Secret Dorset: Family links twin statues cast 100 years apart

BBC News07-06-2025
Every day, in London's Piccadilly Circus, thousands of people pass a world-famous statue of a winged god, toppling forward after firing an arrow from his bow.Although widely known as Eros, the statue, which tops the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, actually represents Anteros - Eros's brother in Greek mythology. It was erected in 1893 to commemorate the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, a politician credited with improving the lives of Victorian children.About 100 miles (161km) away, at the family's estate in Dorset, an identical - but much lesser known - Anteros points back towards its likeness in London.
Radio Solent's Steve Harris went to St Giles House in Wimborne to see it and find out more about its origins.
"It's mistaken for Eros because he's a winged god with an arrow, but Eros is representing love and passion and romance," said Nick Ashley-Cooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury."Aphrodite realised he was uncontrolled and wild so Anteros, who was Eros's brother, was the balancing force."It's a really beautiful statue."Sculptor Sir Alfred Gilbert was commissioned to create the statue in honour of Lord Shaftesbury's Victorian ancestor, who was known for his work to restrict child labour and replace it with school. The original statue has been removed multiple times for repairs and the entire fountain has even been repositioned.
Metallurgist Simon Clarke, from Eastleigh in Hampshire, was involved in its restoration in the 1990s, when it was fractured by a football fan swinging on its leg.He said: "It was the first major aluminium sculpture back in the 1890s so it's quite unusual."When Gilbert was commissioned to produce the sculpture, aluminium could not be mass produced. It was like a semi-precious metal."Gilbert decided he wanted a light statue - all the Victorian statues around London were dark, cast in bronze or iron. "He wanted something that would stand out."
In the 1980s, the Fine Art Society created a set of 10 replicas of Anteros."This is number 10," said Lord Shaftesbury at the family's Dorset estate."There was no assumption that one would come here. "At that time, St Giles was in a period of abandonment and falling down."Someone involved knew this one needed a home so we were put in touch. "To have such a proud family memorial was an amazing opportunity."

Roger Daltrey accuses Zak Starkey of ‘character assassination'

Roger Daltrey, the frontman of The Who, says that comments made by axed drummer Zak Starkey after leaving the band were "incredibly upsetting" and a "character assassination". Starkey, the son of Ringo Starr, was dismissed from the band twice, with conflicting accounts regarding the reasons for his departure, including a disputed onstage error. Daltrey said that the dispute stemmed from issues with electronic drum sound affecting his in-ear monitors, not a direct criticism of Starkey's playing. Daltrey said that he and Pete Townshend are the core of The Who, viewing other members as "session players". Starkey, who was replaced by Scott Devours, has said that The Who is unpredictable and has an "addiction to friction".

Tom Hiddleston's fiancée sets record straight on wedding claims and reveals ‘toxic paragraphs' from family members

THE MARVELS star Zawe Ashton has set the record straight amid rumours she's secretly married long-time love Tom Hiddleston. The famous couple have largely kept their relationship out of the public eye, going public for the first time in 2021 after a rumoured two years of dating. 5 5 It's known the pair got engaged in 2022, the same year they welcomed their first child together – and it was confirmed earlier this year they were expecting their second. When the announcement noted Tom as Zawe's 'husband', rumours started circulating that they had secretly tied the knot. This week, Zawe joined longtime pal Miquita Oliver on her Miss Me? podcast, clearing up the speculation – and revealing even family members had believed it, sending her upsetting messages in the process after 'not being invited'. She told Miquita: 'We've been engaged for a long time. There are … I think there have been publications that have named us husband and wife already.' 'Those text messages were very … there's some toxic paragraphs that were thrown my way!,' she added. 'Like 'uh, okay, no invite? Whatever.' It's like, no, no, no. It didn't happen! We didn't do it in secret. We haven't eloped.' Despite the pair not making it official, Zawe did note that the pair do call each other husband and wife, which may have been where the confusion came from. She added: 'It's just a semantics thing. I think at some point you're like 'girlfriend, boyfriend' … with a kid and another one on the way? Does that feel right?' Zawe – who first shot to fame on Channel 4 sitcom Fresh Meat in the early 2000s – added that for some reason it 'p***ed off married couples' that they call each other husband and wife without actually getting married. Tom and Zawe have been running in similar social circles throughout their career, and were first photographed at a friendly event in 2018 celebrating the career of Harold Pinter. Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton discuss their roles in hit Harold Pinter play Betrayal Shortly after, the pair were cast alongside each other in a play by the same famed playwright, Betrayal, portraying husband and wife Robert and Emma. After a West End run in 2019, the show was transferred to Broadway, with the pair reprising their roles – during that time, it was noted they had got close. They finally went public with their first official outing as a couple at the Tony Awards in 2021. Since then, Zawe joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The Marvels' villain Dar-Benn. Tom famously plays Loki within the same film world, though their characters have never crossed on screen. 5 5 5
