Nintendo president apologizes for Switch 2 shortage — says demand greatly exceeded expectations

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has issued an apology during the company's 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, acknowledging that initial demand for the Switch 2 'greatly exceeded expectations.' The long-awaited console arrived on store shelves early in June, smashing the original Nintendo Switch's sales record by almost a million copies. Although it seems that the U.S. and the U.K. did not face any supply issues during the launch, other markets — most notably Japan — aren't as lucky. According to Nintendo Life, one shareholder even asked Furukawa about the reason for the shortage because of how severe the problem seemed to be. 'Currently, demand for the Switch 2 is outpacing supply in many countries, and we're unable to fully meet it. We understand that even some of our shareholders have not been able to obtain one. Starting in April, we accepted lottery-based purchases through the My Nintendo Store. The number of applicants greatly exceeded our expectations, with 2.2 million entries — a figure I publicly announced in my name along with an apology,' Furukawa said during the meeting [machine translated]. 'Since then, we've held four rounds of lottery sales, but there are still many who weren't selected. We've announced a fifth round starting in July. Many major retail stores have also resorted to lottery-based sales,' he added. 'Gradually, more locations are beginning to offer direct in-store sales as well. As a company, we are working to strengthen our production system so we can deliver as many units as possible to our customers. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the initial demand far exceeding our forecasts.' The company apparently prioritized the U.S. and Europe, which are its largest markets. According to Statista, Japan only ranks third in the company's global revenue, so it makes sense for Nintendo to stock up in countries where it will make the most sales. But even though gamers in those areas can easily buy a Switch 2, they did not escape from a few hiccups, including a few units that showed signs of tampering and staples puncturing screens after store employees staple the receipt to the box. Despite those issues, the Switch 2 is one of the more successful global launches in recent history. While some regions did not escape shortages, this is unlike the arrival of Nvidia's RTX 40-series and 50-series GPUs and the PlayStation 5, which all suffered from a lack of supply, leading to artificially increased prices and the proliferation of scalpers. So, if you're in the U.S. and the U.K., you don't have to worry about getting stiffed when buying the latest Nintendo gaming console — you can easily get one as long as you know where to buy the Switch 2. Apple's alien thriller Invasion is back for season 3 in August

The alien invasion continues, as Apple just confirmed the next season of Invasion will be streaming this summer. The new season will premiere on Apple TV Plus on August 22nd, with weekly episodes running on Fridays through to October 24th. Alongside the announcement, Apple also released a very brief teaser, which, if nothing else, suggests we're going to learn a lot more about the invading aliens as the conflict ramps up. Invasion originally premiered in 2021 as part of the streaming service's big push into science fiction. After a slow start, its epic story, which is told from the perspective of multiple characters around the world, finally started coming together by the end of season 2. The show was renewed for a third season last year. Here's how Apple describes what to expect when the show returns: In season 3, those perspectives collide for the first time, as the series' main characters are brought together to work as a team on a critical mission to infiltrate the alien mothership. The ultimate apex aliens have finally emerged, rapidly spreading their deadly tendrils across our planet. It will take all our heroes working together, using all their experience and expertise, to save our species. New relationships are formed, old relationship are challenged and even shattered, as our international cast of characters must become a team before it's too late. Naturally, with this kind of premise, much of the main cast is returning, including Golshifteh Farahani, Shamier Anderson, India Brown, Shane Zaza, Enver Gjokaj, and Shioli Kutsuna (fresh off a starring role in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach). The news comes as Apple's foray into sci-fi shows few signs of letting up. In addition to the imminent return of Invasion, the existential comedy Murderbot is currently streaming, while season 3 of Foundation is set to premiere on July 11th. Meanwhile, yesterday Apple confirmed that production on its Neuromancer adaptation was underway.

BBC Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox reveals she tracks her children when they're apart

BBC Radio 2's Sara Cox has revealed she tracks her children using Apple's Find My Friends feature when they're apart. The 50-year-old broadcaster shares three teenage children, Renee, Lola and Isaac with her husband Ben Cyzer and has a daughter with her ex-husband, DJ Jon Carter, who she separated from in 2006. Speaking to Jessie and Lennie Ware on their Table Manners podcast, Cox said: 'I just do the usual Apple one. You can see where the kids are.' Apple released Find My Friends, which allows users to share their location with specific people and locate those who share their location with them using GPS and Wi-Fi in 2011. The app is most commonly used as a safety precaution and in 2017 aided a man to be rescued after he became stuck on a mountain. However, Cox admitted she was glad her own mother wasn't able to track her when she was young. 'My mum would have been like 'Why is Sara on her way to Blackpool,' the presenter, who grew up in Bolton, said. 'I went to Blackpool when I really wasn't supposed to be,' she said. 'I'd get a lift with some random lads in their XR2s [Ford Fiesta cars].' Some parents take tracking their children a step further, with Mike and Zara Tindall keeping tabs using Apple's £35 AirTag tracking device. In 2021, Apple launched AirTags to help iPhone users track the exact location of a lost item, such as luggage and keys. The small, circular device can be tracked from Apple's Find My app. The Independent's Charlotte Cripps weighed in on the child-tracking debate, saying she wanted to AirTag her children until they were 18. 'Is it teaching children to feel unsafe in the world and infringing on their privacy? Not in my case. 'My children feel protected knowing I'm keeping a close eye on them, and they are not at an age where they can go out without adult truth is, I'd prefer to be safe than sorry,' she wrote. 'I know I can't control what happens to my children when I'm not there– but at least there's great comfort in knowing exactly where they are.'
