Bhubaneswar: To enhance public health services, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) plans to hire a reputed medical service provider to operate a newly-established wellness centre at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Bus Terminal (BSABT) in Baramunda.
The wellness centre will provide free medical treatment to a wide range of users, including passengers, drivers, conductors and other staff members. The centre, which is part of BDA's broader strategy to improve public amenities, will also offer free medical consultations.
However, for further treatment, patients will be referred to appropriate hospitals or clinics. The centre is designed to cater to the immediate medical needs of individuals at the terminal, ensuring that help is readily available in case of emergencies or health concerns.
BSABT manager Itikanta Mohapatra said the basic infrastructure for the centre is already in place and the selected healthcare service provider will be responsible for deploying the necessary medical professionals and equipment to ensure it operates efficiently.
"The wellness centre will be a 'free of cost' facility for drivers, conductors, porters, commuters, passengers and visitors who require medical help at the BSABT.

The service provider will be selected through a competitive bidding process to ensure transparency in selection," said Mohapatra.
He said in addition to medical services, the service provider will also be allowed to operate a retail pharmacy counter at the centre. "This is expected to enhance the convenience for users, who may need to purchase medications or health-related products," Mohapatra said.
BDA outlined specific requirements for the operation of the wellness centre.
It will be staffed by one doctor working in two shifts, from 9am to 1:30pm and from 3pm to 6pm. Additionally, there will be two teams, each comprising one nurse and one support staff. They will be working in shifts from 7am to 2pm and from 2pm to 9pm, respectively.
The centre will also be equipped with essential medical equipment, including two beds, a cardiac monitor, respiratory and feeding equipment, a comprehensive first-aid kit, a stretcher and a wheelchair.
Passengers have welcomed the move. "The bus terminal is designed with the highest standards just like an airport. I think this will be the first bus terminal to offer medical services," said Chittaranjan Mohanty, a passenger.

Initially, the HDMC responded positively to the plan. However, the state govt stipulated that it could only allocate funds for upgrading the hospital, if it was officially transferred to the health department. HDMC is not agreeing to this condition. Former mayor Ramanna Badiger, during whose tenure the proposal was first discussed, emphasised that while the HDMC supported the redevelopment, it was unwilling to hand over the ownership to the health department. "If the hospital is transferred, the corporation loses its property rights and administrative control. Instead, we urge the govt to take the hospital on lease and carry out the upgrade," he said. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali confirmed that a proposal regarding the hospital's redevelopment was under review. "It will be presented before the HDMC general body. Based on the House's decision, the proposal will be forwarded to the state govt," he said. Currently, the hospital is operating with just three doctors and three nurses. According to staff members, over 120 pregnant women visit the hospital every day for check-ups. If it is to be upgraded into a full-fledged maternity center, staff strength needs to be increased by at least five-fold. With the matter now in the hands of the new mayor Jyothi Patil who hails from Dharwad, all eyes are on HDMC.

New Delhi: In a major boost to kidney care services, Delhi govt has added 150 haemodialysis machines across six govt hospitals under its public-private partnership dialysis project. Burari Hospital received the largest share with 55 machines, officials said. The expansion is part of the city's ongoing efforts to strengthen free dialysis facilities for patients with end-stage kidney conditions. In Jan, 150 machines were operationalised across 10 hospitals—90 under Prime Minister National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) and 60 via the PPP model. Delhi now has 300 dialysis machines in 16 govt hospitals, aimed at improving access, cutting waiting times and supporting underprivileged patients. "Free dialysis is a critical lifeline. By expanding capacity, we aim to reduce delays and ensure equitable kidney care," said a senior health official.
