Hannah Yeoh wins defamation suit, Kamarul Zaman ordered to pay RM400,000 in damages
The decision was delivered by Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman, who allowed Hannah's claim after finding no merit in the defendant's submission that she lacked locus standi to initiate the suit.
The defamation suit, filed in 2022, arose from two Facebook posts made by Kamarul Zaman between May 10 and May 17, 2017, in which he alleged that Hannah had a proselytising agenda and was using her political platform to advance Christianity.
He also cited her autobiography, Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey, as evidence of her purported Christian agenda, further alleging that she sought to turn Malaysia into a Christian nation.
In his statement of defence, Kamarul Zaman denied that the posts were defamatory and asserted that his statements were justified.

Samantha, however, pleaded for leniency, requesting the minimum fine as her clients had repented and promised to change. "Mohd Hanafi suffers from a brain condition and underwent head surgery in 2016. He is now dependent on his sister for support. "Muhammad Al Azamuddin is a first-year university student, while Mohamad Syahmi Firas is a final-year polytechnic student. "They have all promised not to repeat this offence. Their families have also vowed to guide them onto the right path from now on," she said. Failure to pay the fine will result in a six-month jail term. It was previously reported that police raided a gathering at a bungalow on Jalan Kemumin, believed to have been attended by nearly 100 men. The raid, conducted based on intelligence and public information, led to the arrest of 20 men and the seizure of hundreds of condoms and HIV medication.

The trio were charged with possessing the content on their phones in a house on Jalan Kemumin, Kampung Belacang, Kota Baru on June 18. Charges were filed under Section 292 of Penal Code, which brings a maximum jail term of three years, or a fine, or both, if convicted. The trio were released after paying the fines. This comes after police raided a bungalow in Kemumin, Kota Baru, where a "gay sex party" supposedly took place. The raid sparked controversy after several non-governmental organisations and individuals denied that any illicit activities took place. In a joint statement, Suaram, the Women's Aid Organisation, Parti Sosialis Malaysia and Amnesty International Malaysia refuted claims of immoral conduct, stating that "the participants attended to get information and undergo sexual health tests."
