Halifax prepares for Canada Day celebrations
From Citadel Hill to the waterfront, Canada Day preparations are well underway in Halifax, with thousands of people expected to gather across the city for live music, fireworks and a celebration that honours Mi'kmaw culture.
'There are so many events happening,' said Brynn Budden, spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Municipality. 'Some of the featured performers on stages throughout the city tomorrow include Boogie Beach, Big Canoe and many more.'
The municipality says the day's programming has been developed in close collaboration with Indigenous communities to recognize Mi'kmaw traditions and culture.
'When I tell sweat – and hopefully not any tears – a lot of work goes into this event every year,' said Budden.
This year's events include a gathering on the Halifax Waterfront, a free concert hosted by the African Nova Scotian Music Association in Dartmouth, and multiple stages featuring a wide range of musical performances in downtown Halifax. The festivities will conclude with the city's annual fireworks display over the harbour, weather permitting.
The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site will also be offering free admission on July 1, providing families and tourists a chance to explore the landmark at no cost.

Art meets skateboarding and community at Canora Courts

'I'm very passionate about community spaces,' said Pendzich at the event Saturday, adding that she is hoping to get people inspired by the world of skateboarding. 'It's amazing to see all sorts of people getting involved with skateboarding and just building a fun, welcoming community. 'I think it starts here at Canora Courts with this special skatepark.' Canora Courts is a makeshift skatepark on the tennis court at the Canora Community League in west Edmonton. The park was established in 2022 in partnership with the community league. Kai Kilkenny, a 19-year-old skater said she found out about the skatepark just a few months ago. 'It's really cool,' said Kilkenny, who has been skating since she was 12 years old. 'I like that it's DIY and that the community has put it together.' Kilkenny thought the idea for the event was a great way to bring people together and maybe inspire kids to skateboard. While Pendzich photos were on display as skateboarders performed tricks at the DIY skatepark in west Edmonton, people were also encouraged to design their own Tech Decks – mini skateboards that can be handled with your fingers. A fun foam run for a good cause: 5K Kitchener event raises money for Make-a-Wish
A fun and charitable run is making it's way across the country this summer, stopping in Kitchener for the first time. CTV's Karis Mapp explains. A fun and charitable run is making it's way across the country this summer, stopping in Kitchener for the first time. Nearly 4,000 participants took part in Saturday's 5K Foam Fest at Victoria Park. The course featured a variety of obstacles, as well as 2.5 million cubic feet of foam. 'They start and finish the race in a mountain of foam. Somewhere along the way, they get to the death drop obstacle,' explained the events operations manager Stephen Passero. ' We have slip and slides, we've got cargo net climbs. There's a little bit of something for everybody regardless of ability.' There was also live music, a kids zone and food vendors. Choosing either to run or walk, organizers say the goal is to ensure everyone has fun. 'It's not a hard core race. We don't keep time. It's for absolutely everybody age seven and up. Even those who are under the age of seven, we still have some amazing things for them to do.' All proceeds raised will support Make-A-Wish, a charity that grants wishes for children with critical illnesses.
