Han Kang's first post-Nobel book tops bestseller list
Major bookstore chain Kyobo Book Center said Friday that the book, titled "Light and Thread," claimed the No. 1 spot on its bestseller list for the last week of April.
Han's first publication since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature last year, the book contains a total of 12 writings, including five poems and several new prose pieces.
Three of the writings stem from the Nobel Prize in Literature award events last December: the full text of the laureate lecture "Light and Thread," delivered at the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm; the acceptance speech "Even In the Darkest Night" given at the subsequent banquet; and the message "A Small Teacup," left upon donating a teacup to the Nobel Prize Museum.
Among the new prose pieces, "North-facing Garden" describes the garden she tended at her first fully-owned home bought in 2019, while "Garden Diary" chronicles the garden's plant life over two years starting in 2021.
The book, which was released last Wednesday, has drawn particularly strong interest from female readers, who made up 69.7 percent of its audience, according to Kyobo. (Yonhap)

Police transfers DUI case involving comedian Lee Kyung-kyu to prosecution
Police said Wednesday it has sent veteran comedian Lee Kyung-kyu to the prosecution on charges of driving under the influence of drugs last month without issuing a detention request against him. Lee is accused of violating the Road Traffic Act by driving someone else's vehicle, the same model as his, under the influence of panic disorder drugs on June 8 in southern Seoul after a valet mistakenly gave him the wrong car. Police arrived at the scene following a report of a car theft, and conducted a preliminary drug test on Lee, which reportedly returned a positive result. A subsequent laboratory drug test also came back positive, according to the police. Last Tuesday, Lee appeared for questioning at the Seoul Gangnam Police Station and admitted to driving under the influence, saying he had not known he must not drive after taking medication prescribed for panic disorder. Lee's agency has said Lee has been suffering from a panic disorder for nearly 10 years and on the day of the incident, he drove to go to a hospital after taking medication for his symptoms. Under the Road Traffic Act, driving while impaired under the influence of drugs, including those prescribed for medical reasons, is prohibited. The 64-year-old seasoned comedian is known for hosting popular TV shows over decades, including "Healing Camp." (Yonhap)

Think your Korean handwriting is good? Give Kyobo's contest a shot
11th Handwriting Contest for Foreign Nationals open through Aug. 17 Kyobo Book Center is inviting Korea's international community to put their Korean handwriting to the test. The 11th Handwriting Contest for Foreign Nationals is now open, offering participants a chance to showcase their Korean handwriting skills and celebrate the charm of the language — one beautifully written sentence at a time. The contest encourages participants to write out either a favorite line from a Korean book or lyrics from their favorite K-pop song. Submissions must be received by Aug. 17. The contest is open to all foreign nationals residing in Korea. Application forms are available at any Kyobo Book Center location. Participants may also download the form from the official website, then upload a photo of their handwritten entry, or submit it by post or email. Winners will be announced on Sept. 3, with an awards ceremony scheduled for Oct. 17. One grand prize winner will receive a Kyobo gift certificate worth 1 million won ($738), and three second-place winners will each receive gift certificates worth 200,000 won. 'Handwriting is a way of conveying the heart beyond language,' a Kyobo official said. 'We hope this contest offers foreign participants a meaningful way to experience Korean culture up close and to rediscover the value of handwriting.'

Krafton to acquire Japan's ADK Group for W710b
Korean game developer eyes intellectual property expansion amid growing content market Krafton has decided to invest about 710.3 billion won ($521.3 million) to acquire Japan's ADK Group as the Korean game developer looks to expand its presence in the global content industry. According to Krafton, its board of directors on Tuesday approved the takeover of BCJ-31 -- a holding company under Bain Capital Japan and the parent company of ADK Holdings -- which owns major affiliates of ADK Group such as ADK Market Solutions, ADK Creative One and AKD Emotions. Considered one of the three most influential advertising agencies in Japan, ADK Group has taken part in producing over 300 animation products. ADK Group's annual transaction volume reached $2.4 billion as of last year, according to Krafton. The takeover of the Japanese company came as the Korean game developer has been searching for chances to expand its game-centered intellectual properties. 'Based on a deep understanding of the Japanese content industry, ADK is a partner with great expertise and capabilities that covers animation planning and production, advertising and marketing, and media operation,' said Kim Chang-han, CEO of Krafton. 'Through cooperation with ADK, Krafton will continue to explore various common grounds between game and animation and combine each company's strengths to try to create new opportunities in the global content industry together.'
