Pasifika Sipoti in brief for 15 July
Manu Samoa got their Pacific Nations Cup campaign back on track. Photo: World Rugby Manu Samoa rugby team head coach Lemalu Tusiata Pisi says he is working with players who are in the squad for Friday's one-off Test match against Scotland in Auckland. Lemalu, a former Manu Samoa captain, will be missing a number of top players who have club commitments. The current squad will also prepare for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup series in August, which will also double as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The Samoans meet Scotland at Eden Park, the game scheduled to kick off at 8.05pm on Friday. Two Flying Fijian players have been named in the combined First Nations and Pasifika squad to face the British and Irish Lions next Tuesday in Melbourne. Prop Mesake Doge and lock Mesake Vocevoce are part of the first First Nations and Pasifika team to meet the touring side. The two were part of the Fijian team that lost to the Wallabies two weekends ago in Sydney and defeated Scotland in Suva last Saturday. The combined First Nations and Pasifika team will be coached by former Wallaby Toutai Kefu. The four semi-finalists in the OFC Women's Nations Cup 2025 have been confirmed, following the completion of pool matches at the weekend. Defending champions Papua New Guinea will meet hosts Fiji in the first semi-final in Suva on Wednesday afternoon. The second match will see Solomon Islands take on Samoa later that evening. Meanwhile, Tonga have claimed seventh position after they defeated Cook Islands 1-0 in the seventh and eighth place play-off Monday. Fiji will host the ICC Women's T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier in September. Matches will be held in Suva and will feature Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji and the Philippines. Fiji is pooled with Indonesia, Cook Islands and Vanuatu. The second pool has PNG, Japan, Samoa and the Philippines pit against each other. The Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league lost 46-30 to the Central Queensland Capras on Saturday, sending the team out of the top eight in the Hostplus Cup competition. Needing a win to keep their hopes of a play-off berth alive, the Kumuls were left second best as the Capras took control of the game at the end. Capras led 30-8 at halftime.

Poida's Poise Secures Vanuatu Fifth Place At OFC Women's Nations Cup 2025
Having beaten hosts Fiji in their final group game and only narrowly missing out on the semi-finals, Vanuatu came into tonight's Fifth place play-off with momentum on their side. Vanuatu had the ball in the back of the net in the sixth minute, but the goal was disallowed after the ball was judged to have been kicked out of the hands of Tahitian goalkeeper Camille Andre, Leimata Simon bearing down on goal but only able to hit at Andre, then the crossbar, with the rebound bundled by Angelina Poida over the line via the goalkeeper's grasp. Undeterred, Vanuatu tried again, with Simon the target. The sharpshooter looking to continue her record of scoring in every appearance this tournament, and the Tahiti defence content to absorb the pressure and try to catch Vanuatu out on a quick counterattack. Some individual brilliance and flair from Simon almost paid off for the striker, as she attempted to juggle past Julienne Naomi and win a free kick in the process, but she couldn't get the ball back down quick enough to challenge Andre. But Vanuatu's breakthrough came in a moment of magic from Poida in the 28th minute. Latching onto to a long ball from Willine Viti on the right, her first touch deftly took her away from a scrambling Andre, giving her time to set up for an emphatic finish for her second. Vanuatu searched for a second goal, dominating possession and time in Tahiti's half, with the excellent Rita Solomon setting the tempo from midfield. But they were frustrated by Tahiti's compacted defence, which was well-marshalled by Gwendoline Fournier. Tahiti came agonizingly close to snatching a dramatic equalizer deep in added time when a Tahitian corner was only cleared as far as Kohai Mai, who quickly unleashed a shot goalwards, but Vanuatu's Amelia Reddy was level to it, securing her third clean sheet of the competition, Vanuatu's third win, and their best-ever finish in the OFC Women's Nations Cup.

Flying Fijians topple Scotland in front of home crowd
Fiji's Jiuta Wainiqolo (L) runs the ball towards the try line during the rugby Test match between Fiji and Scotland at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on July 12, 2025. Photo: AFP / Josua Buredua Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne says the 29-14 win against Scotland on Saturday was a result of hard work. Byrne made the comments after the one-off Test match at the National Stadium in Suva. With over 10,000 fans in attendance, including Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji turned the pressure on midway into the first half and continued that in the second spell to claim the win and avenge last year's loss in Scotland. "Really pleased for our players," the former Scotland assistant coach said. "The amount of work they put in in such a short period of time and they got the result today." Captain Tevita Ikanivere paid tribute to the players, who fought until the last whistle to secure the win. He said the disappointing three points loss to the Wallabies the weekend before was something that the team had at the back of their mind, as they took on the touring Scottish side at Laucala. "Thank the brothers for giving their all today," he said. "Hard fought battle. I thank the Scottish team for coming down to Fiji, the only Tier One nation that has come down to play us." Scotland coach Gregory Townsend said the Fijians were better and he was disappointed for the loss. "Fiji deserved to win. Disappointed for the overall performance, disappointed that we didn't work on the good start we had." Scotland had taken an early lead but they were down 15-7 at halftime. Fullback Kyle Rowe crossed the Fiji tryline three minutes into the game, and after messing up near the visitors' tryline the Fijians managed to get points on the board through the boots of flyhalf Caleb Muntz. Skipper Ikanivere added more points through a try from a rare driving maul in the 36th minute, before winger Kalaveti Ravouravou finished off a backline movement when he ran untouched from a Salesi Rayasi pass. In the second half, Scotland scored first again, through inside centre Tom Jordan, after the visitors had broken through midfield and quick recycling of the ball saw Jordan go over. France-based Jiuta Wainiqolo then broke through to score in the 60th minute, having received and inside pass from Muntz. Then a penalty try was awarded to the Fijians after Scottish winger Darcy Graham was ruled offside, and interfering with the ball, when the Fijian backline had spun the ball wide, with two players on the outside two metres from the tryline. Graham was red carded, having received an earlier yellow card in the game, and Scotland were on the receiving end of a penalty try to their hosts. And as the last seconds ticked away the Fijians were stopped short again, number eight Elia Canakaivata held up on the line as he bulldozed his way over. A highlight of the day's program was the recognition of former Flying Fijians who had played against Scotland in 1997. That included Joeli Veitayaki and Filipe Rayasi, whose sons Haeriet Hetit and Salesi Rayasi played for Fiji yesterday. Hetit is Veitayaki's son while Salesi is Filipe's son. The Flying Fijians will now prepare for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup while Scotland will meet Manu Samoa at Eden Park on Friday night.
