Land acquisition cost doubles, fund crunch hits ORR project amid delays

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The long-pending Outer Ring Road (ORR) project in Thiruvananthapuram connecting Vizhinjam to Navaikulam via Thekkada is facing major financial and administrative impasse as the cost of land acquisition has doubled from Rs 1,800 crore to Rs 3,800 crore. According to official sources, this estimate is valid till August and if the government fails to initiate the procedures to disburse the funds to the land owners by then, the cost will further escalate. As per the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, beneficiaries are entitled to 12 per cent annual interest on delayed payments, calculated from the date of land possession to the date of actual compensation. Initially, the estimate for land acquisition stood at around Rs 1,800 crore with the state and Centre chipping in 50 per cent, each. The project, which requires 314 hectares of land across 24 villages, has been stuck for over three years with the land owners clamouring for compensation. The recent estimates show that the cost of land acquisition has escalated more than 100 per cent, severely impacting the project. According to official sources, the land acquisition procedures took off around three years ago and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has given the revised estimates for the land acquisition as per the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act recently. 'The estimates will continue to multiply if the project doesn't take off immediately,' said an official source. Last month, after the meeting with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, PWD Minister P A Mohammad Riyas had announced that the Centre would give the final approval for the ORR project by July end. An official of the district administration said that after the meeting a team from the Centre came down to assess the situation.

Union Minister Gadkari says World War could ‘break out anytime', flays superpowers' authoritarianism

Coordination, harmony and love are vanishing due to the authoritarianism and dictatorship of superpowers and there is an atmosphere of conflict across the world, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Sunday (July 6, 2025) while citing the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Iran wars. Hailing India as the land of the Buddha giving the message of truth, non-violence and peace to the world, Mr. Gadkari emphasised the need to ascertain future policy after reviewing and deliberating on international happenings underway. Speaking at the launch of the book Beyond Borders in Nagpur, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said these conflicts are creating a situation where World War could break out "anytime". The technological advancements pertaining to war were also making it tougher to protect humanity, he asserted. "There is an atmosphere of conflict going on across the world amid the war between Israel and Iran as well as Russia and Ukraine. The situation is such that there is possibility of a World War taking place anytime in the backdrop of these two ongoing wars," Mr. Gadkari said. Mr. Gadkari said warfare dimensions have changed due to advanced technology, with increasing use of missiles and drones, which was reducing the relevance of tanks and other kind of aircraft. "Amid all this, it has become difficult to protect humanity. Often, missiles are fired on civilian settlements. This has created a serious pro`blem and there is need to discuss all these issues at a global level," the senior BJP leader said. "It won't be right to say so but (fact is) all this is slowly leading to destruction. Authoritarianism and dictatorship (adhikarwadi-hukumshahi) of the superpowers is making coordination, harmony and love vanish," he opined.

"Conflicts around world may lead to third world war": Gadkari emphasises dialogue on wars at global level

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], July 7 (ANI): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflicts across the world and said that the situation has become so grave that the tensions between the countries could potentially lead to a third world war soon. The Union Minister also highlighted that advancements in warfare technology have dramatically altered the 'dimensions of war' and said that the current situation is a serious problem that demands urgent attention and discussion at the global level. 'There is an atmosphere of conflict around the world---between Israel and Iran, as well as the war between Russia and Ukraine. The situation is such that there is a possibility of a third world war anytime in the backdrop of these wars,' said Nitin Gadkari while addressing a book launch event in Nagpur on Sunday. 'Due to the increasing technology of war, the dimensions of war have changed, and the use of missiles and drones has increased in the war, due to which the relevance of tanks and other types of aircraft is decreasing. Amidst all this, it has become difficult to protect humanity. Missiles are often fired at civilian settlements,' he said. Adding further, he said, 'This has created a serious problem, and all these issues need to be discussed at the global level. It would not be right to say this, but this path is slowly moving towards destruction.' Earlier last week, US President Donald Trump welcomed Hamas's response to a US-brokered Gaza ceasefire proposal and called it 'a positive spirit,' saying a deal could be reached by next week, The Jerusalem Post reported. The proposed 60-day ceasefire, already accepted by Israel, would see the release of 10 Israeli hostages--eight alive and two deceased--on the first day in exchange for an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners. Israel would begin withdrawing from parts of northern Gaza, and both sides would then enter talks for a permanent ceasefire. Trump said that Iran had not agreed to inspections of its nuclear program or to stop uranium enrichment. He claimed Iran's nuclear capabilities had been set back permanently but admitted Tehran could resume at another site. Efforts toward a truce accelerated after last month's 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. Qatar relaunched indirect talks, and the new proposal is reported to contain stronger US guarantees to keep Israel at the negotiating table. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday condemned the latest large-scale Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, reiterating his call for an 'immediate and unconditional' ceasefire as a critical step towards achieving a 'just, comprehensive and sustainable peace' in the region. In a post on X, the UN Chief stated that the attacks, which disrupted the power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, underscored the ongoing risks to nuclear safety, prompting the urgency of halting hostilities in line with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.
