Brazil wonderkid bids emotional farewell ahead of £29m transfer to Chelsea
Brazil wonderkid Estevao Willian said an emotional farewell after crashing out of the Club World Cup to his new club.
Estevao, 18, scored a wonder goal for Palmeiras in the Lincoln Financial Field but it was not enough to stop them losing 2-1 to Chelsea, who are now into the semi finals in New York next Tuesday.
Palmeiras starlet Estevao has already agreed a £29m-plus deal to join Chelsea after the tournament and this was his last game for the Brazilian club.
Estevao has already been criticised after he admitted it has been difficult to 'focus' because he is joining Chelsea and there were even doubts whether he would start. But Estevao repaid Palmeiras' faith as he was made FIFA's man of the match even though he ended up on the losing side.
Estevao, regarded as Brazil's brightest new talent, said: 'I want to open up my heart because last time you interpreted my words differently but something my father said was to give my best on the pitch and this is what I did.
'I did everything, everything. That's it - we have to move on. I am leaving Palmeiras and move on from this group but I think Palmeiras from everything they have given in my career.'
Estevao also paid tribute to Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira who he described as his 'professor.' He added: 'I wanted to say thank you professor. I want to say thank you for everything. I love this guy so much. I thank god every day for putting Abel in my life.
'He gave me everything. He taught me how to play. He trained me, I learned a lot from him, I loved having Abel and Palmeiras every day in my life. Palmeiras opened the door for me. I was deeply happy in Palmeiras and my family knows how happy I was at Palmeiras.'
Estevao made his debut for Brazil aged just 17, has already won five senior caps and is regarded as a generational talent in his home country. They see him as a better prospect than Real Madrid starlet Endrick and possibly the best young talent since Neymar.
His dribbling and goals have drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi and Nike signed him to a professional contract when he was 10, making him the youngest Brazilian to sign with them.
Joao Paulo Sampaio, the head of Palmeiras' youth academy, told the BBC: 'Estevao is the best player to have emerged from Brazilian football since Neymar. You watch him and you fall in love.
'He already impresses with his technique but, like Neymar at this same point in his career, he has not yet matured physically and is not as strong as Endrick, so he could still develop a lot. That's what amazes everyone and makes them think that he will reach a much higher level.'

'Let's go and exceed expectations' - fans on Palmeiras win
We asked for your views following Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Palmeiras to reach the semi-finals of the Club World are some of your comments:Mujahid: Target accomplished. Before this tournament, my target for Chelsea was to reach the semi-finals. Let's go and exceed Estevao looks amazing - what a talent he is. He was the heartbeat of Palmeiras. I'm looking forward to watching him play for Chelsea. Overall, a good performance by Chelsea. Bring on Starting to really come together. Liam Delap did well, Pedro Neto was great and Cole Palmer superb but I still wince every time the ball goes back to Robert Sanchez. Get Mike Maignan in and get rid of Raheem Sterling and the rest, even if we have to give them away!Nick: Chelsea looked like they were really starting to purr in the first half. The team and the style of play seems to be coming together. Patience is still required. They're still young, but their mentality seems to be right as when they get pegged back they seem to find a way forward. As for Estevao, he is going to terrorise defenders for years to Starting to see a style of play in this Chelsea team that has been absent for I am still thinking Enzo Maresca is not the right manager to lead Chelsea.

Now this former Celtic star could be on the move again as he's reportedly closing in on a stunning switch which would see him head across the globe. But ex-Celtic winger Mikey Johnston looks set to make that journey after emerging as a major target for a club based in Rio de Janeiro. Johnston, 26, is believed to be nearing a £5million exit from West Brom to join Brazilian top flight outfit Flamengo. The Republic of Ireland international has been added to the Brazilian giant's shirtlist, with manager Filipe Luis keen to bring the skillful wide-man to the club. Flamengo are one of the most supported clubs in the country with their iconic 73,000 seated Maracana Stadium, which hosted the 2014 World Cup final and opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics. They are one of the most successful clubs in the country too having lifted the league title as many as seven times and are currently top of the table this season as well. According to the Express and Star, Flamengo have made a formal approach for Johnston and are now set to reach an agreement with West Brom. It's stated that the English Championship club will receive around £5m from the transfer. That would see the Hawthorns club make a healthy profit on the player who they bought from Celtic for around £3m last year. Johnston spent seven years as a first team player at Parkhead before heading to West Brom permanently following a successful loan spell. Ex-Celtic star Mikey Johnston's dismissive verdict on former Rangers ace as he rates Premier League cult heroes Brazil might be unchartered territory for the player but he will be fairly familiar with the language should he complete the move. The primary language in Rio de Janeiro is Portuguese and Johnston spent the 2023/24 season in Portugal with Vitoria de Guimaraes Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Enzo Maresca sends clear transfer message to Arsenal target Noni Madueke
Enzo Maresca has told Noni Madueke he should leave Chelsea if he is 'unhappy' at the club, amid strong transfer interest from Arsenal. Despite enjoying a good 2024/25 season, recording 16 goal contributions in 41 games, Chelsea are reportedly open to selling Madueke this summer. The Blues have been very active in the transfer market, notably signing forwards Joao Pedro, Estevao and Jamie Gittens for a combined £139million. Their arrival may force Madueke out of the team, which may lead to him seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge. Arsenal are desperate to sign a new wide-attacker and have shortlisted the England international alongside Eberechi Eze, Rodrygo and Anthony Gordon. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Valued at £50m by Chelsea, the 23-year-old would be the cheapest option but it remains to be seen whether the Gunners are willing to pay that price tag. The Guardian report that Madueke, who spent time in Tottenham's academy, is open to moving across London, just as Kepa Arrizabala has done, and could actually be available for £40m. Nothing will be decided until after the Club World Cup where Chelsea have reached the semi-finals following a 2-1 win against Palmeries in Philadelphia. Madueke came on in the 54th minute of Saturday's match alongside debutant Pedro and afterward Maresca revealed the winger was 'free to go' if he wanted. 'Noni has been very important for us during this season,' the Blues head coach insisted in his pre-match press conference. Appearances: 91 Goals: 20 Assists: 9 Trophies: Conference League 'Today, again, he has been important. But my message to the players and to the club is that I want just players that are happy to be with us. 'The ones that are not happy, they are free to go. It's not for Noni, it's for all the players we have. 'But again, Noni has been very good during the season and very good tonight.' Chelsea will take on Fluminense in the Club World Cup semi-final but will have to do so without a number of players thanks to injury and suspension. More Trending Romeo Lavia and Reece James have picked up injuries while Levi Colwill and Liam Delap are suspended after picking up their second yellow cards of the tournament. Asked if Pedro could make his full debut against Fluminese in Delap's place, Maresca responded: 'Yes, since he arrived, the reason why we decided for him is because since he arrived, even if he was on holiday, he looks sharp, he looks good. 'And we gave him some minutes. Also, I think he was just inside when they scored. And I think since he was inside, him and Noni, I think, again, we were much better. 'So, we knew him very well. The reason why he's here is because we like him and we are sure that he's going to help us.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
