Kylian Mbappe dedicates stunning scissor-kick to Diogo Jota as Real Madrid survive late scare to beat Borussia Dortmund in thriller after THREE goals in added time- and set up crunch semi-final clash with PSG

Daily Mail9 hours ago
Kylian Mbappe scored an acrobatic scissor-kick to set up a Club World Cup semi-final showdown with his old employers Paris Saint-Germain and dedicated his celebration to the late Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
Mbappe, who recently returned from acute gastroenteritis, was brought on as a substitute in the 67th minute after Xabi Alonso again opted to start one of Real Madrid 's own in Gonzalo Garcia instead.
Real were already leading 2-0 when Mbappe was introduced, but Borussia Dortmund got a goal back in stoppage time through Maximilian Beier and that kickstarted a frantic finale at the MetLife Stadium.
Mbappe's volley from Arda Guler's cross – and tribute to Jota in creating the number 20 with his fingers towards the cameras – followed as it appeared Real were indeed cruising through.
However, while we were all watching the replays on the big screen, Dortmund were awarded a penalty and Real were shown a straight red card. Dean Huijsen had pulled back Serhou Guirassy when he was through on goal. Guirassy stepped up himself and scored to make it 3-2.
Seconds later, Thibaut Courtois prevented this game from going to extra time with perhaps the save of the Club World Cup, denying Marcel Sabitzer with a remarkable stop while diving down to his right-hand side in the 10th minute of stoppage time.
With PSG beating Bayern Munich earlier in the day, we will now see a semi-final between the 2025 Champions League winners versus Real, the 15-time conquerers of that European competition. Chelsea will face Fluminense in the other semi.
This was only Mbappe's second appearance of the Club World Cup, having also been a substitute versus Juventus in the last 16. In his absence, and that of Endrick, Gonzalo Garcia has stepped up and then some.
The 21-year-old Madrid-born forward – linked with Chelsea, of course – scored his fourth goal in five games in the United States to give Real the lead over Dortmund here. It was so simple, too, as he found the space he needed to tap in Guler's cross.
In scoring, he took himself to the top of the Golden Boot leaderboard, level with Angel Di Maria of Benfica and Marcos Leonardo of Al-Hilal. This follows on from him scoring 25 goals in 36 games for Real Madrid Castilla – their reserve side – over the last season alongside the odd senior appearance. The MetLife Stadium's crowd was 90 per cent in support of Real and they went wild upon their side taking the lead in the 10th minute.
It was 2-0 after 20 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold underlapped and sprinted on to a ball in behind. His cross evaded every man in yellow in the box as it trickled to the arriving Fran Garcia, who scored from eight yards.
There was also Jude Bellingham for Real, but no Jobe for Dortmund, owing to the younger brother being suspended. The older sibling should have added a third for Real after a gorgeous dummy by Vinicius Junior left him with only Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to beat, but he dragged wide with his weaker foot.
Like Bellingham, Vinicius then squandered his own opportunity to make it three when Real launched into a lightning counter-attack from a Dortmund corner. Kobel was still backtracking towards his box when Vinicius tried but failed to execute a lob. Really, he should have scored.
In the 62nd minute, Aurelien Tchouameni curled one from 25 yards. Kobel was rooted, and then grateful when the ball crashed back off his crossbar.
Mbappe was introduced after 67 minutes – to a loud ovation from the 76,611 supporters in attendance – alongside Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos. Vinicius, Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold were replaced in that triple substitution.
Amid five minutes of stoppage time, Dortmund got a goal back through Beier's strike. Moments later, Real restored their two-goal lead with Mbappe scoring a scissor-kick at the back post from Guler's cross.
Immediately from the restart, Dortmund were awarded a penalty as Huijsen fouled Guirassy, who converted to make it 3-2 as Real were reduced to 10 men.
At the very end, Courtois produced a stupendous save, denying Sabitzer with remarkable reactions. After a breathless finish, it is Real who will face PSG in the semis.

Estêvão shows Chelsea he can form dangerous partnership with Palmer

The good news for Chelsea is that Cole Palmer and Estêvão Willian will be on the same team when they next share a pitch. Even better, it seems two of the most gifted young forwards around already have a connection. They were on opposite sides in Philadelphia on Friday night but friends when it was over, sharing a warm embrace after Chelsea's victory over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup, swapping shirts and perhaps thinking about how much fun they are going to have at the expense of opposition defences when they line up together next season. It was a heartwarming sight. Palmer offered a reminder that he remains the main man at Chelsea, performing with craft and intelligence during a first half in which he opened the scoring in smooth fashion, but Estêvão vied for centre stage on his final appearance for Palmeiras. It was an extraordinary performance given the context. Anticipation has been building ever since Chelsea agreed a £52m fee with Palmeiras for Estêvão in May 2024. The 18-year-old has remained on an upward trajectory after staying with Palmeiras for one more season, but any hopes of keeping the hype machine from going into overdrive with a player regarded as the best Brazilian youth product of his generation had disappeared long before he found himself trying to knock his future employers out of the Club World Cup. The pressure on Estêvão was extreme. He has delivered a string of wonderful goals and performances for Palmeiras over the past 12 months but he has been criticised by the Brazilian media during his time in the US. Abel Ferreira, the charismatic Palmeiras manager, has had to leap to the youngster's defence. There have been some tense press conferences. Nonetheless it was only human nature to wonder if Estêvão was capable of performing against Chelsea. Would his heart really be in it? Would he hold back? Would he be too desperate to impress? Now, of course, the challenge will be keeping expectations at realistic levels when Estêvão arrives in England. He has been called Messinho (Little Messi) because of his dribbling ability but is determined to follow his own path. This kid is fearless. Questions about whether he will be able to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League are standard. Against Chelsea, there could be no better taste of what defenders in England are like than by being marked by Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard is tenacious, niggly, and very good at his job. It was striking to watch him kick lumps out of Estêvão during the first half. It was as if Cucurella was trying to see if the kid was made of the right stuff. The response was resounding. Estêvão kept looking for the ball and kept trying to make things happen. At one point he darted in from the right, surging across the grass, Cucurella left desperately trying to cling on to his shirt. It was easy to imagine Cucurella going back into the dressing room after full time and telling his teammates that they won't have to worry about whether that slight, spindly kid on the Palmeiras right will be able to do it on a wet, windy Tuesday night in Stoke. Only, the rest of Chelsea's players had already seen it for themselves. It was Estêvão who dragged Palmeiras into the contest, spinning into space in the 53rd minute and catching Robert Sánchez out by shooting from the tightest of angles. The ball flew past a startled Sánchez, who could not even be blamed for being beaten at his near post, and when it went in there was no holding back from Estêvão as he celebrated. Palmeiras could not quite get the job done, though. Afterwards the mood was bittersweet. Named the player of the match, Estêvão was obliged to speak to the media. He sat next to Ferreira and thanked the man who treats him as a son. Ferreira was tender, whispering advice to Estêvão whenever he seemed unsure what to say. 'I love this guy so much,' Estêvão said. 'I thank God that Abel and Palmeiras are in my life.' Ferreira, ignoring the pain of losing to a late own goal, returned the praise. He spoke of Estêvão's talent but also described him as an amazing person. The Portuguese admitted that he was unsure if Estêvão was big enough when he was promoted to the first team, only for those doubts to go away soon enough. 'He looks slim, but he is strong,' Ferreira said. 'I told Estêvão: 'We are excited for you to join,' but he didn't understand a single word I said,' Palmer offered. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion That nod towards the language barrier was a reminder that Estêvão must be given time to settle in England. 'Take care of him,' Ferreira said, sounding a lot like Sven-Göran Eriksson urging the English media to protect Wayne Rooney in 2006. 'It's the first time he will leave his country. In England the sun appears two or three times a year and the night comes early but Chelsea have conditions to support him.' It is good that there is no pressure on Enzo Maresca to rush Estêvão. Chelsea have plenty of attacking options and know that leaving South America will not be easy. Even so, it is telling that there is no plan to send Estêvão out on loan. Chelsea know they have a special talent on their hands. No wonder they cannot wait to see Estêvão and Palmer together.

Alexander-Arnold said: 'No matter how difficult it was and how difficult it is, I still have a job to do do. 'He was there with me' 'As hard as it was, I had to try to push it to the back of my mind. It was difficult, I'm not going to lie about that. I've done it in honour of my close friend. 'That's what I'm sure he would have wanted me to do and we would have had a laugh and a joke about the assist. 'That was in some way in memory of him. He was there with me today I'm sure.' Alexander-Arnold bravely decided to speak in public about Jota after previously paying tribute via social media. Visibly emotional, the England star told DAZN: 'First and foremost I want to send my condolences, my love, my thoughts and prayers to the family of a close friend of mine. 'It's been very emotional' 'It's been very very difficult for me and all the ones that knew him - not just team-mates, friends and family, but the footballing world. Jude Bellingham's new £7m DOUBLE pad includes ‘personal barbershop & trophy room' – but tiny village has a dark side

The England hero is building a pad for himself and one for his parents Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FOOTY star Jude Bellingham is building a luxury home in the same leafy village as THREE Premier League players – complete with his own trophy room and barbershop, it is claimed. The England and Real Madrid midfielder is also building a house next door for his parents in Barnt Green, near Birmingham - but there's a dark side to the village, The Sun can reveal. The exclusive Worcestershire village is fast beginning to rival Cheshire's Alderley Edge, where some oil the biggest names in football, including David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland have lived. But neighbours say there's a growing crime problem that they're blaming on the footy stars' presence, with one telling us he's had to have so much security installed his home looks like Fort Knox. Bellingham, who turned 22 last month, bought the two-acre plot in Barnt Green a year ago and building work on the two detached properties where he and his parents will live is almost complete. The properties are surrounded by other multimillion pound homes in the quiet tree-lined street less than a mile from the centre of Barn Green village. Although locals enjoy catching a glimpse of the superstar footballers, they say their arrival in the village, as well as numerous wealthy businessmen including Gym Shark founder Ben Francis and singer Jamelia, has led to an alarming spate of burglaries in recent months. One local said there is now a burglary almost every week in the area, including the theft of a luxury sports car from the driveway of one of Bellingham's neighbours late last month. The local, who asked not to be named, said: 'It is becoming a real problem now. There's a burglary almost every week , but the perpetrators are never caught. 'I've seen the burglars myself. I was walking along the street a few weeks ago and two men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas shot past me. Jude Bellingham reveals rivalry with brother Jobe at Club World Cup in cheeky interview "They were legging it at speed from one of the houses here that they's obviously been robbing from. One of them had like a thick postbag in his hand as they ran past. It was terrifying 'It is becoming such a regular thing here now but I don't understand why the cops aren't doing more to try and find the perpetrators. You never see a police car patrolling these streets around here. 'I've had to do a few things to increase our security arrangements at my house. I've got the latest alarms and CCTV and I've just bought two Rottweilers to help protect me. It's like Fort Knox at my place now and I fear it needs to be. Anonymous Barnt Green resident "There is a great sense of togetherness in the community and we have the best of everything. We're only a few miles from the centre of Birmingham, yet we live in this beautiful village in the countryside. 'I can certainly understand why these footballers want to live here too. 'However, I think the escalation in crime is a direct result of word going around that there are a lot of footballers and other high-value individuals living here." Owner David Clifford, 64, says Watkins likes to fire up his performances with pepperoni pizza. Mr Clifford said: 'Ollie is a regular customer and he is always friendly and very down-to-earth. He comes in with his family. Sometimes he'll eat in, or on the terrace outside, but often he'll grab a takeaway. 'He's always nice to the staff and happy to pose for a selfie with locals. He's just a great guy. 'We've also had Jack Grealish in a few times, but not so much since he moved to Man City. "Matty Cash is a another regular and, again, a lovely bloke. They are all heroes to people around here and we're super proud of them.' Across the road, at Warwick's butchers, owner Warwick Savage, 53, revealed that before he moved to Man City, the then-Aston Villa star Grealish used to visit his shop every week to buy dozens of local Lashford sausages. Mr Clifford, himself a Liverpool fan, said: 'Good old Jackie must have been living on the bloody things, he was buying so many. 'Not that I blame him – they're made in Birmingham and they're probably the best sausages in the world. If you haven't tried them already, you should. Everyone should. They are very meaty and there's no rubbish in them." Mr Savage also revealed he had been told by a source close to the building team hired to build Bellingham's properties that the Real Madrid star's new pad includes a trophy room and a barbershop-style room. Footballers' homes targeted by burglars High profile footballers have increasingly become targets for aggravated burglaries, in part down to when they'll be away easy to guess. Last December, Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish's Cheshire home was raided, with thieves stealing £1million in valuables while he was playing in a Premier League match. His partner Sasha Attwood and several family members were present. Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak's Northumberland home was also targeted last April, with thieves making off with £68,000 of jewellery and up to £10,000 cash. A court heard the player returned home around 10pm to find entry had been gained by smashing a glass door from the back of the property to the TV room. Isak's Brazilian teammate Joelinton's home has been broken into twice last year. He put out a statement on social media in November saying: "To anyone considering doing this: Please know that there is nothing valuable left!" His post came just a day after he shared several snaps of his family on holiday in Dubai. In 2022, former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's £3.5million mansion in Cheshire - which he shares with Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards - was raided while the couple and their baby were upstairs. The thieves cleared out jewellery and designer handbags. Sources said the raid has left them 'terrified' for their safety and 'heartbroken' over the haul taken. Geraint Jones, director of HNW private clients at Broadway Insurance, previously told the Insurance Times: 'High profile people, be it footballers or others in the public eye, are becoming more of a target. 'A lot of this comes back to how these individuals run their lives, particularly with regard to social media and the security they take on board.' Mr Savage said: 'He's even had a huge display cabinet built for all his trophies and medals. 'The idea of the barbershop is that he and his mates can hire a personal barber to go round and cut their hair. "Apparently, it's just like a high quality barbershop you'd find in the smartest streets. 'I also see Ollie Watkins parking up his black Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon outside his butcher shop, but sadly he's not come in here yet.' As previously reported, the new build will boast a basement area with a cinema, swimming pool, sauna and gym and an entertainment area complete with a bar. There will be a living space upstairs which includes a large kitchen, five ensuite bedrooms, two lounges and a snug. Meanwhile, a second, similarly designed five-bed property is being built by the same developer on the spot where the former house stood. Bellingham's development is reported to be worth a whopping £7million in total, reports MailOnline. Alan Mehan, 38, runs a Mediterranean restaurant, Cork and Crust, where several footballers, including Watkins and Cash are regular customers. He also runs an off licence opposite selling Havana cigars and £895-a-bottle Krug champagne, but adds the players never touch either. 16 Fergus Barlow works at the local off licence Credit: Roland Leon 16 Grealish was a regular in the village before his move to Man City Credit: Getty 16 Three Lions hero Ollie Watkins is also a neighbour Credit: PA 'They don't drink, from what I can see, but they often come to the restaurant with their families for a meal. 'Even though I'm a Wolves fan, they are always super-friendly to me and my staff. I'm always happy to see them because they are lovely people. 'They've always got time for the staff and they'll pose for photographs with them, as well as other customers.' His colleague, manager Fergus Barlow, 28, added: 'And when they've finished their meals, they'll always put their heads through the kitchen door and thank the chefs and pot washers. They've got good manners. 'Often, a few hours before they come in, they'll phone up to check we've got the kind of food they eat, which is usually lean meat and fish with pasta. 'They like their vegetables too. They look after their bodies and they are particular about what they eat because they have to stay healthy and they need good quality protein in their diet. 'They're just regular guys who have done well for themselves, but they have no airs and graces. "They're just decent people and we are always happy to see them here. They've got time for everybody but they know they can come here and not get too much hassle from the general public." 'No wonder footballers want to live here' Staff at local estate agents Oulsnam say Barnt Green is popular because of its rural vibe in a village just eight miles from Britain's second city, Birmingham. Prices for detached homes on their books range from £500 to £4m, while smart semis start at £400,000. The cheapest property they have for sale currently is a £165,000 two-be retirement apartment. A spokesperson for the agency said: 'This is a wonderful area. You've got every amenity you could wish for and good schools, state and private, nearby. 'There's even a sailing club here, as well as a good cricket club. There are exquisite cafes, bars and restaurants, independent shops and a country park right on the doorstep.
