Devotion & drums: Month-long Bonalu festival starts at Golconda Fort with Bonam offering to Goddess Jagadambika
Rooted in centuries-old customs, Bonalu is celebrated during the Ashada masam (July–Aug) to honour the Goddess Mahakali for protecting people from disease and evil. The rituals began with priests invoking divine blessings, followed by a lively procession from Langar Houz to the hilltop Jagadamba temple.
Hundreds of women, clad in vibrant sarees and traditional jewellery, carried intricately decorated earthen pots on their heads.
These Bonams—offerings of cooked rice, jaggery, curd, and neem leaves—symbolise devotion and a prayer for protection.

They were accompanied by Potharajus, whip-wielding guardians believed to represent goddess's brother, dancing energetically to the beats of drums.
Endowments minister Konda Surekha offered 'pattu vastrams' to the deity on behalf of the state govt. The festivities were attended by Greater Hyderabad mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, assembly speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, and transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar, among others.

Crafting objects that transcend faiths
Jehangir trusts only Yadagiri when it comes to the colourful decoration that is part of the Muharram commemoration in Telangana. Known as Peerula Panduga, the observance of Muharram, takes on a syncretic cultural aspect that is unique to the region and parts of rural Andhra Pradesh. The replica of battle standards used in the battle of Karbala which are known as alam are called piru in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. 'There is nobody who has the skill, ability and craftsmanship like Yadagirisaab. Look at these paper flowers. They look real. No plastic decor can match what he can do,' says Jehangir who has travelled from Choutuppal to Charminar to pick up the decoration that is known as sehra. An intricate design that uses a bamboo frame with red and green coloured paper, mirrors, photographs and shimmer. 'The sehra is used to keep the alam in the middle,' says Jehangir who runs a chicken business in Choutuppal. Yadagiri is a fourth generation bamboo craftsman for the sehra and thotelu who lives with his wife Anusaya. 'He is an artist. He has a way of moving scissors or drawing a line that cannot be matched. Look at these figures and the cut,' she says proudly as Yadagiri's fingers move briskly from scissors, to adhesive to bending the bamboo sticks. Sitting inside another small room on the road to Charminar, with his mother and brother lending a helping hand is Naveen Kumar, another craftsman who nimbly weaves thin bamboo strands into a round object that will be the finial of another bamboo artefact of another faith — thotelu. On the first day of Bonalu festival, the tall square miniature temples (objects fashioned out of bamboo and covered with coloured paper), are taken out in procession through the streets. '90% of the orders we get for sehra are from the districts. People send photographs and place the order and pick them up three days before Ashoora (10th day of Muharram). We have more orders for Bonalu thotelu,' says Naveen Kumar who makes both the objects that transcend faith and belief systems. 'I know when Aashadam is and plan logistics accordingly. I know that Islamic calendar keeps advancing by a few days and track that as well,' says Santosh Anand, another craftsman near the oldest Jama Masjid in Hyderabad. While modern Hyderabad is considered one city, the tradition of Bonalu shows how it is a collection of cities with the first Bonalu celebration at the Golconda Fort, followed by Lashkar Bonalu or the Bonalu in Secunderabad and ending up with the Bonalu of Akkanna Madanna Mahankali Temple in the Old City. Not surprisingly, Bonalu is not celebrated in a big way in rural Telangana.

Thousands witness celestial wedding of Renuka Yellamma at Balkampet
Hyderabad: The celestial Kalyanotsavam of Sri Renuka Yellamma Ammavaru at Balkampet was grandly held on Tuesday. The Kalyanam was held at 11.55 am. The Endowments Minister Konda Surekha offered silk clothes to the goddesses. Kalyanam is orgainsed on the first Tuesday of Ashada Masam. The devotees were lined up before the temple from 5 am on Tuesday. The temple authorities organised queue lines and VIP entries. A large number of devotees and Shiva Sattulu thronged to the temple premises to witness the wedding. The rush was so huge that it took five hours for the devotees to have darshan. The Kalyanotsavam are taken up for three days. On the first day there will be 'Edurukolu', Kalyanam on second day and Rathotsavam on the third day. Minister Konda Surekha said that Balkampet Yellamma is the deity who relieves the sufferings of the people of Hyderabad. She reminded that there was a buzz of Bonalu in the areas around Hyderabad during the month of Ashadham. The minister said that the Bonalu culture came during a time when a pandemic was raging here in the past. It is the belief of the people here that when a disaster struck the great city of Hyderabad and hundreds of people were dying, Balkampet Yellamma saved the lives of many people by protecting them. She said that the Bonalu festival has become a great celebration for the people here. The Minister said that this time, the government led by CM A Revanth Reddy allocated Rs 20 crores and ensured that there was no problem anywhere. He reminded that lakhs of devotees come to see the goddess every year... All arrangements have been made for that. She said that she was very lucky to have the opportunity to offer silk clothes to the goddess on behalf of the state government. She prayed to the goddess for good rains and good health for the crops. The traffic police imposed traffic restricts on the Balkampet road. The city police commissioner CV Anand supervised the arrangements. He inspected the control room and cctv surveillance center and accessed overall preparedness to ensure effective crowd management and public safety. Bangaru Bonalu presented to Goddess Kanaka Durga
Vijayawada: Telangana Bhagyanagar Sri Mahankali Jatara Bonalu Utsavalu Ummadi Devalayala Committee members presented Bangaru Bonalu to the Goddess Kanaka Durga at Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy varla Devasthanm, the Durga temple on Indrakeeladri on Sunday. Committee president G Raghavendar has handed over Bangaru Bonalu to Endowments Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy on Indrakeeladri. Every year the Ummadi Devalaya Committee, Hyderabad offers Bonalu to the Goddess to mark the Ashada Masam. Over 500 devotees and artistes came from Hyderabad and performed rituals near the Jammidoddi junction in Brahmin street. Durga temple Executive Officer Seena Naik and the temple priests joined the Ummadi Devalaya committee members and performed special pujas near Jammidoddi centre. Later, a procession was taken out from Jammidoddi centre to Indrakeeladri passing via Ghat road. The Telangana devotees and artistes participated in a special attire performing dances and beating the drums and playing Kolatam. Andhra Pradesh artistes too joined the procession performing Kolatam, Nemali dance, Kagaram dance and wearing special attire. The devotees and artistes reached the Indrakeeladri temple via Ghat road with fanfare and performing the traditional and folk dances. Endowments Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy welcomed the Ummadi Devalaya committee president G Raghavendar and other committee members. The Minister received the Golden Bonalu from Raghavendar. He and the visiting devotees prayed for the prosperity and wellbeing of all Telugu people living in two Telugu states. Durga temple EO Seena Naik instructed the officials to ensure food and all facilities to the devotees who came from Hyderabad. Several hundred devotees visited the Durga temple on Sunday. Keeping in view the heavy rush, the temple EO cancelled the Rs 500 ticket. Free Prasadam was given to the visiting devotees. Ummadi Devalayala Committee members, devotees and artistes expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made for them by the Durga temple administration.
