'In a way, you can think of this as an attempt to increase resilience by increasing the stability of ASEAN's economic ties across the world,' he added. Balakrishnan noted the strong participation of external partners as a testament to ASEAN's influence. He also pointed to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link as potential blueprints for cross-border collaboration. 'From an ASEAN perspective, this (JS-SEZ) also may have relevant lessons for how to do cross-border collaboration that provides competitive advantage by pooling complementary strengths,' he said. On the Thailand-Cambodia border tensions, Balakrishnan stressed the importance of discreet diplomacy. 'I am not in a position to reveal the sensitive nature of the discussions which went on here, but I would make this point. It calls for quiet, discreet, constructive, effective diplomacy,' he said. The decision was made during the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) held recently, reflecting ASEAN's dedication to maintaining consistency in its external relations amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. The ministers emphasised the need to shift focus from quantity to strategic value in partnerships, ensuring alignment with ASEAN's long-term priorities. 'ASEAN must continue upholding its centrality and role as the primary driving force in managing relations with external partners,' the ministers agreed. This includes reviewing the moratorium on new Dialogue Partnerships, initiated in 2021, to ensure coherence with ASEAN Community Vision 2045. A key outcome of the meeting was the directive for the ASEAN Secretariat to prepare a comprehensive Assessment Paper on ASEAN's Formal Partnerships. This document will serve as a strategic guide for future engagements, ensuring they remain grounded in ASEAN's principles as outlined in the ASEAN Charter and TAC. The review process will adopt an action-oriented approach, covering all three pillars of the ASEAN Community and the ASEAN Connectivity agenda. KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — A series of courtesy visits by dignitaries from various countries, as well as the European Union, highlight Malaysia's active role in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia had received visits from dignitaries from Australia, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Palestine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, the European Union and the United Kingdom yesterday. 'These meetings open up new areas of cooperation in trade, education, technology, humanitarianism and regional peace, which reflect Malaysia's commitment as a principled and trusted partner on the international stage,' he said in a post on X today. Anwar Ibrahim yesterday held several bilateral meetings with leaders and senior representatives from seven countries and international entities, on the sidelines of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings here.
