Winning images of Travel Photographer of the Year 2024 capture beauty of world's landscapes and cultures

A girl staring into the distance, two Chinese coal miners joking during a break from work, and a Pallas cat lying in the snow in Mongolia are among the winners of the Travel Photographer of the Year 2024 competition.
Taken together, the remarkable portfolio of winning photos reveals 'an incredible visual journey around the world, capturing its breathtaking moods and colours,' said a statement released by the competition's organizers Sunday.
American photographer Piper Mackay won the overall prize for her photos that all share a distinctive hue, having been shot with an infrared light. This technique lends an ethereal quality to her portraits of African women as well as her photos of giraffes crossing grassy plains in Kenya.
Mackay said in the statement that 'this award completes my life's passion and work across Africa for more than two decades.' She added that her philosophy is to 'never let the photo dictate your experience, always let the experience dictate the photo.'
Judges sifted through more than 20,000 images submitted by photographers from more than 150 countries to crown Mackay the overall winner.
They rewarded other entries in individual categories too.
Mexican photographer Maricruz Sainz de Aja won the 'Faces, People, Cultures' category for her images depicting the life of the Wauga tribe in Papua New Guinea.
Meanwhile, the UK's Jenny Stock picked up first place in the 'Wildlife, Nature and Underwater' category for her photos portraying the cold, ruthless majesty of crocodiles in Cuba.
China's Raymond Zhang won the Young Travel Photographer of the Year award for his evocative photos of workers and trains at a Chinese coal mine, while 12-year-old Leonardo Murray won the under 14 category for capturing the abstract shapes of dunes in the Namib Desert.
All the winning photos can be viewed on the competition's website and at an exhibition at The Banbury Museum and Galleries near Oxford, United Kingdom, between March 29 and July 7. The exhibition will then travel to the United Arab Emirates and Changsha, China.

CEA's Broader Expansion Into Italy Opens a New Chapter of China-Italy Aviation Cooperation

MILAN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--China Eastern Airlines (CEA) held a promotional event in Milan, Italy on July 3, 2025, for its new direct Milan-Shanghai route. CEA Chairman Mr. Wang Zhiqing attended and addressed at the event. "This new route is not merely an aerial bridge connecting two great cities," said Mr. Wang. "It also embodies both Chinese and Italian people's aspirations for further exchanges and cooperation. We strive to provide convenient, efficient, and comfortable services and make every flight more enjoyable." During his visit to Italy, Mr. Wang had high-level meetings with key representatives from the Italian aviation industry. Among them were Mr. Salvatore Burrafato, President of GEStione Aeroporto Palermo S.p.A., Mr. Armando Brunini, CEO of Società Esercizi Aeroportuali S.p.A., and Mr. Luigi Battuello, CCO of Società Esercizi Aeroportuali S.p.A. The meetings focused on operational support for new routes, joint marketing campaigns, and collaborative backing for passenger and cargo transportation. Mr. Wang specially invited the Italian partners to attend the North Bund International Aviation Forum to be held in Shanghai this October, to lay out a blueprint for future China–Italy civil aviation cooperation. Apart from commercial cooperation, the trip also prioritizes cultural exchange. Mr. Wang met with Mr. Massimo Bray, Italian Coordinator of China-Italy Cultural Cooperation Mechanism and General Manager of the Treccani Institute. By common consent, they would collaboratively and innovatively integrate culture and aviation by hosting cultural exhibitions at airports and on board, developing unique cultural tourist routes, facilitating youth exchanges between the two nations, and offering professional support for cross-border transportation of valuable artworks. Then, they witnessed the signing of an MoU between CEA and Treccani Institute, marking a new stage in the collaboration between both bodies. CEA inaugurated two new direct flight routes between China and Italy on September 26, 2024, as part of their "Air Silk Road" expansion: Venice–Shanghai and Milan–Xi'an. Now, therefore, CEA operates five direct routes between China and Italy: from Rome, Milan, and Venice to Shanghai; Milan to Xi'an; and Rome to Wenzhou. The weekly two-way flights between China and Italy have been raised to 46, which has fostered greater economic, trade, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

Trump orders Interior to look at raising revenue at national parks

President Trump ordered the Department of the Interior to look at raising revenue at national parks by increasing entry fees for foreign tourists. Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to develop a 'strategy' to boost revenue and improve recreational experiences at national parks around the country by hiking entrance fees and recreation pass fees for foreign tourists. The White House said that by raising prices, national parks will become more affordable for American families. The order does not specify how much the prices would go up or when they would be implemented. The administration argued that additional revenue will 'fuel investment in our national parks, reduce the maintenance backlog, construct critical infrastructure improvements and support conservation projects that improve our majestic national parks.' The White House said that increasing fees for foreigners visiting the parks will 'ensure fairness.' 'American citizens fund national parks and public lands with their tax dollars, yet they are currently charged the same rate as foreign visitors who do not pay taxes, meaning that American citizens pay more to see their own national treasures than foreign visitors do,' the White House said in the fact sheet. The executive order comes as the administration has proposed a 30 percent cut to National Park Service staffing budgets and service operations. The proposed reductions have troubled some Republicans in Congress. 'We want to have some discussions on it and exactly how it's going to affect the park service and exactly what units the states are going to take over management. … We need more information,' Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) told The Hill in early June.
