Gill and Jadeja broken by England after 203-run stand at Edgbaston

Washington Post3 days ago
BIRMINGHAM, England — India cruised to lunch on 419-6 as Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja collected easy runs against England on the second morning of the second test at Edgbaston on Thursday.
The captain and Jadeja ate up ideal batting conditions — a flat pitch under sunny skies — in a partnership of 203 runs.
Gill moved from 114 overnight to 168, his maiden 150-plus score.
Jadeja advanced from 41 to 89 when he tried to fend off a Josh Tongue short ball that reared up. Jadeja gloved it to the wicketkeeper about 10 minutes before lunch.
That wicket finally exposed India's wobbly tail and bowling allrounder Washington Sundar was with Gill on 1 at lunch.
India scored 109 runs in the session in a slow 25 overs.
Until Tongue's breakthrough, England didn't look like taking a wicket. The only disturbance to the serenity was very early when England complained to the umpires about Jadeja running on the pitch.
Jadeja's reply was to cut and drive England captain Ben Stokes for consecutive boundaries. He reached his 50 in 80 balls, his ninth 50-plus score against England.
Gill flicked, drove, pulled and punched Brydon Carse for fours, and reverse swept spinner Shoaib Bashir for another.
Closer to lunch, both batters hit sixes off Bashir in the same over; Jadeja over long-on to bring up India's 400 total, and Gill a sweep. They were smiling and chuckling in the middle.
But the smiles were gone moments later when Jadeja was out after a 173-ball knock including 10 boundaries and a six.
Gill has 18 boundaries and the six.

Lewis Hamilton gets commentator a part in F1 movie

Racing commentator David Croft has credited racer Lewis Hamilton for getting him a part in the film F1. Speaking ahead of the British Grand Prix in Silverstone the broadcaster explained how Hamilton, who like him is from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, insisted he was part of the film. Filmmakers had wanted to use actors to deliver commentary during racing sequences, but Hamilton had pushed to use Croft and Martin Brundle instead. He said: "It was Lewis Hamilton who came up with the idea and I've said to him he could be my agent anytime he wants." At the premiere in New York in June, Croft introduced himself to Brad Pitt - the film's star - who recognised him and told him the two commentators "legitimise everything we do in this movie". At the London premiere on 23 June Croft said he scored "dad points" by introducing his son to the movie star, who did not believe the two knew one another. He laughed: "I said, 'James, this is Brad. Brad, this is James,' and [Pitt] went: "Ah, Crofty Junior, so good to see you, man." During the New York premiere Croft and Hamilton had a moment to discuss their shared hometown of Stevenage. Despite meeting many times, and the broadcaster commentating on Hamilton's races since he won his first F1 title in 2008, the two had never discussed that they were from the same place. He recalled: "Martin and Lewis and I were having a chat and I went... we are so far from Stevenage now. "He laughed and chuckled, I said 'did you ever think one day we'd be in Time Square having shut New York down to do a film premiere?' He went: 'No, it's just crazy.'" How to watch the British Grand Prix: TV channel and live stream for Silverstone today

The Formula One circus has again descended on Northamptonshire for the British Grand Prix. It is a race which could prove pivotal in the grand scheme of the drivers' championship. Home hero Lando Norris, who now has a stand at Silverstone named after him, came into the weekend sitting second in the standings, 15 points shy of his teammate Oscar Piastri. A win for Norris could see him usurp the Australian and move back onto the top rung, but both were pipped to pole by Max Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton has been off the pace this season as he struggles to get to grips with his new Ferrari, but is allowing himself to dream after an impressive showing in Friday practice. "It was a really good day,' he said. 'Great to see the crowd, amazing to be out on track in a Ferrari here at Silverstone. "The Red Bull and McLaren have an upgrade, so for us to be in the mix still given they have had a step today is really positive. "Definitely feel we can dream of having a strong weekend but putting it all together and extracting it is another thing.' TV channel: The British Grand Prix will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1, with coverage starting from 2pm BST ahead of lights out at 3pm. Coverage will also be available for FREE on Channel 4.
