KUCHING: Kuching City Football Club president Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman has won the Sarawak Football Association (FAS) president post uncontested at the association's Annual General Meeting today.
Fazzrudin who takes over from Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdul Rahman, will hold the position for the 2025-2027 term.
Fazzrudin, who is also the chief political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, won uncontested following the withdrawal of another candidate, Dr Mohd Shafiq Abdullah, at the last minute.
Met with reporters after the meeting, Fazzrudin said that among his main agenda as FAS president is to bring football to the grassroots level by organising the Sarawak Premier League.
He said the league would involve teams representing parts of Sarawak and it would be an annual event.
'If the quality of the league is good, then we hope it can produce more quality players who may be approached by teams in the Malaysian League or overseas leagues. We want to see football players from Sarawak being able to play at a higher level.
'I hope we can start this league by September at the latest as it may take three months,' he said.
At the same meeting, the position of FAS deputy president was also won unopposed by Datuk Hamzah Brahim.

Works on new SJKC Chung Hua Batu 11 nearing completion

Dr Sim (second left) presents the mock cheque for RM1.5 million to the school. On his right is Fazzrudin. KUCHING (July 11): The construction of the new SJKC Chung Hua Batu 11 in Matang is progressing steadily, with 60 to 70 per cent of the works completed, and full completion targeted by March next year, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. During a site visit today, Dr Sim, accompanied by chief political secretary to the Sarawak Premier Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, handed over a RM1.5 million cheque to support the school's development. With this latest contribution, the state government had allocated a total of RM4 million towards the RM7 million project. Dr Sim highlighted that the state government, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, had consistently supported Chinese schools, channelling around RM12 million annually since 2020 for school relocation and construction. 'The Premier believes Chinese schools are for all races. Of the 60,000 students enrolled in 222 Chinese primary schools across Sarawak, about 25,000 are Bumiputera,' he said. Dr Sim also said while the federal government covered the operational costs, infrastructure development was typically borne by the school's board, local representatives, and the community. 'This isn't a cheap school — it's a community-driven project. Everyone contributes, from contractors to landscape architects, which helps keep costs low,' he explained. Emphasising the importance of a strong foundation in primary education, especially for students hoping to enter Sarawak's Yayasan International Secondary School where 50 per cent of enrolments would be reserved for students from B40 (low-income) families, Dr Sim said: 'You can't expect a student who doesn't even know their ABCs to succeed in an international school, even if it's free.' He expressed appreciation to all stakeholders involved, particularly the Sarawak Federation of Chinese School Boards, and commended Fazzrudin for working closely with the school board throughout the project. Selangor FC focuses on local talent and heritage players for growth

SELANGOR Football Club (Selangor FC) remains dedicated to nurturing local football talent while also seeking heritage players abroad to strengthen its squad. State Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi stated that this hybrid approach aligns with modern football trends and enhances the club's competitiveness. Mohd Najwan explained that Selangor FC aims to balance the recruitment of heritage players with grassroots development to ensure long-term success. 'Selangor FC believes this hybrid approach can elevate the team's performance while maintaining the club's identity among Selangor's fans,' he said during the Selangor State Assembly. The discussion followed a question from Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa) regarding whether the Selangor Football Association (FAS) would follow the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) strategy in recruiting heritage players. Mohd Najwan acknowledged that heritage players from Europe could improve the squad but stressed that local talent development remains a priority. He highlighted ongoing initiatives, including coach and referee training, amateur team development, and structured state-level leagues, to bridge the gap between local and foreign players. Selangor FC, FAS, and the state government have collaborated on programmes to strengthen football development. 'These efforts ensure that the best local players receive high-quality training and exposure,' he added. The club has also formed partnerships with European and Asian clubs to provide international training opportunities for local players. – Bernama

Exco: Selangor FC committed to prioritising local talent development

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Football Club (Selangor FC) remains committed to prioritising the development of local football talent, the Selangor State Assembly was told today (July 10). State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman (Exco) Mohd Najwan Halimi said that, nonetheless, Selangor FC still need to identify and recruit heritage players playing abroad to strengthen and improve the team's performance in domestic and Asian-level football competitions. He said this hybrid approach aligns with the modernisation of the football industry both domestically and internationally, and helps enhance Selangor FC's competitiveness. "Selangor FC believes that this hybrid approach can elevate the team's competitiveness to a higher level while preserving the pride and identity of the club among the people of Selangor," he said. He was responding to a question from Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa), who asked whether the Selangor Football Association (FAS) would adopt the approach of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in recruiting national heritage players. Mohd Najwan said that recruiting quality heritage players from Europe would improve Selangor's squad, but at the same time, various initiatives and coordination efforts continue at the grassroots level to bridge the quality gap between heritage and local players. He said Selangor FC, FAS, and the state government have worked closely in implementing programmes aimed at strengthening and empowering the football development system in Selangor. "Programmes for coach, referee, and amateur team development, as well as systematic state-level football leagues across various age groups organised by FAS, have established a solid foundation for local players to develop their talents. "Selangor FC, in turn, places emphasis on talent scouting programmes and the development of elite and internationally recognised local coaches, to ensure that the best local players at each age level are identified and receive high-quality training," he said. Mohd Najwan added that Selangor FC have also established many strategic partnerships with professional football clubs in Europe and Asia, enabling local players to undergo training and gain international-level exposure in order to narrow the gap between local and foreign players. — BERNAMA
