Suge Knight Pays $1.5M Settlement In Wrongful Death Lawsuit Related To ‘Straight Outta Compton' Film

Yahoo01-05-2025
Death Row Records co-founder Marion 'Suge' Knight has agreed to pay a $1.5 million settlement to the family of the man whose 2015 death was determined to have been caused by Knight mowing him down in a vehicle.
On Tuesday (April 29), Knight appeared via video at a Los Angeles court hearing concerning a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Terry Carter.
Carter, a 55-year-old businessman, was fatally struck by Knight's pickup truck in the parking lot of Tam's Burgers in Compton on January 29, 2015.
The incident occurred following an altercation linked to the production of the N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, where Knight had a confrontation with Cle 'Bone' Sloan, a consultant on the film.
Carter's widow, Lillian, and daughters, Nekaya and Crystal, were present in the courtroom as their attorney, Lance Behringer, proposed a $1.5 million settlement, allocating $500,000 to each family member.
Knight, whose longtime attorney David Kenner was absent, inquired whether his lack of legal representation would delay the civil trial.
Judge Thomas Long informed him that jury selection was scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 1, and stated, 'There would be no further continuances. This case is out of time.'
Knight ultimately agreed to the settlement, thereby avoiding the trial. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Lillian Carter expressed her dissatisfaction with the outcome, but emphasized her desire to avoid further courtroom proceedings.
She stated, 'I'm not happy with the outcome of it, at all, but I don't want to give him another opportunity to put on a clown show and act like a bi**h,' adding, 'Maybe somebody will shank him in jail.'
In 2018, Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in connection with Carter's death and was sentenced to 28 years in prison.
The plea deal included 22 years for the manslaughter charge and an additional six years due to California's three-strikes law. The fatal confrontation was captured on surveillance video, showing Knight backing his truck into Sloan and then driving forward, fatally striking Carter.
The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Carter's family initially included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Universal Pictures as defendants, alleging that their actions contributed to the dangerous environment leading to Carter's death. However, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube were later cleared of responsibility in the case.

Beyoncé breaks records, fuels economies as fans 'bring it' in Atlanta, other tour stops

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is headed to the final stop on her "Cowboy Carter" tour after leaving her mark on cities along the way. Her most recent stops are prime examples. The megastar will perform her final two shows on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour in Las Vegas. She is poised to take the stage at Allegiant Stadium for two nights on July 25 and 26. But before her Vegas finale, Beyoncé lit up Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta with four shows. More than just unforgettable performances, her ATL shows left an impression on the city and its local economy. Vice President for Communications for Metro Atlanta Chamber Abby Turano says the impact reached beyond the stadium, fueling Atlanta's economy and culture. 'Few events have the kind of impact that Beyoncé's performances brought to Atlanta last week," she said. "Whether you're looking through a creative and cultural lens or an economic one, hosting tens of thousands of fans — many wearing new cowboy hats and boots — and filling Mercedes-Benz Stadium four nights in a row is extraordinary." Emory UniversityGoizueta Business School economics professor Tom Smith added that the impact of Beyoncé's shows is felt by local businesses and venues, particularly because of how fans show up. "I think that most of the impact is really like a grassroots element because I did hear from a lot of folks that when she comes to town and especially with the 'Cowboy Carter' tour is that there is a reason to just bring it," Smith said. "So folks get dressed to the nines, put on my boots and a white hat, go out and buy white boots and a white coat, get their nails and hair done and things of that nature. People say, 'I'm going to make this a full-on event.'" That energy, he says, sets Beyoncé apart from other major tours. And the the local impact sticks around after the shows are over. "If you're running to a hair salon or you're selling boots and Beyoncé comes to town on this tour, it's going to make your month," he said. "It's going to make your year, perhaps." Prior to her Atlanta shows, Beyoncé's two nights in her hometown of Houston on June 28 and 29 generated $50 million in local spending, according to an analysis by Houston First Corporation. The concerts boosted hotel occupancy near NRG Stadium and downtown to nearly 80%, significantly higher than last year's rates in the low 60s. Local restaurants saw a 43% increase in reservations over the same weekend. Another study done by Vivid Seats found the hometown show was the most in-demand venue when looking at average ticket price — $516. The numbers may not be all that surprising. The tour debuted in Los Angeles with a record-breaking $55 million gross — the biggest reported single-venue engagement in Boxscore history by a woman. Overseas in Paris and London, Beyoncé also left her economic footprint. According to LiveNation, her three shows in Paris grossed over $39.7 million in revenue. They became the most profitable concert series in the stadium's history. The Grammy-winning singer first debuted her Cowboy Carter and Rodeo Chitlin' Circurt Tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. The concerts have been revolutionary shows filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. As fans know, Beyoncé first released the 27-track project in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé's first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists alike. According to VividSeats, Beyoncé fans traveled farther than for any of her previous tours averaging 260 miles for the "Cowboy Carter" tour. The same report found fans travelled an average of 257 miles for her Renaissance World Tour. That tour spanned 39 cities across Europe and North America. Meanwhile, the "Cowboy Carter" tour hit nine. Keira Walsh wants more protection for players from online abuse

Keira Walsh has called for more protection against online abuse after her England team-mate Jess Carter was the target of racist vitriol on social media at Euro 2025. Carter announced she would be stepping away from the platforms for the remainder of the tournament ahead of England's dramatic 2-1 semi-final comeback against Italy to set up Sunday's final showdown with Spain. Walsh came off social media after the 2019 World Cup, when reading negative comments contributed to the midfielder genuinely entertaining the thought of quitting football. 'I think it's just a personal preference,' said Walsh, who did return to the networks, but has – bar a single post – been inactive on X since 2020. Lately, her Instagram account has solely been comprised of tagged posts by the Lionesses, or her respective current and former clubs Chelsea and Barcelona. 'I haven't had social media for the best part of four or five months, and I feel a lot better most of the time,' said Walsh. 'I don't really know what's going on outside of camp. I think at the time, with what's going on, probably more people have come off it, but I can only speak for myself. 'I think obviously the girls are smart enough to know what they should and shouldn't be looking at, and I'm sure they'll know what is going to put them in a good headspace and what isn't. 'Do I think there's enough protection on social media? No, I don't, but I'm not going to be able to change that. That's not up to me, but I think just in general, people can be more protected on social media, and I think we can do more to stop that from happening.' England defender Lucy Bronze has warned companies that athletes can 'thrive' without their services, but the reality remains that in the women's game – where new Arsenal recruit Olivia Smith just became the first £1 million player – brand-building on social media can be a lucrative tool for players earning nowhere near their male equivalents. Carter's case has now been referred to UK police, and, in a statement released Sunday, Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham vowed his organisation will 'ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice'. One feature of the Online Safety Act, which received royal assent in October 2023, places a greater onus on social media companies to protect users from illegal content. Companies can be fined up to £18 million, or 10 per cent of their global revenue, if they fail to comply with their duties, but Ofcom – which is implementing the act in a phased approach – has only been able to enforce against the Illegal Harms Codes since March 17, 2025. 'I think we would have liked it to have been stronger in some cases,' said Bullingham. 'There's a real risk that if we're not firm in how the act is implemented, it won't be as strong as we hope. 'I think now it's incumbent on Ofcom to make sure they really do bring those responsible for running social media platforms to account and I haven't seen huge progress in the last couple of years. We would like to see it now.' Foreign social media companies operating within the UK are still beholden to the act, but prosecuting individuals living outside the country responsible for abusive content – which is not uncommon – remains a huge hinderance to justice. Bullingham added: 'If you look at the prosecution, obviously we can only work with the UK police, generally. There are, when we work with some of the companies that support us, there are occasions where you can prosecute outside the UK, but it's really hard and generally really expensive.' The FA chief said his organisation has engaged in productive conversations with FIFA and UEFA, encouraging them to put pressure on social media companies to prevent harmful content from appearing in the first place. He added: 'But where there are occasions, make sure we can prosecute. And we do think that people who perpetrate these hate crimes should be prosecuted wherever they are in the world.'
