Cybertrucks, robots and grilled cheese: Elon Musk opens Tesla Diner to the public

Minta day ago
After years of speculation and a soft launch over the weekend, Elon Musk's much-hyped Tesla Diner and Drive-In officially opened its doors to the public late Monday, reported NBC News.
Notably, the eager fans who began queueing as early as sunrise.
Located at the site of a former Shakey's Pizza on Santa Monica Boulevard, the retro-futuristic diner attracted a sizeable crowd of Tesla enthusiasts from across California, many of whom waited patiently for hours in the heat with no clear communication about the opening time, added the publication.
Reportedly, the two-storey establishment combines a traditional American diner with Tesla-branded features, including charging stations, an Optimus humanoid robot serving popcorn, and a rooftop drive-in theatre playing vintage shows such as The Jetsons. Inside, customers were welcomed by servers on roller skates offering ice cream samples.
The menu, reportedly designed by Los Angeles chef Eric Greenspan, features diner-style staples like grilled cheese, fried chicken and waffles, and tuna melts, alongside Tesla-themed items such as the "Tesla Burger" with "Electric Sauce". Prices range from $4 for sides to $15 for main dishes.
Despite the lack of formal announcements regarding the opening time, fans remained in good spirits. Some shared donuts with fellow diners, others brought lawn chairs and struck up conversations about different Tesla models. Several arrived in Cybertrucks and other Tesla vehicles, hoping to utilise the new Supercharger stations, which remained inaccessible throughout the wait.
One San Diego-based visitor, Tracy Kuss, said she arrived at 8 a.m. but was concerned about her battery running low after several hours of waiting, the report mentioned. 'I need to be the first to charge,' she joked. Another couple, YouTuber 'Everyday Chris' and his wife Janice, had been on-site since 5:30 a.m., hoping to see the robot and try out the space-themed bathrooms that had appeared in viral videos over the weekend.
According to the report, the opening drew several prominent names from Tesla's social media circles, including influencers with large followings on X. A Cybertruck covered in Dogecoin-inspired graphics was also spotted near the entrance, drawing attention from passersby.
While the event served as a showcase of brand loyalty among die-hard fans, Musk's continued visibility in politics and business has also stirred controversy. One local demonstrator carried a sign reading, 'Elon Musk save America from evil Trump and his puppets', referring to Musk's previous political alignment with the former US President, which has since soured. Musk's brief tenure in government through the Department of Government Efficiency drew backlash after budget cuts negatively affected Tesla's stock earlier this year.
Musk has expressed plans to expand the diner concept. In a post on X, he said, 'If our retro-futuristic diner turns out well... Tesla will establish these in major cities around the world, as well as at Supercharger sites on long distance routes.'

US automakers say Trumps 15% tariff deal with Japan puts them at disadvantage

Washington, Jul 23 (AP) US automakers are concerned about President Donald Trump's agreement to tariff Japanese vehicles at 15%, saying they will face steeper import taxes on steel, aluminum and parts than their competitors. 'We need to review all the details of the agreement, but this is a deal that will charge lower tariffs on Japanese autos with no US content," said Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Big 3 American automakers, General Motors, Ford and Jeep-maker Stellantis. Blunt said in an interview the US companies and workers 'definitely are at a disadvantage" because they face a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum and a 25% tariff on parts and finished vehicles, with some exceptions for products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that went into effect in 2020. The domestic automaker reaction reveals the challenge of enforcing policies across the world economy, showing that for all of Trump's promises there can be genuine tradeoffs from policy choices that risk serious blowback in politically important states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, where automaking is both a source of income and of identity. Trump portrayed the trade framework as a major win after announcing it on Tuesday, saying it would add hundreds of thousands of jobs to the US economy and open the Japanese economy in ways that could close a persistent trade imbalance. The agreement includes a 15% tariff that replaces the 25% import tax the Republican president had threatened to charge starting on Aug 1. Japan would also put together $550 billion to invest in US projects, the White House said. The framework with Japan will remove regulations that prevent American vehicles from being sold in that country, the White House has said, adding that it would be possible for vehicles built in Detroit to be shipped directly to Japan and ready to be sold. But Blunt said that foreign auto producers, including the US, Europe and South Korea, have just a 6% share in Japan, raising scepticism that simply having the open market that the Trump administration says will exist in that country will be sufficient. 'Tough nut to crack, and I'd be very surprised if we see any meaningful market penetration in Japan," Blunt said. Major Japanese automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the trade framework, nor did Autos Drive America or the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, organisations that also represent the industry. There is the possibility that the Japanese framework would give automakers and other countries grounds for pushing for changes in the Trump administration's tariffs regime. The president has previously said that flexibility in import tax negotiations is something he values. The USMCA is up for review next year. Ford, GM and Stellantis do 'have every right to be upset," said Sam Fiorani, vice president at consultancy AutoForecast Solutions. But 'Honda, Toyota, and Nissan still import vehicles from Mexico and Canada, where the current levels of tariffs can be higher than those applied to Japanese imports. Most of the high-volume models from Japanese brands are already produced in North America." Fiorani noted that among the few exceptions are the Toyota 4Runner, the Mazda CX-5 and the Subaru Forester, but most of the other imports fill niches that are too small to warrant production in the US. 'There will be negotiations between the US and Canada and Mexico, and it will probably result in tariffs no higher than 15%," Fiorani added, 'but nobody seems to be in a hurry to negotiate around the last Trump administration's free trade agreement." Trump: Japan deal reached with tariff rate set at 15%

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said he reached a trade deal with Japan that will set tariffs on Japanese imports at 15% and see the key American ally invest $550 billion into the US. "I just signed the largest trade deal in history - I think maybe the largest deal in history - with Japan," Trump said at an event at the White House on Tuesday after announcing the deal on social media. "And that was done with Japan. They had their top people here and we worked on it long and hard and it's a great deal for everybody." Trump has repeatedly zeroed in on auto trade as he criticizes trade imbalances with the country. Around 80% of Japan's trade surplus with the US is in cars and auto parts. Additional details of the preliminary agreement with Japan - including, critically, if Japanese automobiles and parts would receive a carve-out from separate 25% tariffs - were not immediately available. Japan's public broadcaster NHK said Washington would also lower the rate on the auto sector to 15%, citing an unidentified government official. Shares in Japanese carmakers jumped in Tokyo, with Toyota Motor Corp . rising more than 11%. Live Events "Japan and the US have been conducting close negotiations with our national interests on the line," Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said in Tokyo. "The two nations will continue to work together to create jobs and good products." Trump has previously announced trade frameworks without many specifics only for the White House to provide details days and weeks later, as terms are hammered out. Trump indicated at the event with Republican lawmakers at the White House that he also expects to sign a deal on a joint venture with Japan to export liquefied natural gas from Alaska. White House spokespeople did not immediately respond to requests for more information.
