Yale commit Selma Larbi returns for Neuqua Valley, which is winning too. ‘Definitely good to have her back.'

Chicago Tribune18-04-2025
Selma Larbi's family heritage spans the Atlantic Ocean, and the smile she frequently flashes can seem just as wide.
The Neuqua Valley senior forward is known for her sunny disposition as well as her prodigious talent on the field.
The Wildcats missed both when Larbi opted to play club last year after shining on the varsity team as a freshman and sophomore. But happy times are here again.
'It's definitely a lot of fun, and it's definitely good to have her back,' Neuqua Valley junior forward Alexis May said. 'She's always creating chances, and it's just good to have a goal scorer back.'
Larbi, a Yale commit, has produced four goals and two assists in her first eight games, spurring the Wildcats (7-1) to a surprising start. May, who scored twice during Neuqua Valley's 5-0 victory over East Aurora in Naperville on Thursday, said the team has benefited from Larbi's leadership.
'She always keeps the vibes up, and even if we're down, she's always pushing us to get back into the game,' May said. 'She always keeps the energy going.'
That's been vital for a young team. Ten of the 20 players on the roster are freshmen or sophomores. Neuqua Valley coach Arnoldo Gonzalez said Larbi's efforts have helped bend the learning curve in the team's favor.
'That's the thing — her approach to the game,' Gonzalez said. 'She's a great student of the game because she's always looking to learn. She's always looking to improve what we can do.
'She got voted as captain by her peers, and that speaks volumes. So she's a great asset because if you're a good individual, most likely you're a good individual on the pitch as well and a great teammate, and they see that.'
Larbi credits her parents, Michael and Stella, for her upbeat personality.
'I think my parents just raised me to always find the good in situations, even when it's tough,' she said. 'When tough things happen, you learn life lessons from it, so just always learn something from the things that may not always look good.
'There's always good in life and reason to smile.'
Larbi's parents are from Ghana, where her father ran track and played soccer. She has many relatives in Ghana and has visited them often.
'My dad put me in soccer when I was 4 years old,' Larbi said. 'Like in most African countries, soccer is the only thing in Ghana. It's just huge. I did other sports, but I kind of just fell in love with that.'
Larbi has developed a close bond with her teammates.
'Last year, we lacked a forward, so I'm glad that she's back,' Gonzalez said. 'She does add to the attack. She does add to keeping possession of the ball. She holds the ball well, and I think that gives everyone confidence.'
It shows. The Wildcats, who last had a winning record in 2019, did not win more than seven games in any of the past three years.
They've already reached that total this season, which includes a stunning 2-1 upset win against Naperville Central in the DuPage Valley Conference opener on April 8. Larbi scored the game-winner that day off an assist from May.
'We've just really focused on the fundamentals and sticking to our game plan,' May said. 'We've really been working on finishing, and obviously that's come into play this year because we've been getting goals and we've been competing really well.'
Larbi also does well in the classroom. She has a 3.9 unweighted GPA and said her parents instilled a work ethic and love of learning.
'I would say my parents are really smart,' she said. 'But they worked hard for their grades, and I think that kind of inspired me to also work hard for my grades and study hard.'
Larbi is passing that ethos down to her younger teammates.
'Being a captain is really fun, to just step into that leadership role,' she said. 'I'm really excited to kind of set an example for the lowerclassmen.
'As a team, I think we're doing really, really well. I think it's our chemistry that is really better this year, and because of that chemistry we're able to work off of each other a lot more compared to the other years.'

Dodgers trade rumors: Will L.A. add bullpen depth?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the middle of several trade rumors as the deadline approaches. Any trades involving players on the 40-man roster must be completed by 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 31. MLB teams can still place or claim players off waivers, but trades will no longer be allowed. The Dodgers always have high expectations and this year have a championship to defend, adding to the likelihood the team makes a move before the deadline. The bullpen should be addressed. It's one of the team's biggest needs at the moment, considering the number of pitchers on the injury report. Who could the Dodgers bring in at the trade deadline? With a glaring need to add depth in the bullpen again, the Dodgers will likely be buyers. USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale provided some options to consider. Among them: Jhoan Duran of the Minnesota Twins and Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians. Duran has been a solid reliever this season with a 1.62 ERA. Clase has once again been one of the better relief pitchers this season and if the right offer comes along, Cleveland might be willing to part ways with him. ESPN's Jeff Passan believes Cade Smith of the Guardians could be a good fit for the Dodgers' needs. Passan writes: 'The 26-year-old right-hander's 3.21 ERA is misleading; he has struck out 63 in 42 innings and given up only two home runs. He is a throwback, hurling almost 70% fastballs and not just getting away with it but thriving because of it. And with the L.A. bullpen full of unknowns, he is the (type of player) manager Dave Roberts can deploy at any point in the game with great efficacy. Bonus: He comes with an additional four years of club control.' Who could the Dodgers move at the trade deadline? The Dodgers could move on from pitcher Dustin May, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. May could be moved in an attempt to address other areas of need, but he is expected to become an unrestricted free agent, which could impact how he is viewed on the market. He allowed seven runs in 4⅔ innings pitched during his last start on July 11, an 8-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants. He's started 17 of the 18 games he's played in and has a 6-6 record this season. He's allowed 56 runs and 92 hits while striking out 92 in 99 innings pitched. If he isn't moved, May could be used as a reliever to finish out the season. His last outing came in relief of Shohei Ohtani, pitching 4⅔ scoreless innings. It was his first relief appearance since 2020. The Boston Red Sox could have interest in catcher Dalton Rushing, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive. Boston could include shortstop Franklin Arias and left-handed pitcher Brandon Clarke in a potential deal. Arias, a 19-year-old Venezuelan, is currently listed as the Red Sox's top prospect. Clarke is ranked as the fourth-best prospect in Boston's system.

Top 25 Kentucky football players this century: Number 16

The countdown of the top 25 Kentucky football players of this century continues on. Number 17 was former Wildcats safety Mike Edwards, who went on to become a Super Bowl champion. Up next, at number 16 is former Kentucky linebacker Micah Johnson. Johnson was one of the nation's top linebacker recruits out of high school, and chose the Wildcats over some major programs. He broke into the rotation immediately, playing in all 13 games as a Freshman, gaining All-Freshman honors, then seeing an increase in playing time as a Sophomore, showing just what he could do. In his third season in Lexington, he broke out in a big way. He totaled 93 tackles, including 13 for a loss. He also had 2.5 sacks and forced a fumble earning a first-team All-SEC nod. As a Senior, Johnson was terrific once again, and was a second-team All-SEC player. He recorded 105 tackles with one sack and seven tackles for a loss. Johnson was an integral piece to Kentucky's defense during his time there. He was a two-time All-SEC performer who, though he didn't find NFL success, was one of the great Wildcats linebackers.
