Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield retires after 9 seasons

(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) Whit Merrifield, a three-time MLB All-Star who last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2024, announced his retirement Tuesday after nine years in the big leagues. In a statement released through his agency, Warner Sports Management, Merrifield cited his family -- namely a daughter born in March 2024 -- as a reason to step away. 'I was never talented enough to just show up and play,' Merrifield said. 'Baseball required my full focus and energy for me to compete at the level I wanted to, and I realize I can no longer give that effort. 'At this point in life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders.' The 36-year-old infielder, a ninth-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in 2010, spent more than six seasons in the minor leagues before making his major league debut at age 27 in 2016. Merrifield ends his career with 1,249 hits -- including 94 home runs and 256 doubles -- and a .280 batting average in 1,147 games. He led the American League in stolen bases three times, finishing his career with 218 swipes. 'Since I've now had some time away from the game, I've had a chance to reflect on my individual career for the first time in my life,' Merrifield said. 'I'm proud of myself. The toughness I developed and the things I was able to accomplish, nobody outside of my camp thought possible.' Merrifield quickly established himself as a premier player for Kansas City after his call-up, earning MVP votes in 2018 after batting a career-best .304. He followed that up in 2019 with a .302 season that was highlighted by his first All-Star nod. He added another All-Star selection in 2021 and a third in 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Merrifield signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024 but was released after batting .199 in 53 games. He finished the year with the Braves, with whom he hit .248. 'I loved all the moments,' Merrifield said. 'All the highs and even all the lows. I'm grateful for the way this game molded me. I can't wait to tell my story to my daughter one day.' --Field Level Media

Dodgers, Tigers place 3 apiece as All-Star Game starters announced

(Photo credit: Robert Hanashiro-Imagn Images) Major League Baseball's top teams, the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers, each will have three representatives starting the 2025 MLB All-Star Game next Tuesday at Atlanta's Truist Park. The Tigers of the American League and Dodgers of the National League netted three starters as Phase 2 of the voting concluded at noon on Wednesday. Tiger outfielders Riley Greene and Javier Baez and second baseman Gleyber Torres were selected to start for the AL All-Stars, while Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Will Smith will join NL balloting front-runner Shohei Ohtani for the senior circuit. Ohtani will serve as the NL's designated hitter. This will be the fifth appearance overall and second as a National Leaguer for Ohtani, who entered Wednesday leading MLB with 83 runs scored (in 84 games) and tops the NL in home runs (30), slugging percentage (.637) and OPS (1.024). New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge led all players in the Phase 1 of voting from June 4-26 and will join Greene and Baez in the outfield. Judge has been selected seven times by the fans as an All-Star starter. He leads MLB in batting average (.358), hits (112), total bases (226), on-base percentage (.466), slugging percentage (.722) and OPS (1.188). Freeman picked up his ninth All-Star game selection to lead all 2025 honorees and fifth as a starter. MLB home-run leader Cal Raleigh (33) of the Seattle Mariners was selected as the AL's starting catcher for his All-Star Game debut, and rookie sensation Jacob Wilson of the Athletics earned the nod at shortstop. Joining Torres and Wilson in the American League infield are Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (fourth starter selection) and Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez (also his fourth start). Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn will make his All-Star game debut. Ronald Acuna Jr. (fifth starter selection) will represent the host Atlanta Braves in the outfield, along with Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs, each making their first start. Freeman will be accompanied on the infield by Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (third career start), New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (first-time starter) and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado, a seven-time All-Star and first-time starter. Wilson, currently second in the American League with a .339 batting average, is the first rookie shortstop to win a fan election and just the second rookie to earn a start at the position in the history of the Midsummer Classic. He also is the first Athletics shortstop to start since Bert Campaneris was in the lineup for three consecutive games from 1973-75. Acuna, who just returned to the field on May 23, is hitting a robust .350 with nine home runs in 35 games played. ESPN revealed the starters and will unveil the 23 reserves and pitchers for each squad on Sunday at 5 p.m. EDT. --Field Level Media

Jays beat Angels 4-3 in 10 innings as Clement bunt causes chaos for visitors

Los Angeles Angels' Jo Adell (7) slides safely into second base with a double ahead of the tag from Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Andres Gimenez in fifth inning MLB baseball action in Toronto on Friday, July 4, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jon Blacker TORONTO — A throwing error that travelled down the first-base line from Los Angeles Angels reliever Sam Bachman on an Ernie Clement bunt gave the Toronto Blue Jays a 4-3 walk-off win on Friday. With runners on first and second and none out, Clement bunted to the third-base side of the mound in the 10th inning scoring Myles Straw. Bachman threw high and the Blue Jays had their season-high sixth win in a row before 30,119 at Rogers Centre. Bachman (1-2) took the loss, while Chad Green (3-0) pitched the top of the 10th and registered the win. The Blue Jays sent seven players to the plate in a three-run sixth. Will Wagner scored on Andres Gimenez's single to left and the latter scored on Bo Bichette's single to left. George Springer scored on Zach Neto's error. Toronto starter Eric Lauer lost his magic in the seventh when Mike Trout and Taylor Ward singled to end his evening. Reliever Nick Sandlin was greeted with a 431-foot homer from Jo Adell to left centre for his 19th. In Lauer's six-plus innings, he was on the hook for two runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Lauer and his Los Angeles counterpart Kyle Hendricks were engaged in a pitchers' duel through five innings. Springer, who remained hot with a 2-for-4 game, broke through for Toronto's first hit, a one-out line-drive single to left field in the fourth inning. Adell led off the fifth inning for the Angels with a double into the left-field corner. Hendricks departed after 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, no walks and two strikeouts. TAKEAWAYS Angels: The Angels have pushed themselves into contention for a wild-card position. They began the day only 1 1/2 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the third and final American League spot. Blue Jays: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had the night off to rest and recover after fouling a pitch off his right foot in the sixth inning on Thursday. KEY MOMENT An error from Angels shortstop Neto on an Addison Barger bouncer up the middle went from a possible double play to another run and a 3-0 Toronto lead. KEY STAT Springer has batted 22-for-43 (. 512) with four homers, 19 RBIs, 15 runs scored, six walks and three stolen bases in his last 12 games. UP NEXT Toronto's Max Scherzer (0-0) faces Jack Kochanowicz (3-8) in Saturday's middle game of the three-game series against the Angels.
