Mickey: Charity Shield can ignite Selangor's Super League campaign
Faisal, better known as Mickey, said the game on Aug 8 in Johor would be the ideal platform to build momentum and test the team's readiness before facing a demanding season.
'We've been preparing for over two months. All the players are ready to play. I think we'll go there to get a positive result,' said Faisal.
'It'll be a balanced match. In football, nothing is impossible.
'We'll give our best and leave the rest to Allah – who knows, it might be our fortune.
'And I believe this is the beginning for Selangor to go all the way this season. We'll start on the right foot.
'Regardless of the outcome, even if it doesn't go our way, we must continue our fight,' said Faisal after the launch of the publicity roadshow for The Sultan of Selangor's Cup on Sept 27 at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
Asked whether the Red Giants were prepared for a packed schedule this season involving both domestic and international competitions, Faisal stressed that it was the players' responsibility to bear that 'burden' as part of their job.
'In the past, we had just the Super League domestically. Then last year, we went to the ACL2 (AFC Champions League 2), so we got to feel the difference in terms of rest and long-distance travel.
'But this year, we've added the Shopee Cup, which is very challenging.
'Our first game will be in Buriram. We'll travel from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok and then take a five-hour bus ride to Buriram. That's not easy.
'Not all players enjoy that – long travel, one day of rest, then a game, then returning and immediately having another match,' he said.
He stressed that every player in the Selangor squad, whether in the starting eleven or on the bench, must maintain high readiness levels as the opportunity to play could come at any time, and only those truly prepared could meet the challenge. — Bernama

JDT the clear favourites again
Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: James Wong Text Size: The inclusion of Brunei's DPMM FC and the Immigration team has added new flavour to the league, but how well these two newcomers fare is anybody's guess. THE 2025-26 football season will kick off with the Charity Shield on August 8. It is a match between 11-time Super League champions JDT FC and another giant in Malaysian football, Selangor FC. It is also the first league game of the new season and a lot will be at stake for both teams. JDT FC will no doubt be the hot favourites to win the tie with their menacing line-up of heritage and naturalised players in addition to their foreign imports and local Internationals. Although I believe Selangor also known as the Red Giants have prepared well and set their sights for a good season, it will still be a very tough task for them to get a win in the season opener. ‘Gaddar' eyes capital gains in terms of progress in new chapter with KL
PETALING JAYA: Fazrul Amir Md Zaman's last stint outside Kelantan came in 2019 with the now-defunct PKNS, when he was a promising youngster trying to make his mark in the Youth and President's Cup. That opportunity did not pan out, but the experience helped shape his journey. Now, seven years later, the man fondly known as 'Gaddar' is ready to take another leap - this time with Kuala Lumpur in the Super League kicking off on Aug 8. After gradually building his reputation back home - especially during a standout 2023 season with Kelantan - Fazrul earned a move to the capital. While some initially viewed him as a potential back-up option, his lively displays in pre-season friendlies suggest he may have a bigger role on the left wing. But the 25-year-old isn't getting ahead of himself as he is well aware of the fierce competition in his position, with Argentine playmaker Manuel Hidalgo, S. Sharvin, and J. Partiban all vying for spots on the flanks. 'This is my second time playing outside the east coast, but I've been able to adapt quickly. The staff and my teammates have helped make the transition smooth,' said Fazrul. 'Competition on the wings is intense, but I consider it a positive challenge. It motivates me to raise my level. 'After four friendly matches, I feel more in tune with the team, and my form is picking up - but there's still plenty I need to improve on.' Kuala Lumpur have played four pre-season friendlies so far, drawing with Bunga Raya (0-0) and Sabah (1-1), beating Armed Forces (3-1), and losing narrowly to Indonesian side Semen Padang (0-1). They will travel to Melaka for another friendly tomorrow, with more matches scheduled before their Super League opener against Immigration at the Batu Kawan Stadium on Aug 12. Last season, Fazrul made 24 appearances in all competitions and scored two goals. 'My personal target this season is to play consistently, contribute more with goals and assists, and keep progressing. 'For the team, the aim is clear - we want to climb up the table and take KL further than before this season.' The City Boys finished sixth with 31 points last season.

Samba in his steps
PETALING JAYA: Long before new Selangor signing Kevin Deeromram became a flying wingback in South-East Asia, he was a young boy glued to the TV screen watching Real Madrid's marauding leftback Marcelo light up the Bernabeu with his Brazilian flair. 'I like Marcelo when he played for Real Madrid,' said Kevin, now 27, in his first interview after joining the Red Giants. 'He is technical and you could see how good he was in Europe. I try to play like him - being on the offensive, always trying to create chances.' It's no surprise, then, that Kevin's own game has blossomed in the same mould. Marauding leftback: Kevin Deeromram is now set to bring his high-energy style to Malaysian football after a solid eight-year stint in Thailand. A bold, attacking leftback with a forward-first mindset, Kevin is now set to bring his high-energy style to Malaysian football after a solid eight-year stint in Thailand. Kevin's rise in football, however, is somewhat a surprise as his background did not hint at a future on the pitch. 'I'm the first professional footballer in my family. 'My father was a wrestler. He put me into football, but we didn't come from a sporting world.' Born to a Thai mother and Swedish father, Kevin's multicultural roots offered him options, but his love for the game paved his path forward. He joined the Djurgardens IF academy in Sweden in 2012 before moving to Werder Bremen in 2015. A year later, he returned to Djurgardens and made his professional debut against Levski Sofia, a moment that tested every nerve. 'Imagine the fans, there were flares everywhere. ''I was literally shaking. But it made me a player. Since then, I haven't looked back.' In 2017, Kevin moved to Thailand, representing Ratchaburi and then Port, where he played from 2018-2025. He won the Thai FA Cup with Port in 2019 and also earned four senior caps for Thailand, after clinching the SEA Games gold with the U-23 team in 2017. Now, Kevin is charting a new chapter with Selangor 'I felt the time was right to spread my wings. Selangor showed interest, and I thought, 'Why not?' It's a big club with a huge fanbase and good facilities.' Adapting, he believes, won't be an issue. Having already spoken to coach Katsuhito Kinoshi and his new teammates, Kevin is itching to hit the ground running. 'I can't wait to get started. We want to win as many games as we can and try to be champions.'' If he can inspire a few young footballers, the way Marcelo once inspired him, that will be a bonus for Selangor.
