HC pulls up CBFC for delay in certifying film on Yogi Adityanath

Hindustan Times2 days ago
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday questioned the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over its delay in certifying Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, a film purportedly based on Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath's life. The court also took note of the fact that the film draws from a published book that has been in the public domain for years without incident. HC pulls up CBFC for delay in certifying film on Yogi Adityanath
A division bench of justices Revati Mohite Dere and Dr Neela Gokhale was hearing a petition filed by the film's producers, Samrat Cinematics India Pvt Ltd, challenging the CBFC's refusal to certify the movie. The film is said to be inspired by Shantanu Gupta's 2017 biography of Adityanath, The Monk Who Became Chief Minister.
The court issued a notice to the CBFC and directed it to respond by Friday.
The petitioners told the court that they first applied for certification on June 5. Under the Cinematograph Act, 1952 and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, the board is required to process such applications within a week and schedule a screening within the next 15 days. However, more than a month had passed without any communication, they said.
Calling the delay 'arbitrary, unreasonable, and unexplained,' the producers alleged that the CBFC had stalled the process deliberately, despite the film being slated for release on August 1 across over 1,500 cinema halls. They also said they reapplied under the board's 'priority scheme,' paying three times the usual fee, and were given a screening date of July 7—which was later cancelled without any explanation.
The producers further alleged that the CBFC had asked them to procure a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's office (CMO)—a demand they termed 'erroneous and extraneous,' citing no such requirement in the certification rules.
'It is a matter of record that the book which forms the foundation of the film has been officially endorsed by the CMO,' the petition said, adding that the film was a 'truthful, respectful, and inspiring portrayal' of a public figure.
The court observed that the censor board could not sit indefinitely on an application, especially after charging priority fees. 'The application has to be decided. You cannot just sit on it,' the bench said.
Notably, a similar petition had been disposed of on July 17, after the CBFC told the court that it would take a decision on certification within two days. The producers have now returned to court, alleging continued inaction and seeking relief ahead of the film's scheduled release.

‘Coolie' censor surprise: Five Rajinikanth films that received an ‘A' certificate

The A certificate for Rajinikanth's Cooliehas taken fans of the superstar by surprise. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the pan-Indian movie is set to hit the screens on August 14, 2025. The movie boasts of a stellar cast, including Aamir Khan, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Nagarjuna and Shruti Haasan. Reports say a Rajinikanth film has got an 'A' certificate from the CBFC after 36 years. While violence and gruesome visuals are common in a Lokesh Kanagaraj movie, Rajinikanth movies have the reputation of being made for the family audience. That said, in the recent times, the superstar has been experimenting with subjects that led by ruthless protagonists involved in violent activities. Jailer, Kaala and Kabali had violent sequences, uncharacteristic of a typical Rajinikanth movie. While many of Rajinikanth's 'A'-rated movies in his illustrious career have gone on to become blockbusters, some of them have failed at the box office. Here is a look at five Rajinikanth movies that received an 'A' certificate from the censor board. 'Naan Sigappu Manithan' (1985) Rajinikanth plays a Robin Hood in this action thriller. Directed by SA Chandrasekhar, the movie is a remake of the Hindi film Aap Ki Awaaz (1984), starring Raj Babbar. Rajinikanth plays Vijay, a Tamil professor who is forced to turn into a vigilante due to hostile circumstances. With music from Ilaiyaraaja, Naan Sigappu Manithan is a gory and violent drama. 'Naan Mahaan Alla' (1984) A remake of the 1978 Shatrughan Sinha movie Vishwanath (1978), the Tamil film is directed by SP Muthuraman. Rajinikanth essays the role of a lawyer named Vishwanath. The movie, which went on to taste commercial success, is an action-filled revenge drama with a fiery performance from the 'superstar'. Interestingly, the movie was initially titled Naan Gandhi Alla. 'Netrikkan' (1981) This SP Muthuraman movie had Rajinikanth playing a double role. While Visu wrote the story and dialogues for the movie, K Balachander penned the screenplay for Netrikkan. Rajinikanth received praise for his portrayal of a crooked middle-aged womaniser named Chakravarthy. The film revolves around a father-son clash, with Rajinikanth essaying both the characters. 'Pudhukavithai' (1982) A remake of the Kannada blockbuster Naa Ninna Mareyalare (1982) starring Dr Rajkumar, the movie is from Rajinikanth's hit director SP Muthuraman. In the romantic drama, Jyothi and Saritha star opposite Rajinikanth. The superstar stood out as a motorcycle champion in the Tamil blockbuster. The Ameerajan directorial is a remake of the Hindi drama Khoon Pasina (1977). The movie is regarded as one of the biggest box office failures in Rajinikanth's career. Lokesh Kanagaraj has stressed in interviews that there won't be compromise on violence in Coolie. It remains to be seen if the highly-anticipated movie will be the most violent Rajinikanth movie ever.
