Watch: Massive Wildfires in Turkey

MTV Lebanon01-07-2025
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that 25,000 firefighting personnel and around 150 aircraft are participating in extinguishing the wildfires, amid reports that the fires are spreading due to strong winds in the province of Izmir.
The wildfires have expanded due to strong winds along the border between the Menderes and Seferihisar regions in Izmir province, threatening homes and industrial areas.
The fire began at 10:00 GMT in a forested area in the Seferihisar district, leading to the burning of large areas of vegetation. Thick smoke and flames spread rapidly due to strong winds. Five neighborhoods were evacuated as the fires threatened residential areas.
Firefighting teams are still battling the blazes. Following a cabinet meeting in Ankara, President Erdoğan said: 'Some of the fires in various provinces have been brought under control. Nine fires are still active and are being extinguished. We are responding with our aerial fleet, consisting of 27 planes, 105 helicopters, and 14 drones. Nearly 6,000 water trucks, vehicles, and ambulances are involved in the efforts. A total of 25,000 of our brave personnel are working to put out the fires.'
Erdoğan added: 'Since June 1st, 1,516 wildfires have broken out in Turkey, of which 1,507 have been brought under control.'
He also said: 'Our planes and helicopters have conducted a total of 10,260 aerial sorties, dropping 33,200 tons of water. So far, 31 suspects have been arrested in connection with the fires.'
In the past few days alone, over 260 fires have erupted in forest and agricultural lands across Turkey. Fires have been reported in several western provinces, including Izmir, where the international airport was temporarily closed.
Fires were also reported in the southern provinces of Mersin and Hatay, as well as in the tourist provinces of Antalya and Muğla. The fires have not directly affected tourist areas and pose no threat to tourists.
More than 50,000 people have been evacuated due to the wildfires, particularly in the provinces of Izmir, Manisa (west), and Hatay (southeast), according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

Turkey Warned Iran of Suspected Mossad Assassination Plot Before Conflict

In a significant development ahead of recent tensions, Turkey reportedly alerted Iran to a suspected Mossad plot targeting Tehran and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) locations, according to security sources familiar with the matter. The warning came prior to the outbreak of the current conflict, and involved intelligence pointing to plans for extensive assassinations that were allegedly to be carried out by operatives linked to Israel's intelligence agency. While neither Turkish nor Iranian officials have officially confirmed the details, regional intelligence channels suggest that the plot aimed to destabilize Iran's internal security and possibly provoke retaliation ahead of broader regional escalations. This revelation adds a new layer to the ongoing shadow conflict between Iran and Israel, and highlights the complex intelligence coordination at play in the region — even between countries with strained or cautious relationships. Further details remain classified, and it is unclear whether any arrests or counter-measures were taken by Iranian authorities following Turkey's warning.

Erdogan says 'Turkey has won' after Kurdish PKK fighters disarm

by Naharnet Newsdesk 12 July 2025, 12:26 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday his country had achieved victory after Kurdish rebels destroyed their weapons, ending their decades-long armed struggle against Ankara. Friday's symbolic weapons destruction ceremony in Iraqi Kurdistan marked a major step in the transition of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) from armed insurgency to democratic politics -- part of a broader effort to end one of the region's longest-running conflicts. "Turkey has won. Eighty-six million citizens have won," Erdogan said. "We know what we are doing. Nobody needs to worry or ask questions. We are doing all this for Turkey, for our future". The PKK was formed in 1978 by Ankara University students, with the ultimate goal of achieving the Kurds' liberation through armed struggle. It took up arms in 1984 and the ensuing conflict has cost more than 40,000 lives.

Kurdish PKK fighters destroy weapons at key ceremony

by Naharnet Newsdesk 11 July 2025, 13:08 Fighters with a Kurdish separatist militant group that has waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkey began laying down their weapons in a symbolic ceremony Friday in northern Iraq, the first concrete step toward a promised disarmament as part of a peace process. The Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, announced in May it would disband and renounce armed conflict, ending four decades of hostilities. The move came after PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, who has been imprisoned on an island near Istanbul since 1999, urged his group in February to convene a congress and formally disband and disarm. Öcalan renewed his call in a video message broadcast Wednesday, saying, "I believe in the power of politics and social peace, not weapons." In Turkey, Devlet Bahceli, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's nationalist ally who initiated the peace process, welcomed the development. "Starting today, members of the separatist terrorist organization have begun surrendering their weapons in groups, marking historic developments that signal the end of a dark era," Bahceli said in a written statement. "These are exceptionally important days for both Turkey and our region." Bahceli, who has traditionally maintained a hardline stance against the PKK, had surprised everyone in October when he suggested in parliament that Öcalan could be granted parole if he renounced violence and disbanded the PKK. The ceremony took place in the mountains outside the city of Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region. The state-run Iraqi News Agency reported that "the process will take place in stages, with a group of party members initially laying down their weapons ;symbolically.'" The disarmament process is expected to be completed by September, the agency reported. The PKK has long maintained bases in the mountains of northern Iraq. Turkish forces have launched offensives and airstrikes against the PKK in Iraq and have set up bases in the area. Scores of villages have emptied as a result. The Iraqi government in Baghdad last year announced an official ban on the separatist group, which has long been prohibited in Turkey. Journalists were not allowed at the site of Friday's ceremony. An Iraqi Kurdish political official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said that about 30 fighters took part in the ceremony, which took place in the presence of a representative of the Turkish intelligence service and representatives of the Kurdish regional government, Iraq's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party, and the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party, a pro-Kurdish party in Turkey. PKK officials previously said that in order to continue the disarmament process, they want to see Turkey take steps to end "the regime of isolation" imposed on Öcalan in prison and to allow integration of former militants into the political system.
