DIA's $15M plan for Peña Boulevard

DIA's $15M plan for Peña Boulevard

Axios18-03-2025
The public's gateway to Denver International Airport faces an existential crisis.
The big picture: DIA officials are seeking a $15 million contract to study potential redevelopment of Peña Boulevard, a roughly 11-mile roadway connecting Colorado's biggest economic driver to the city, state and region.
Driving the news: A Denver City Council committee on Wednesday will consider sending the contract to the full council after postponing a decision earlier this month.
Why it matters: Pushback from council and the public on the contract could force DIA officials to reconsider their strategy for how to safely and efficiently get people to and from a travel hub that expects its annual passenger traffic to reach 100 million by 2027.
By the numbers: Daily traffic on Peña Boulevard increased 80% between 1995 and 2023, city documents show.
Traffic isn't solely travelers: More than 40,000 airport employees commute to and from DIA, while residents in Aurora and Denver use the boulevard daily.
Context: The proposed five-year contract with Lakewood-based Peak Consulting Group would lead a National Environmental Policy Act study to evaluate next steps for Peña Boulevard.
Creating a carpool or toll lane, adding a bus-only lane or building a frontage road for local traffic are among potential options in a master plan released last year, per Denverite.
Yes, but: Some council members and transit advocates say the airport isn't adequately considering alternatives, including improving public transit to reduce car use and lower emissions.
An open letter signed by five advocacy organizations this month urged city council to vote no on the contract. At least one council members said they'd received hundreds of resident messages opposing the $15 million study plan.
What they're saying: "This is not the place to wage a war on cars," Councilmember Kevin Flynn said in support of the contract during the March 5 committee meeting.
DIA CEO Phil Washington told council members during the same meeting the study is not starting with a "predetermined" outcome, adding it could reveal alternatives.
Between the lines: DIA chose Peak Consulting Group through a bidding process that started last year, and it intends to pay for the $15 million contract from its own enterprise fund and federal transportation grants, according to city documents.

Profits drop at Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway as it writes down its Kraft Heinz investment

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Warren Buffett's company reported less than half as much profit in the second quarter as it took a $3.76 billion writedown on the value of its stake in Kraft Heinz, as that iconic food producer considers largely undoing the merger that Berkshire Hathaway helped bankroll. Berkshire said it earned $12.37 billion, or $8,601 per Class A share, during the quarter. That's down from $30.248 billion, or $21,122 per Class A share, a year ago, because it recorded a much smaller paper investment gain this year. Berkshire's earnings can swing wildly from quarter to quarter because it has to record the current value of its massive investment portfolio even though it doesn't sell most of the stocks. That's why Buffett has long recommended that investors pay more attention to Berkshire's operating earnings, which exclude those investment gains. Although last year Berkshire did surprise shareholders by selling off a huge chunk of its Apple stake which inflated the investment gains then. By that measure, Berkshire's operating earnings were only down slightly at $11.16 billion, or $7,759.58 per Class A share. That compares with $11.598 billion, or $8,072.16 per Class A share, a year ago. Most of Berkshire's myriad assortment of companies — major insurers like Geico, BNSF railroad, a group of utilities and a collection of manufacturing and retail businesses — generally performed well despite the uncertainty about the economy and President Donald Trump's tariffs. The four analysts surveyed by FactSet Research expected Berkshire to report earnings per Class A share of $7,508.10, so the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate's results were ahead of that. Berkshire owns more than 27% of Kraft Heinz' stock and, for years, it had representatives on the company's board. Buffett has said previously that he believes the company's iconic brands will do well over time, but in hindsight, he overpaid for the investment and underestimated the challenges branded foods face from retailers and the growth of private label products. This spring, Berkshire's representatives resigned from the Kraft Heinz board shortly before the company announced it is exploring strategic options that may include spinning off a large part of its portfolio of brands. Over the years since Berkshire helped Kraft buy Heinz in 2015, the company has been hurt by changing consumer tastes and a shift toward healthier options than Kraft's core collection of processed foods. Buffett's is still sitting on a massive pile of $344.1 billion in cash, although the company's reserves dipped slightly from the $347.7 billion cash it was holding at the end of the first quarter. Buffett told shareholders in May he just isn't finding any attractive deals for companies he understands. Buffett surprised shareholders at the annual meeting when he announced that he plans to give up the CEO title at the end of the year and hand over operations to Vice Chairman Greg Abel, but Buffett will remain Chairman.

Energy company launches partnership to deliver 3 massive solar projects: 'Further underscores our commitment'

Energy company launches partnership to deliver 3 massive solar projects: 'Further underscores our commitment' ElectroRoute, a Dublin-based energy trading and services company, has made three Power Purchase Agreements for solar energy projects. The deals were struck with Innova Renewables, a renewable energy asset manager, investor, and developer, according to Renewable Energy Magazine. Both companies have the shared goal of fostering a cleaner, greener world. The three solar projects will have a combined capacity of 61 megawatts. In their partnership, ElectroRoute and Innova Renewables will supply over 60,000 MWh of renewable solar electricity to the U.K. This aligns with the U.K.'s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The Office for National Statistics has reported that U.K. non-renewable emissions in 2024 were 54% lower than in 1990. As planet-warming gases like carbon dioxide pollute the air and trap heat in the atmosphere, solar energy projects like this are pivotal in offsetting the imbalance between natural energy being received from the sun and emitted from the Earth, as explained by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Where this pollution-led imbalance exists, weather patterns and overall climate are affected, harming the planet and its inhabitants. Homeowners interested in playing their role to combat air pollution while significantly lowering their personal energy bills could install rooftop solar panels, which can lower individual energy bills to $0. EnergySage enables consumers to compare quotes for free and could save $10,000 off solar installations. These savings, combined with solar energy's eco-friendly benefits, make clean energy a worthwhile investment for any community or individual. The committed roles ElectroRoute and Innova Renewables are playing in the U.K.'s fight for a clean planet will make a significant difference. Per Renewable Energy Magazine, chief commercial officer at ElectroRoute Brian Kennedy said, "This partnership reflects the trust placed in ElectroRoute's expertise in energy trading and risk management and further underscores our commitment to supporting the renewable sector with innovative and dependable trading solutions."
