Sky News14-02-2025

A pair of Dame Edna Everage's glasses have sold at auction for £37,800, 25 times their estimated value.
The glasses were expected to sell for between £1,000-£1,500, according to Christie's auction house, who facilitated the sale.
They were being sold as part of the personal collection of Barry Humphries.
Dame Edna was one of Humphries' best-known characters and became a hit in the UK in the 1970s.
The Australian star, who was known for his satirical characters including Dame Edna and the offensive Sir Les Patterson, died in April 2023 at the age of 89, following complications suffered during hip surgery.
The yellow-lacquered possum spectacles were one of a number of items sold during the auction, which was opened to bidders with Dame Edna's much-loved phrase "Hello Possums".
Christie's described the sale as evidence of "Edna's enduring appeal".
A first edition of Oscar Wilde's The Importance Of Being Earnest, signed by Wilde to his publisher, sold for £138,600, and a Charles Conder painting sold for almost £240,000.
Meanwhile, two dresses worn by Dame Edna sold for £21,420 each, eight times their pre-sale high estimates.
A number of other pieces of art, books and highlights of Humphries' collection were also sold during the auction which saw bidders from 41 countries and lasted nine hours.
The total sale value reached £4,627,224, exceeding the pre-sale estimate.
"These fantastic results are a testament to Barry's unique vision and lifelong passion for collecting," Benedict Winter, head of sale, private & iconic collections at Christie's London said.

Nick Kyrgios stuns Grand Slam champion with Wimbledon move after BBC snub

Naomi Osaka jokingly said Nick Kyrgios should come and sit with her team at Wimbledon and had no idea that the Australian had taken up her offer and watched her first round win Naomi Osaka had no idea that Nick Kyrgios was in her box cheering her on in the first round of Wimbledon after jokingly inviting him - not expecting him to rock up. The Australian, who made the final at SW19 back in 2022, is not in action but is in London and observed as the Japanese star won in straight sets. Osaka has won two Grand Slams in the past - two in the US and two in Australia - but has not reached those heights for years. ‌ She remains one of the tour's bubbliest personalities and begun her grass court effort impressively, winning 6-4, 7-6 against Talia Gibson. In the lead up to the contest Osaka joked that she'd like to have Kyrgios in her box cheering her on. He ended up accepting her offer, even if she had no idea he was there. ‌ Osaka said: "Oh, my God. I jokingly told someone, Hey, I know Nick's around, maybe he wants to come to my match. But I was joking, 'cause I know we're, like, two completely different players. Honestly, I would have loved to come to his matches, because I know he's pretty fun. "Yeah, I think that's also a big part of why we're different is 'cause I know he kind of like tells his box what to do, and he probably would have noticed if I was in there. I kind of, like, zone out most of the time. That's a little embarrassing that he was there. I guess it is cool that he was there." She added: "No, I mean, I am really excited to play mixed doubles with him. I think he's obviously won a doubles tournament. Well, we've played last year. I think Fritz was being a little bit too serious on me. Yeah, I think it should be fun. I don't know. I feel like for me, I have always felt like I've always related to him in a weird way, even though we're completely different. I kind of understand some of the things that he does. I hope in some way maybe he felt I wouldn't be bold enough to say 'inspired', but I hope he could relate a little bit to the things that I do, too." Kyrgios been dropped for BBC's Wimbledon coverage this year amid huge backlash after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari. The Australian star worked as a pundit for the broadcaster during last year's tournament, a decision which caused outrage after he admitted assaulting Passari during an incident in 2021. He is not playing in London after he was ruled out of the competition due to injury after suffering a "small setback" in his recovery.

Tennis star claims Raducanu is in 'love triangle' with Alcaraz and Draper

Emma Raducanu has already seen her relationship with Carlos Alcaraz speculated upon ahead of Wimbledon and now Australian star Nick Krygios has added another name to the mix Emma Raducanu, Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper could be in a love triangle according to outspoken tennis star Nick Kyrgios. With his tongue appearing to be firmly in his cheek, the Aussie ace suggested another name to add to the mix amid speculation of romance between Raducanu and reigning Wimbledon champion Alcaraz. Raducanu has already laughed off the suggestion of a romantic relationship with Alcaraz. The 2021 US Open champion is set to team up with Alcaraz to play mixed doubles at the US Open in September, which sparkd rumours there could be something more between them. ‌ Both players successfully navigated their way through the tournament's first round. Raducanu overcame Mimi Xu in straight sets while Alcarez required five to defeat 38-year-old Fabio Fognini. ‌ But for some, talk of love is dominating the air. And on talkSPORT, ex-Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios was asked when he knew about any possible romantic dalliance around SW19 for Alcaraz and Raducanu. Appearing a little caught off guard, Krygios first stumbled: "I don't know, I don't know about that nah, nah, I don't know." But with a laugh, he soon kicked into action. "I think it's a love triangle - Draper, Alcaraz and Raducanu," he said. "They're fighting over Raducanu I think, I'm not sure." "This is the stuff we want to hear," chipped in former Rangers striker Ally McCoist. "This is why I'm here Nick." "I don't know who's making her happy," Kyrgios added, when asked about the pressure on Raducanu and her happiness heading into Wimbledon. "I just think that the tennis world loves a love story, and they love to try and put two together. ‌ "Look Raducanu, she's doing fairly well. Obviously winning a Grand Slam at 19 is never easy, it comes with a lot of expectation from the outside world. So long as she's happy, there's so much pressure that comes from being a no.1 player and playing at Wimbledon. So hopefully she can find her feet. "Imagine her and Jack Draper winning the women's title and the men's title. That would be something." Raducanu has been long-time friend of Alcaraz having known each other since their teen years. The pair were spotted practising together at Wimbledon on Friday. ‌ Asked if they had discussed their US Open tactics, Raducanu said: "No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian. 'Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' And when the inevitable question about their relationship arrived, Raducanu offered a smile with her reply: 'We're just good friends.' The interview moderator then prompted a laugh from Raducanu after stepping in to end the questions. The Brit added: 'Way to wrap up!"

James Bond role 'narrowed down to three actors' who share one thing in common

The search for the new James Bond continues, as three actors are said to be in the running. James Bond fans have been waiting quite a while to find out who will be taking on the role of the iconic 007 agent, and now it seems show bosses may be a step closer to finding an actor. According to reports, it has now been whittled down to just three people who all share one thing in common. Many names have been thrown into the mix so far, with lots of fans speculating it may be another Scottish Bond like Sean Connery. ‌ However, unfortunately for us north of the border, that seems to be purely a rumour. Variety have reported that the top of Amazon's wish list for actors includes Saltburn star Jacob Elordi, Spider-Man's Tom Holland and Babygirl actor Harris Dickinson. ‌ The three stars all share one thing in common - their age. Apparently, producers are looking for a British actor who is under the age of 30 and although Jacob, 28, is Australian, he is still in the running. Fellow Australian actor George Lazenby took on the iconic role in 1969, writes The Mirror. Fans have shared a mix of feelings towards the rumours as one person wrote in response to Tom Holland becoming 007: 'I'm down for it. He's a great actor. ‌ "Would have loved to see Idris Elba get the role but its probably too late for that now', while another said: 'I don't mean to be unkind, but I'm not aware Holland clears the threshold of charisma required.' Amazon completed its massive $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM Studios just over three years ago, which included the James Bond franchise. ‌ Fans of the movie haven't seen a new James Bond film since 2021, when No Time to Die was released as the final movie with Daniel Craig playing the lead role. Many names have been thrown into the mix since then, including Henry Cavill, Rege‑Jean Page, Sam Heughan, James Norton and Theo James. ‌ Amazon announced last week that Denis Villeneuve has signed up to direct the movie. He is best known for directing the Dune movies. Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers. Upon taking the role, Denis emphasised that he is a huge fan of the franchise and that it is a 'huge honour' to take on the role of director. He said: 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. ‌ "I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.' He continued: 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.' Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, commented, 'We are honoured that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
