The Chicago Sky moved to 3-7 during the 2025 WNBA season with a 78 to 66 win against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. The victory also snapped a three-game losing streak and gave the Sky their first win in the Commissioner's Cup.

Angel Reese made history against the Sun by recording her first career triple-double, becoming just the second player in the WNBA to do so this season (via Yahoo Sports).
Rookie guard Hailey Van Lith also had her best WNBA performance yet, as she recorded a career-high 16 points and a career-best five rebounds. Her 24 minutes were also the second-most she has played in a single game this season.

Van Lith had only been averaging 3.7 points and 1.0 rebounds per contest during the 2025 WNBA season prior to Sunday's win against Connecticut. Her career highs were seven points and four rebounds, which came in different games, until she exceeded those against the Sun.

After the win, the rookie detailed a slight change that the Chicago coaching staff made for her before the contest. Van Lith talked at length about how the Sky decided to transition her more toward being a point guard rather than a shooting guard.
'I actually am not naturally a two anymore, I'm more naturally a one at this point,' Van Lith said. 'The reason that we have tried to do it, just talking with the coaching staff, is they're trying to get me more opportunities off the triple threat catch instead of always having a live dribble.'
Van Lith is now averaging 5.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest through the first eight games of her WNBA career (via Pro Basketball Reference).

With 15-year veteran Courtney Vandersloot sidelined for the season with a knee injury, the No. 11 overall pick may find herself in an expanded role.
Chicago is back in action on Tuesday evening when they host the 4-7 Washington Mystics for the last game of the Commissioner's Cup. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

Detroit to return as WBNA franchise city in 2029
Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia have been named the next three cities to get expansion teams in the WNBA. Detroit's first year of play is expected to be in 2029, according to the announcement. The women's team will play in Little Ceasars Arena, home of the NBA's Detroit Pistons. A new practice facility will be built. The majority ownership is Tom Gores, who owns the Pistons. Minority owners will be Grant Hill, Chris Webber and Jared Goff. He formally submitted a bid on behalf of an expansion ownership group in January. "I think this will be bigger than just the basketball team coming back. It's recognition of all the things that are happening in the city. And finally, I think it's going to have a real economic impact," Pistons vice chairman Arn Tellem said. Detroit was first awarded a WNBA franchise in 1996. The Detroit Shock played in Auburn Hills from 1998 to 2009, with the team moving to Tulsa and then Dallas. "Detroit is a sports town that loves its teams deeply and consistently shows up with unwavering passion," Gores said when the plans were announced. "At a critical moment in the growth and development of the WNBA, it supported the hometown team more than any other franchise in the league. We're here to rekindle that legacy." Cleveland will start playing in the league in 2028 at Rocket Arena, home of the Cavaliers. The majority ownership is with Dan Gilbert, who owns the Cavaliers. Cleveland also is a former home city for the WNBA. Philadelphia will start playing in the league in 2030 in a new arena in downtown Philadelphia. WNBA expanding to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia over next five years
NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA is expanding to 18 teams over the next five years, with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia all set to join the league by 2030. Cleveland will begin play in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia the season after, assuming they get approval from the NBA and WNBA Board of Governors. Toronto and Portland will enter the league next year. Advertisement 'The demand for women's basketball has never been higher, and we are thrilled to welcome Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia to the WNBA family,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. 'This historic expansion is a powerful reflection of our league's extraordinary momentum, the depth of talent across the game, and the surging demand for investment in women's professional basketball.' All three new teams announced Monday have NBA ownership groups. Each paid a $250 million expansion fee, which is about five times as much as Golden State dished out for a team a few years ago. All three teams will also be investing more money through building practice facilities and other such amenities. 'It's such a natural fit that when you already have this basketball-related infrastructure, these strategies, cultures that you find to be successful, combinations of personnel that you find to be successful,' said Nic Barlage, CEO of Rock Entertainment Group and the Cavaliers. 'Extending that into the WNBA, is just a natural next progression, especially if you have a desire to grow like we do.'
