Trade Arabia27-04-2025
The transformative impact of emerging technologies, particularly AI, is projected to generate an annual economic value of $11 trillion to $18 trillion, by revolutionising industries such as energy, logistics and manufacturing, according to a new report.
The report, 'Digital Innovation for a Sustainable Future,' released by Invest Qatar, the Investment Promotion Agency of Qatar, and Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, highlights the transformative role of digital technologies in advancing energy efficiency, sustainability and economic diversification.
The report explores key global trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI), smart grids, cloud computing and clean technology, offering insights into their potential to accelerate Qatar's digital transformation.
The rapid expansion of private 5G networks and hyperscale data centres is reinforcing business competitiveness, as 5G technology is projected to contribute almost $900 billion to the global economy by 2030. These advancements are reshaping energy efficiency, as smart grids, Internet of Things (IoT) and AI strengthen the resilience and sustainability of power systems.
Looking ahead, the shift toward clean technology will require a major workforce transformation, with an estimated 200 million skilled workers required globally by 2050 to support the continued expansion of sustainable energy solutions, it said.
Sheikh Ali Alwaleed Al-Thani, CEO of Invest Qatar, said: 'In Qatar, we are embracing digital innovation with a balanced approach, ensuring it aligns with our long-term sustainability goals. By integrating cutting-edge technology with responsible environmental practices, we aim to create opportunities for investors and businesses committed to drive sustainable growth. We believe that digitalisation is not just about enhancing efficiency, but also about shaping a smarter and greener future.'
Santiago Bañales, Managing Director of Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, said: 'This report offers timely insight into how digital innovation, particularly AI, is reshaping the energy landscape and accelerating the shift toward more sustainable systems. AI is driving rapid progress across the sector, from enabling smarter grid operations to optimising the use of renewable energy. Yet it also brings growing energy demands, which must be met with clean, efficient sources. At Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, we are developing AI-based solutions that not only enhance how we generate and manage energy, but also ensure that innovation is sustainable by design. Our ongoing partnership with Invest Qatar reflects a shared commitment to supporting Qatar's transition to a diversified, knowledge-based economy, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.'
Digital innovation and sustainability are at the core of Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030), focusing on transforming the country into a tech-driven, knowledge-based economy. The Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), launched last year, reinforces the country's ambition to lead in digital innovation and sustainability. This unwavering commitment is reflected in the country's strategic adoption of emerging technologies, significant investment in digital infrastructure and focus on digital skills development. These advancements have propelled the country's rise in global rankings. Qatar ranks second globally for general infrastructure (Global Innovation Index 2024) and leads the GCC in data and infrastructure (AI Readiness Index 2023).
The release of this new report marks the ongoing strategic partnership between Invest Qatar and Iberdrola, building on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in May 2022.
This agreement enabled Iberdrola to expand its world-class innovation centre dedicated to advancing the application of AI in the energy sector in Qatar and worldwide. Through this partnership, the Spanish group has expanded its Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities via the Doha-based Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, located in Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP).

Global Gateway With an investment of US$205 million, the arrival of the world's longest submarine cable places Bahrain at the centre of a digital superhighway stretching 45,000 kilometres. The cable's high-speed data capacity is set to reinforce Bahrain's position as a digital hub and significantly boost its potential to attract tech-driven investment, innovation, and high-skilled jobs. The cable landing ceremony was attended by His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, and Khalid Al Osaimi, Chief Executive Officer of stc Bahrain. Officials confirmed the ground connection process was completed in record time. Qatar Refers 13 Companies to Prosecution Over Tax Evasion

Qatar's General Tax Authority (GTA) has referred 13 companies to the Public Prosecution for alleged tax evasion totalling QR36m ($9.9m) during the first half of 2025. The GTA confirmed the referrals stem from thorough investigations conducted in collaboration with relevant government bodies. The probe uncovered major irregularities, including cases of companies intentionally concealing income to evade taxes. The measure comes as part of the GTA's commitment to the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, specifically the pursuit of financial stability through enhanced tax system efficiency and universal adherence to responsibilities by all economic actors. The 13 companies, all legally registered in Qatar, are now subject to legal proceedings under the provisions of Law No. 24 of 2018 — the country's Income Tax Law — which criminalises tax evasion and fraudulent reporting. The GTA reiterated its commitment to fair enforcement and called on all taxpayers to submit accurate and timely tax returns, warning that evasion not only harms the economy but also undermines efforts to create a sustainable and diversified financial system. Tackling tax evasion is a key pillar of Qatar's broader strategy to diversify income sources and support long-term development. By building a resilient financial system, the state aims to fund infrastructure projects, enhance investor confidence, and achieve balanced economic growth. The GTA also stressed the importance of cultivating a culture of voluntary compliance and building public trust in the tax system, to raise compliance rates and reduce the burden of enforcement over time. Qatar launches $1bn investment incentives scheme

In a strategic move to drive investment growth and accelerate economic diversification, Invest Qatar has launched a $1 billion incentives programme, aimed at strengthening Qatar's position as a leading global business hub. Unveiled at the 5th edition of Qatar Economic Forum, the programme offers a comprehensive suite of incentive packages tailored for both local and international investors. These incentives provide financial support covering up to 40% of eligible local investment expenses over five years, including business setup costs, construction, office leases, equipment and employee-related expenses. Targeting key growth sectors identified in the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), namely advanced industries, logistics, IT and digital and financial services, the incentive programme will be rolled out in phases. These parameters ensure a streamlined and transparent evaluation process, expediting application reviews and approvals. Investors can access more information and apply for the incentive packages through the Invest Qatar Gateway, the country's first digital investor platform, offering a seamless application submission. Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Chairman of the Advisory Council, said: 'This initiative is a renewed testament to our unwavering commitment to create a world-class investment environment, that not only drives sustainable economic growth but also delivers long-term value to our partners. By aligning incentives with the Third National Development Strategy, we aim to attract and support investments that accelerate the development and growth of Qatar's strategic economic clusters.' Sheikh Ali Alwaleed Al-Thani, CEO, Invest Qatar, said: 'The launch of this programme marks a strategic step forward in achieving the goals of NDS3. It reinforces our commitment to support high-potential businesses that share our national vision for innovation, diversification and sustainable growth. By addressing the evolving needs of investors, the incentive packages are tailored to unlock growth across today's most dynamic sectors, while empowering the private sector, contributing to a more resilient, competitive and business-friendly landscape in Qatar.' The incentives programme builds on Qatar's National Incentives Framework, complementing the country's continued efforts to improve its business environment, through strategic policy reforms, new digital services and streamlined licensing procedures across multiple sectors. In 2024, Qatar attracted $2.74 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) through 241 projects, which created 9,348 jobs. The year also saw a rise in Qatar's international competitiveness, with the country climbing to 11th in the IMD World Competitiveness Index 2024, improving to 28th in the Global Economic Freedom Index and advancing to 24th in the DHL Connectedness Index.
