The sun shone on our Father's Day CraftFest as dads, granddads and even great grandad's and their families gathered from around greater Durban and the mildlands for a day of family fun.
Brought to you be the Independent on Saturday and the Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market, the annual event is a celebration of everything craft, from craft beers, spirits and cocktails, to delicious artisanal foods and great music from top local bands. And we musn't forget the many crafters who sell their interesting wares.
Held at the Shongweni Market site, it is a relaxed day in the country for people from all walks of life to come together to celebrate life and community, and cherish the handmade over the mass produced. And the kids too could have fun whether on the zip line or Shongweni Express, or with face painting or in the bubble house or even with quad bikes and paintball, while the adults could dance on the lawn and take in the afternoon sun.
They snacked on lavish top burgers and hot dogs, platters of deli meats, olives and cheeses, gourmet pizza slices, fresh fish and chips, and some of the best dim sum I've tasted in Durban. Even the vegans were looked after.

Meet our June winner and finalists in the Independent on Saturday's May Pet of the Month competition. This month, it's Hail, a two-year-old, red-nosed pitbull from Shallcross who wears the crown. Hail's mum says she is the sweetest and most affectionate pup you will ever meet. "We are blessed to have her as part of our family. If you meet her, she will break every stereotype you have of the breed and make you understand how much these beautiful dogs have to offer. They are loving, loyal, intelligent and protective." Plus its Hails birthday today, so it is fitting to wish our prize winner an awesome birthday. Hail wins an exciting new prize open to all pet winners this year – an exclusive photoshoot from pet photographer Tilanie Grote worth R1 500.

Gerda Steyn taking time off in UK, but still more to come from the Smiling Assassin in 2025

TAKING TIME OFF Gerda Steyn, after a successful season winning the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons, is enjoying a summer break in the UK but is set to compete in a major race later this year, likely aiming to reclaim her South African women's marathon record at the Valencia Marathon. Picture: Sibonelo Ngcobo / Independent Newspapers Following another incredible season of road running in South Africa in which Gerda Steyn won both the Two Oceans Marathon and Comrades Marathon titles, the Smiling Assassin is finally taking some well-deserved time off. Currently spending time in what should be the warmer climbs of the UK in summer, Steyn is still coming down from the high of winning her fourth Comrades Marathon title on June 8. It was also her third consecutive title at 'The Ultimate Human Race'. Though Steyn was enjoying the warmer weather abroad, she hinted on Facebook she would still be running another major race before the year is out.
