrow, the optimistic anthem from Annie, and the equally cheerful Put On A Happy Face from Bye Bye Birdie, his first Broadway success.
'I work every day. Activity – it's a life force,' the New York-born composer told The Associated Press during an interview on the eve of his 80th birthday in 2008.
'When you enjoy doing what you're doing, which I do very much, I have something to get up for.'
Deep into his 90s, he was visiting tours of his shows and meeting casts.
Jenn Thompson, who appeared in the first Annie as Pepper and directed a touring version of Annie in 2024, recalled Strouse coming to auditions and shedding a tear when a young girl sang Tomorrow.
'He was tearing up and he put his hand on mine,' she recalled.
'And he leaned in to me and very quietly said, 'That was you. That used to be you.' And I thought I would die. I thought my heart would drop out of my shoes.'
She added: 'He's so gorgeously generous and kind. He has always been that way.'

EastEnders' Natalie Cassidy 'bricking it' as she admits weakness ahead of new TV show
Former EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy, whose character Sonia Fowler left Walford in April, is among the contestants on the new series of Cooking with the Stars Former EastEnders cast member Natalie Cassidy has been "bricking it" over her latest TV project, which is scheduled to launch later this weekend. The actor has teased that she pushed herself out of her comfort zone for the experience. Natalie, 42, announced earlier that year that she would be leaving the BBC soap opera. Her character Sonia Fowler, who first appeared in 1993, then left Walford in scenes that aired back in April, with her seen embarking on a new life abroad with her two children and her sister Bianca Jackson. Following her departure, it was revealed that Natalie will appear on the new series of ITV 's Cooking with the Stars and she's spoken about feeling nervous ahead of the launch. It comes after Channel 4 breaks silence after Gogglebox couple suddenly dumped from show. Natalie, who has been mentored by professional chef Tony Singh for the show, said that she "loves" cooking at home. The actor however spoke to WhatToWatch recently about how the experience differed from that. She recalled having used vegetable stock instead of vegetable oil while practising at home. Natalie continued by telling the outlet: "Usually I'm cooking with a glass of wine with the radio on, leisurely doing a bit of washing and talking to the kids, but this is a completely different ball game." Natalie said: "You have a recipe and you don't have any time to think about it at all." Teasing over one of Sonia's job on EastEnders, she said: "This is not the cafe on Albert Square, I need to produce high-end grub and I'm bricking it!" She also shared that she signed up for the show to expand her culinary abilities, revealing that her "staples" include roast dinners and spaghetti. Natalie said they are "good basics" but wanted to learn more about herbs, spices and different cultures through the competition show. The former soap star said that she wanted to "impress" her two children in the kitchen. Natalie teased that she also hoped to learn where the chefs "go to eat," saying that she wants to get a list of restaurants and "hidden gems". Whilst speaking to the outlet, Natalie revealed her strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the competition element of Cooking with the Stars. The show sees celebrities go head-to-head in the kitchen before being judged. Natalie said that being "organised" is among her strengths. She shared her dislike for "lateness," adding that she's "very aware of time" which she hoped would prove beneficial on the show when it comes to timings over her cooking. She then admitted that her weakness is "the chopping side of things". Natalie told the outlet that loved ones will often offer to take over chopping items if next to her in the kitchen because the actor is an "Awkward Annie".

Striking students from Stage Skool in Motherwell set to wow audiences at Edinburgh Fringe Festival
This year they will be performing a production of Disney's Newsies Jr Performing arts students from a theatre group in North Lanarkshire are set to thrill audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It's a busy week for the young people from Stage Skool in Motherwell who will take to the stage at The Space, Grand Theatre in Edinburgh next week for morning shows from Monday to Saturday next week. The performing arts group has bases in Motherwell and Bathgate for those aged from eight to 16 years old, and students from both come together over the summer for Stage Skool Live. The intensive theatre program offers budding young stars the chance to work with professional directors, choreographers, and musical coaches to put on a full-scale production at one of the world's most exciting cultural events. This year they will be performing a production of Disney's Newsies Jr, a stage adaptation of the movie and Broadway musical based on the story of newsboys, young newspaper sellers who went on strike in New York in 1899. It's the third year running that Stage Skool Live has wowed audiences at the Fringe with Disney-related productions, with Frozen Jr in 2023 and Finding Nemo Jr last year proving a hit with audiences. The students in North Lanarkshire haven't had much time to feel nervous about the shows as they had another production to worry about with two performances of a teenage version of Six, a West End musical about the wives of Henry VIII, at South Dalziel Historic Building in Motherwell this week. Stage Skool was launched over a decade ago in West Lothian by owner Lindsay MacGregor, with the Motherwell branch of the group starting up six years ago. Stephen Dillon manages the Lanarkshire Stage Skool but works creatively across both bases. He's been working hard with the youngsters during the school summer holidays to ensure they are on top form. Stage Skool owner Lindsay MacGregor, said: 'We have two bases in Motherwell and Bathgate and we come together over the summer and collaborate. This year we have two productions. 'For the Fringe production we merge and have the kids from Lanarkshire and West Lothian working together. They will be performing from Monday to Saturday. 'Frozen totally sold out the first year and we moved to a bigger venue last year. It's amazing for our kids, who all come from different backgrounds. We had some of them over performing in Paris in July. 'Some of them have came back and went straight into rehearsals, they literally give up their whole summer holidays and dedicate it to performing arts. 'Stage Skool Live isn't just about putting on a show — it's about giving young people the tools, confidence, and stage to tell stories that matter. It's about growth, teamwork, and the thrill of live performance.' Stage Skool's Disney's Newsies Jr is a 60-minute show and is on at the Fringe from on Monday, August 4 to Saturday, August 9. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
