Wisconsin football recruiting assistant leaves for position with NFL team

USA Today20 hours ago
Wisconsin football Associate Director of Player Personnel Zach Zilm Jr. announced on X on Sunday that he is leaving for a position with the Las Vegas Raiders. After nearly 30 months with the Badgers' recruiting staff, he'll be joining the Raiders as a player personnel assistant.
"I'm incredibly grateful and proud to share that I've accepted a player personnel position with the Las Vegas Raiders!" Zilm posted on X. "Wisconsin football staff — I can't put into words how appreciative I am for the opportunity to represent the motion W for the last 2 1/2 years. You took a chance on a hometown kid with nothing but a dollar and a dream! I will forever be thankful. As always, OnWisconsin."
According to his LinkedIn, Zilm originally joined the Badgers as a player personnel intern in February 2023. He was then promoted to a player personnel analyst in April 2023, then to the program's assistant director of player personnel in March 2024. He was a part of a Wisconsin recruiting staff that delivered top-25 classes in both the 2024 and 2025 cycles.
Zilm is not the only Wisconsin recruiting staffer to move elsewhere over the last six months -- general manager Max Stienecker left for the same position at USC in February. Notably, he and the Trojans currently sit atop the national recruiting rankings for the class of 2026 with 31 total commitments (21 blue-chip, one five-star). Wisconsin filled the general manager vacancy by promoting Deputy Athletic Director Marcus Sedberry, with Pat Lambert also taking a larger role atop the recruiting department.
Wisconsin's class of 2026 currently ranks No. 58 nationally with 14 commitments. It took a significant rankings slide after Zachary Taylor's recent decommitment.

DT Christian Wilkins still sidelined to begin Raiders training camp

More bad news for Christian Wilkins. The big defensive tackle will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, after at one time looking like he would be ready long before now. Wilkins is expected to be a big part of the Raiders defense this season. He suffered a jones fracture in his foot early last season that sent him to injured reserve. He was expected to be back and ready for the offseason program in April, but suffered a setback that had him miss all of OTA's in May and minicamp in June, but the hope was he would be back by training camp. The longer this lingers, the more concerning it becomes. "This has been a difficult recovery," head coach Pete Carroll said of Wilkins' injury back in May. "And he's done everything he needs to do. He's been here every day, he's here early, working hard. We're still working it. And he's not ready to get back out there. We're in the midst of a long challenging process. Fortunately there's a lot of time and we're going to take every bit of it. We've tried to be really diligent about the way we work and the way we wanted it and all that. He's been on board the whole time. But it has been challenging." The entire team reports to training camp on Tuesday and begins practicing on Wednesday. They will once again do so without one of their defensive stars. And who knows when he will join them.

7 Philadelphia Eagles on the roster bubble entering training camp

With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Eagles who are squarely on the roster bubble. The Eagles have a dominant roster, with ten players landing in the top ten rankings from ESPN's positional poll. Philadelphia has few holes on the roster, and even less opportunity for an under-the-radar or veteran player to steal a job or cause a surprise cut. In five days, they'll return to the NovaCare Complex entirely motivated after an offseason of slights and trash talk from looming opponents. With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Eagles who are squarely on the roster bubble. RB AJ Dillon Dillon, a 27-year-old running back, is returning to the field after missing the 2024 season due to a neck injury. The Eagles are hoping Dillon can replicate the success he had in Green Bay, where he amassed significant scrimmage yards between 2021 and 2023, but he's only under contract for $1,197,500. WR Terrace Marshall The former LSU star, still only 24, was once a second-round pick in 2021 but has had a disappointing NFL career. Marshall's best season came in 2022, when he had 28 catches for 490 yards and one score with the Panthers. Last season with the Raiders, Marshall had just three catches for 41 yards and offers intriguing athleticism as a long shot. TE Harrison Bryant Philadelphia has Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra as the top two tight ends, and Bryant will compete with Kylen Granson for a roster spot. Bryant finishes his 2024 campaign with nine receptions for 86 yards on 12 targets across 13 games with the Raiders, primarily providing depth at tight end behind All-Pro rookie Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer. OL Kenyon Green Acquired in a trade for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Green was the No. 15 overall pick out of Texas A&M back in 2022. Green missed all of 2023 with a shoulder injury, and before suffering another shoulder issue last October, he led all guards in pressures allowed (36). He ranked third in quick pressures allowed (14), per NFL Next Gen Stats. OLB Patrick Johnson More of a pass rusher than run stopper, Johnson will compete with Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari for a roster spot. CB Eli Ricks Ricks was supposed to move up the Eagles' depth chart after a season spent watching and continuing to learn his craft. He'll compete with Adoree Jackson and Mac McWilliams for snaps. DB Lewis Cine The goal in adding Lewis Cine on January 8th was to give him a head start on the upcoming season. He's had some time in Vic Fangio's system. Now, he's expected to compete for a roster spot and hopefully live up to the 32nd overall selection the Minnesota Vikings spent on him in 2022.
