Chiu just missed out on gold after clocking six minutes and 54.36 seconds in the heats during the three-day event to advance as the top overall qualifier.
In the final, he started a tight race with Uruguay's Felipe Kluver, keeping a mere half-second gap through the first 1,500 metres.

Home favourite Luca Borgonovo claimed bronze in six minutes 52.62 seconds.
This is the second time that Chiu has gotten on the podium – he took the gold medal in the same event at last year's World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland.
"Anyway, we have more good memories in Varese, Italy! Grazie mille!" he wrote on social media
"Thanks to all the coaches, therapists and supporters who put me back in one piece for this over the past half year.
"Am looking forward to the second half."

HK 'aims to boost role as Asia's events capital'

HK 'aims to boost role as Asia's events capital' Hong Kong's first-ever Brazilian festival 'Extravaganza! When Brazil Meets Hong Kong' will take place at AIA Vitality Park in Central. Photo: RTHK Financial Secretary Paul Chan said on Friday that Hong Kong is looking to strengthen its role as Asia's events capital by hosting more international events for both residents and tourists. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the city's inaugural Brazilian festival, "Extravaganza! When Brazil Meets Hong Kong," Chan emphasised the need for creativity to enhance the city's appeal. "It requires imagination, innovation and inspiration to make our city even more attractive to tourists and residents," he said. "We need more events like this one and more joint efforts by the business community, including the tourism, catering and retail sectors, to create new experiences for consumers and visitors." Chan noted that beyond concerts and major rugby fixtures, Hong Kong will host top-tier football matches, expressing a keen desire to welcome the Brazilian national team soon. Brazilian deputy consul-general Hervelter de Mattos said the national team would love to play in the SAR, and hopes to see them come in the future. He further highlighted the festival's significance, calling it a "new cultural bridge" benefiting both tourism and the local economy. "It's inevitable that business will also benefit from this situation," de Mattos said. "Most of the consuls general who were here [at the festival] are from countries that share somehow the same kind of energy. "If you see the Philippines, Thailand, Colombia, Spain and others, these are countries also with the same kind of warm culture. It's a good occasion for all of us." Festival founder and CEO Stefan Matzinger expects up to 8,000 visitors daily during the three-day celebration.

Marco Fu storms back to qualify for British Open

Marco Fu storms back to qualify for British Open Marco Fu booked his place in Cheltenham with another impressive comeback win in the qualifiers. Photo courtesy of World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association Snooker star Marco Fu on Wednesday staged another impressive comeback win in Leicester, as he maintained his dominant start to the season with a come-from-behind victory over six-time ranking event winner Stephen Maguire. Fu erased a three-frame deficit to defeat Maguire 4-3 en route to punching a ticket for the British Open, set to be held in Cheltenham in September. It was a one-sided affair in the opening stages as Maguire made breaks of 78, 54 and 51 to take commanding 3-0 lead. With his back against the wall, Fu stormed back in dominant fashion by taking four frames in a row with runs of 140, 81, 104 and 54. His 140 in the fourth frame is the highest break of the event so far. The victory comes a day after the three-time snooker ranking event winner secured his place in the Wuhan Open, after overcoming world number 16 Chris Wakelin. The 47-year-old will be the only SAR player to feature in the ranking tournament in Wuhan, set for August 24 to 30.
